Lu Tianyang adjusted his clothes and glanced at Ye Qi. Her outfit was pulled down too low, and he felt a wave of disgust. Compared to Ye Ya, he couldn't help but shake his head; there was simply no comparison.
Ye Qi looked at Lu Tianyang, who remained unmoved, feeling a bit frustrated. Did she really have no appeal at all?
“Tian Yang, don’t you know how I feel? From the first time I saw you, I liked you,” Ye Qi bit her lip and finally spoke up. She couldn't bear the thought of letting such a quality man slip away. As a girl, she knew she shouldn't be the one to say this, but seeing Lu Tianyang's indifferent expression was unbearable.
“Sorry, I'm not interested in you,” Lu Tianyang replied bluntly, showing no pity. He had no attraction to women like her.
“You... why?” Ye Qi was infuriated. This was her first time confessing to someone, and she received such a heartless rejection.
Lu Tianyang raised an eyebrow. “To be honest, the person I want to marry is your sister Ye Ya. She is the only one qualified to be my wife. You should just give up. The reason I'm here tonight is also for Ye Ya.”
“What? You... you like Ye Ya?” Ye Qi was stunned. If Lu Tianyang had said he wanted to marry another noble lady, she could have accepted it, but he actually said he wanted to marry Ye Ya—the very same Ye Ya who had been humiliated by the Jing Family and rejected in marriage. How could she swallow that?
“Please watch your words; Ye Ya is not a loose woman. From now on, show some respect. I am your brother-in-law—though that depends on whether Ye Ya wants to acknowledge you as her sister,” Lu Tianyang said before turning to leave, wanting to avoid any misunderstandings.
As he walked downstairs, he took out his phone. If Ye Ya wasn’t planning to come, then there was no reason for him to stay any longer.
Ye Ya was upstairs, sitting in the room feeling out of place as if she were an intruder in someone else's home. She wanted to leave immediately and never see these people again.
Living alone was so much better—raising her daughter peacefully and living quietly would be ideal. Why did she have to get involved in this mess? Did she think her life was too calm? Had she forgotten the lessons of the past?
Ye Ya couldn’t help but smile bitterly; here, she always felt like a clown.
Her phone rang, and when she pulled it out of her bag, she saw it was Lu Tianyang calling. At that moment, she couldn’t believe he still had the nerve to call her; he truly considered everything inside and out—she admired him for that. But did they even have anything left to talk about?
Ye Ya hung up on him without hesitation; at that moment, even hearing his voice made her feel sick.
It was truly disgusting. While he was being all sweet with Ye Qi, did he really think he could call her and discuss which sister from the Ye Family was better or had more advantages? She didn’t need such details from Lu Tianyang.
Seeing that Ye Ya had hung up on him, Lu Tianyang returned to the banquet hall and searched around thoroughly but found no sign of her. He thought that perhaps Ye Ya hadn’t come after all, so he decided to leave. This kind of gathering was far too boring; it would be better to go back and argue with that woman a bit, just to tease her and see her angry expression.
Ye Ya checked the time several times; it was already ten o'clock. The guests should be leaving by now. She wondered if Chen Chen was behaving at home or if she had been crying or refusing formula when hungry. She felt anxious about it all.
She truly disliked this place, the Ye Family, which had never belonged to her as an illegitimate daughter.
Her wishes had never been grand; she only wanted to live quietly and freely. She did not yearn to soar like an eagle under the blue sky, but simply hoped to flutter like a swallow among the fields, in the trees, or beneath the eaves, finding a stable place to rest and fly freely.
However, such desires were shattered by the appearance of Lu Tianyang. She didn’t even ask for much; she just wanted a peaceful life with her daughter. It seemed that even this small request was too much to ask. Lu Tianyang would not let her go easily unless she was willing to abandon her child. But Chen Chen was her lifeline; if he took Chen Chen away from her, would she be left without any support to live?
Lu Tianyang, did he really intend to drive her to despair? Did he truly want her to flee with her child? The business at Moya Fashion Store had finally stabilized, everything seemed to be settling down—was he really going to force her into a corner?
Ye Ya's thoughts were in disarray; she didn’t even hear the knock on the door. When Ye Tao walked in, he found Ye Ya sitting on the bed in a daze, looking like a wounded animal—lost and bewildered.
“Xiao Ya, sorry to keep you waiting,” Ye Tao's voice pulled Ye Ya back from her reverie. She was momentarily stunned and jumped up from the bed as if caught by a teacher for doing something wrong. “Dad.”
Seeing her so anxious, Ye Tao wanted to pat her shoulder, but Ye Ya instinctively took a step back. His hand hovered in mid-air, caught between advancing and retreating, leaving him feeling helpless.
Ye Ya realized that she had overreacted. Taking a deep breath, she tried to calm herself down. She picked up the gift beside her and walked over. “Dad, this is a gift for Grandpa. Please pass it on for me and wish him a happy birthday, okay?”
She wanted to leave; she wanted to escape this place. “Xiao Ya, this is your heartfelt gesture. You should give it to Grandpa yourself; he will be very happy,” Ye Tao attempted to ease the atmosphere between them. It felt nothing like a father-daughter relationship; it was more like two polite strangers or perhaps a student and teacher.
Ye Ya held onto the gift, unsure of where to place it. In the end, she could only keep holding it herself. She looked up at the man before her—this man known as her father—and couldn’t help but think that even if Chen Chen followed her alone without a father, she believed she could still make Chen Chen happy. Life could go on without a father.
She was like a wild grass—resilient and tenacious—able to thrive no matter where she was thrown. And her child, born after ten months of pregnancy, would surely be just as strong. They could grow resiliently like wild grass, unafraid of storms; they would live freely and fiercely.
“Xiao Ya, are you alright?” Ye Tao’s gaze was filled with too many emotions for him to decipher what Ye Ya was thinking at that moment. He could never have imagined that at this moment, Ye Ya was contemplating life with Chen Chen—believing they could survive without Lu Tianyang.
Without Lu Tianyang, Chen Chen could still live; everything wouldn’t be so terrible.
“Dad, I’m fine. It’s getting late; I want to go home now. Is that okay?”
Hearing her words pierced Ye Tao’s heart: “Xiao Ya, this is also your home.”
Ye Tao wanted to have a good talk with her. He knew that during his absence, many things had happened in this child’s life. Yet she never complained; even when something significant occurred, she said nothing at all. This trait reminded him too much of her mother—bearing everything alone without sharing any burden with others.
The door was kicked open with a bang, and Ye Qi stormed in, her eyes narrowing at Ye Ya as if she were looking at an enemy. "Ye Ya, you shameless woman! Why are you always trying to make my life difficult?"
Ye Ya was bewildered by the sudden confrontation. In this family, she always felt like she was in the wrong; her very existence seemed to be a mistake in the eyes of the Ye Family.
Not wanting to engage in an argument, Ye Ya planned to simply deliver her gift to Grandpa and leave. However, Ye Qi had no intention of letting her off that easily. Tonight, for the first time, Ye Qi had boldly confessed her feelings to a man, only to be ruthlessly rejected. The humiliation she felt was all because of Ye Ya.
Because of her, Ye Qi was constantly overshadowed in this household. Now that she had finally set her sights on a man, it was all ruined because of Ye Ya.
"Qi Qi, what's wrong? Let's talk this out calmly," Ye Tao said, feeling a headache coming on as he watched his two daughters clash. They had always been like oil and water, bickering since childhood.
"Ye Qi, I don't want to argue with you. I'm here for Grandpa's birthday," Ye Ya insisted, increasingly feeling that she couldn't stay here any longer; it was suffocating.
"You shameless hussy! Grandpa has publicly severed ties with you. What right do you have to celebrate his birthday?" Ye Qi sneered.
Indeed, Grandpa had announced that she was no longer part of the Ye Family. Why was she even here today? Was it because she still clung to familial ties? Her presence here was always a mistake; she shouldn't have come back at all.
"Qi Qi, how can you say that? Your sister is here because I asked her to return. Show some respect," Ye Tao interjected as he grew increasingly uncomfortable with Ye Qi's harsh words.
Zhao Meiqin had just seen off some guests when she heard the commotion upstairs. It sounded like her precious daughter was quite agitated, so she hurried up to check. To her surprise, she found Ye Ya there.
"When did you come back? You still have the face to return? You've already brought shame upon the Ye Family, just like your shameless mother who seduces men everywhere."
Ye Ya truly didn't want to listen to another round of insults from them. Gripping her gift tightly, she turned and headed downstairs.
Ye Zhen's birthday banquet was going smoothly; he sat in the living room resting, feeling his age catching up with him unlike in his youth.
But Zhao Meiqin and Ye Qi were not about to let it go; they immediately followed after her.
"Ye Ya! You need to explain yourself right now! When did you start seeing Lu Tianyang? I met him first! Why do you have to steal the man I like?" Ye Qi shouted as she descended the stairs in her high heels.
Hearing this, Ye Zhen furrowed his brows. "Qi Qi, what's going on? Why are you two fighting on such a good day?" Today was his birthday, and he didn't want it marred by arguments.
“Grandpa, do you know that wretched person Ye Ya? She just came back and is already trying to seduce Lu Tianyang. Isn’t she shameless?”
Ye Ya took a deep breath. She didn’t want to argue, especially not on her grandfather’s birthday. Holding a gift, she walked over and said, “Grandpa, today is your birthday. I wish you a long life and happiness as vast as the Eastern Sea. This is my small token of appreciation.”
Just as she finished speaking, Ye Qi slapped the gift out of her hands, sending it crashing to the floor. It was an expensive set of calligraphy supplies; Ye Ya knew that Ye Zhen loved calligraphy and often practiced writing.
“Why would you even give such a worthless thing, Ye Ya? Why have you always tried to compete with me since we were kids? Even for men! Do you think someone like Lu Tianyang is someone a cheap person like you could ever deserve? Just like your shameless mother, you’ll never be worthy of stepping into the Ye Family’s door.”
After Ye Qi finished speaking, Ye Ya, who had held back her anger all night, finally snapped. She slapped Ye Qi back. Trained in martial arts, her strike left half of Ye Qi’s face red. Ye Qi staggered back a few steps, nearly falling to the ground.
At this moment, Zhao Meiqin erupted like an angry lion. Her precious daughter had been struck like this—was there any justice in the world?
She wanted to teach this shameless girl a lesson, but she was no match for Ye Ya. Though Ye Ya didn’t want to fight back, it didn’t mean others would let her be.
“You shameless wretch! How dare you hit my daughter? I’ll make sure you pay for this!” Zhao Meiqin was intent on inflicting serious harm, but each time she swung at Ye Ya, she missed as Ye Ya skillfully dodged her attacks. The living room descended into chaos.
Suddenly, Ye Ya felt a sharp pain in her body and became dizzy. She didn’t know when Ye Zhen had picked up a cane and struck her with it. Then came a slap from Ye Zhen that sent Ye Ya reeling against a large blue-and-white porcelain vase.
At that moment, Zhao Meiqin and Ye Qi seemed to have found their opportunity for revenge. Zhao Meiqin grabbed Ye Ya by the hair while Ye Qi, clutching her swollen face, kicked at her.
