It stood at the foot of the stairs, its ears drooping lower than ever, as if just out of a bath.
“Hey, this time I can definitely do it!” Jimmy encouraged himself, puffing out his little chest like a tiny general.
It took a few steps back, its short legs bending, and then with a sudden push, it launched itself forward like a rocket ready for takeoff.
“Thud!”
With a dull thump, Jimmy landed face-first into the ground, its nose stinging from the impact.
It lay there motionless, resembling a pitiful little carpet, utterly dejected.
“Why… why can’t I even climb a staircase?” Frustration filled its heart, and its tail drooped limply like a frostbitten eggplant.
A Labrador effortlessly leaped up the stairs and turned back to wag its tail at Jimmy, as if to boast, “Hey, little one, want me to teach you how to climb?”
Jimmy lifted its head and watched the Labrador’s agile figure disappear at the top of the stairs, feeling a pang of envy that was as sour as spilled vinegar.
“I don’t need your help! I can do it myself!” It huffed stubbornly, more as a way to comfort its wounded spirit.
Jimmy tried various methods: clawing at the steps, pushing off with its hind legs, even using its little head to nudge upward like an unyielding little warrior.
But all attempts failed.
It collapsed at the base of the stairs, panting with its tongue out, eyes filled with despair: “Maybe I’m just a useless Short Legs.”
A pair of warm hands gently picked it up, cradling it like a precious treasure.
“Jimmy, why are you back at the stairs again?” Mom’s gentle voice brushed over Jimmy’s heart like a spring breeze as she softly patted its little head. “Don’t be discouraged, little one. One day you’ll make it up there.”
Jimmy blinked its big, wet eyes that sparkled like two shining stars. “Really?”
Mom nodded and set it back down on the floor. “Of course! You just need to find the method that works for you.”
What method suits me?
Jimmy looked at his Short Legs and then glanced at the tall steps, a glimmer of hope rising in his heart, like a tiny seed breaking through the soil.
He began to observe other dogs going up and down the stairs: the Labrador moved steadily and quickly, like an experienced mountaineer; the Siamese Cat jumped with precision, like a light-footed dancer.
"I can't learn from cats," Jimmy shook his head, his little head bobbing like a rattle drum, "but maybe I can try adjusting my pace?"
He attempted to place both front paws on the first step at the same time, then pushed off with his hind legs, like a determined Little Warrior climbing upward.
"Thud!"
He fell over onto his back, like a turtle turned upside down.
But he didn't lose heart; he immediately got back up and continued trying, like an unyielding Little Warrior.
Once, twice, three times...
Finally, on his seventeenth attempt.
"Clap!"
Jimmy successfully stood on the second step!
He spun around in excitement, his little tail wagging furiously like a joyful whip: "I did it! I really did it!"
He continued to work hard, climbing step by step, like a conqueror scaling a peak.
When he finally stood at the corner of the stairs, a sense of achievement surged within him, like a firework bursting into bloom!
He inadvertently caught sight of himself in the mirror around the corner.
The little dog in the mirror was covered in dust, his Short Legs trembling slightly, but his eyes sparkled with excitement, like two shining diamonds.
But... wait!
Jimmy leaned closer to the mirror and stared intently, suddenly frozen in place as if under a spell. "Is this... really me?"
The reflection in the mirror was a fluffy, snow-white, adorable Maltese.
"So... I’m not a Corgi at all!" Jimmy exclaimed, both shocked and thrilled, as if he had discovered a new world. "My legs aren’t short at all! I’m a Maltese!"
All feelings of inferiority and frustration melted away like snow under the sun.
Jimmy dashed into the living room, barking excitedly at his mom, who was sipping coffee, while pointing at the stairs with his paw like a little hero seeking praise.
His mom set down her cup and laughed at the little guy spinning around in excitement. "Oh, our little hero has finally conquered the stairs! Well done!"
She picked Jimmy up and planted a kiss on his little head. "No matter what breed you are, you will always be our cutest treasure."
Hearing those words made Jimmy feel like his world had brightened, as if bathed in golden sunlight.
He licked his mom's face with his tiny tongue, expressing his overflowing love, then snuggled into her arms and closed his eyes contentedly.
Sunlight poured into the room, casting warm shadows, while the little dog who once worried about his "short legs" now basked in happiness and satisfaction, like a sweet candy.
