That night, when Jiang Li returned home, her phone buzzed incessantly with messages from Gu Nanfeng, filled with apologies. As she read the words, a mix of emotions swirled within her, and in the end, she simply replied, "It's okay." When Gu Nanfeng reminded her about her dental appointment next week, she responded with a brief, "Alright."
After a moment of silence in the chat, another message popped up: "There are still some things I haven't said today." Jiang Li stared at the screen, her fingers quickly typing a response: "I know what you want to say; it's all in the past." Deep down, she was aware that she still wanted to see him one last time. At least for now, she didn't want to hear that cruel answer or face the "verdict" of their relationship.
In the following days, it seemed they had reached an unspoken agreement to refrain from contacting each other.
Finally, the day of her dental appointment arrived. Jiang Li deliberately arrived late, strolling into the waiting area at eleven o'clock. There were only two patients ahead of her, which meant Gu Nanfeng wouldn't need to give her any special treatment, and she wouldn't have to wait long.
The treatment room was as clean and tidy as ever. Gu Nanfeng wore a mask like last time, his gaze focused. As Jiang Li settled into the familiar chair, a complex mix of emotions washed over her. She knew this would be the last time she would see him; she wanted to hear him speak but he remained silent, concentrating on the cold instruments in his hands.
The materials for the filling were prepared quickly. Gu Nanfeng gestured for Jiang Li to bite down and test it. She had to admit his skills were exceptional; the empty corner of her tooth was finally filled perfectly. In her heart, she understood that from this moment on, there would be no legitimate reason for her to see him again. The connection that once felt like a sweet bond was about to sever completely.
Gu Nanfeng turned away to wash his hands at the sink. Taking a deep breath, Jiang Li cleared her throat and tried to sound casual as she said, "Well then... perhaps we'll meet again by chance someday, Doctor Gu." When he didn't respond, she hesitated before deciding to clarify: "If you don't need to contact me on WeChat anymore, you can delete my number."
Gu Nanfeng turned off the faucet and remained silent for a long time before finally saying one word: "Okay." Aside from that single word, he seemed genuinely at a loss for what else to say. Five years ago, after retrieving that copy of " The Code of the Classic of Mountains and Seas," he often flipped through its pages but never noticed the love letter tucked inside. It wasn't until much later when he moved that he stumbled upon the now-yellowed note. By then, Jiang Li had already moved to a place he didn't know. He had thought countless times about giving her an answer, but time seemed to have slipped away from them; everything felt like it had missed its perfect moment. He could also guess why Jiang Li had moved; she was so resolute in leaving as if she wanted to erase herself completely from his world.
They fell into a long silence. Seeing that he had no intention of speaking further, Jiang Li turned to leave. She gently pushed open the door to the treatment room and had just reached the threshold when she heard a muffled thud behind her—the sound of a chair falling over. Her heart tightened, but she didn’t look back.
In the hallway, Jiang Li ran into Liu Menglin. Liu Menglin wore a faint smile and said, "Hey there! Did you get your filling done?" Jiang Li nodded slightly. Liu Menglin continued, "I brought lunch for Doctor Gu; do you want to join us?" Jiang Li quickly shook her head; she simply didn’t have the courage to face such a scene again.
Liu Menglin seemed ready to say more, but Jiang Li hurried towards the stairs.
Liu Menglin pushed open the door to the treatment room and saw Gu Nanfeng standing motionless by the sink like a statue. She softly called out to him, but he showed no reaction. As she approached him, she was shocked to see that his eyes were red-rimmed. In all her years at medical school and three years since graduation, she had never seen this side of Gu Nanfeng before. On the table nearby lay a registration slip with Jiang Li's name written on it.
