As the car pulled back into Yiju Mountain Villa, it was already past ten o'clock. By this time, Chen Chen had long been lulled to sleep. Lu Tianyang glanced over and lowered his voice, "Dear, I told you our daughter would be well-behaved at home. She must be hoping that both her parents are by her side."
Hearing his words, Ye Ya quietly stepped out of the nursery. Before she turned five, she had only her mother by her side. In truth, she didn't feel too sad about not having a father. However, after her mother left and she was taken back to the Ye Family, she realized that a father could also care deeply for his daughter, just like Ye Qi did.
Ye Qi always felt that she overshadowed her, but little did she know that it was only through her own efforts that she could carve out a small space for herself. In fact, her wishes had never been grand.
She wanted a real home of her own, a place that could shield her from the wind and rain. Now that she had a daughter, she could only work twice as hard.
Relying on others meant you could never know how long you could depend on them, but relying on yourself was different; at least you could determine your own fate.
Lu Tianyang noticed her sitting alone on the sofa in a daze and walked over to bring her a cup of tea. "What are you thinking about?"
Ye Ya looked at him and said, "Lu Tianyang, thank you for helping me with the factory contract." She wasn't being arrogant; she knew that even without his help, she would have worked hard to secure that contract. After all, given their current situation, they needed their own factory to ensure sales.
"Thank you for what? I didn’t help you with anything," Lu Tianyang replied, disliking her polite demeanor.
"I know it was you, but still, thank you for your assistance. It's late; why don't you stay here? I can sleep in the guest room," she said genuinely. She was truly scared; she lacked the confidence to start over again. Everyone feared getting hurt, and she was no exception.
Although this house was now under her name, it ultimately belonged to Lu Tianyang. She thought that once the company was up and running and making profits, she would sell the house she had previously supported and buy a bigger one. That way, both she and Chen Chen wouldn't have to keep moving around; they could finally settle down.
Lu Tianyang grabbed her hand firmly. "You were fine just a moment ago; what's wrong now?"
"Lu Tianyang, please don’t do this; I’m scared," Ye Ya said as she pulled away from him. No matter how strong she appeared, in matters of the heart, she was still just a woman with feelings made of flesh and blood. After so many years of living cautiously in high society—afraid that one misstep would lead to being cast out—she didn’t want to live like that anymore or endure the mockery from the Lu Family.
Even if they were together again, the Lu Family's attitude toward her wouldn’t change.
"What are you afraid of? Are you not scared when you're with Xiao Lin?" Lu Tianyang genuinely didn't know what else to do.
Ye Ya nodded slightly in response. "Being with him indeed doesn’t require much thought." There was less concern because there wasn't much at stake; they had never considered being together seriously, so there were fewer worries involved.
Lu Tianyang didn't just let her go; instead, he held her tighter. "I don't care. You are not allowed to be with him. I won't allow it."
Ye Ya remained still, her voice muffled. "Lu Tianyang, I don't want to be with him. I don't want to be with anyone anymore. I just want to be with our daughter and live a quiet life. Really, my wish is that simple—to live peacefully."
"How can you be so selfish? You're with Chen Chen now; you don't want me. What am I supposed to do?" Lu Tianyang listened to her words, realizing that in her envisioned future, there was no place for him—thankfully, there was no place for Xiao Lin either.
"Lu Tianyang, without me, you can still have many daughters. They can give you children too. But I only have Chen Chen; she is the only one for me and will never leave my side."
Forgive her for lacking security; in this world, she only believed in the daughter she carried for ten months—blood-related and forever unbreakable.
"I don't want anyone else; I only want you, Ye Ya. Believe me, I won't leave you. Absolutely not, not until the very end." After all those days, she had melted into his life. Without her, his life would be like a faded landscape painting—meaningless.
"Please stop saying that, Lu Tianyang. Don't make any more promises, okay?" Ye Ya had lost the courage to believe again.
"Alright, I won't. But please don't be afraid; try to trust me, alright?" Lu Tianyang released her and held her shoulders gently. It was his fault for not giving her enough security, which made her feel this way.
Ye Ya said nothing but looked at him. Lu Tianyang sighed and ruffled her hair. "Be good; wash up and go to sleep. You sleep here; I'll go to the guest room."
After taking a few steps, Lu Tianyang turned back and picked her up again, carrying her toward the sofa. "You're lying again; didn't you say you were going out?"
"I just want to check your foot. If it's fine, I'll go out." Lu Tianyang placed her on the sofa and checked her foot, finally feeling relieved. "Wife, it's much better now. So I'm at ease; hurry up and wash up and get some sleep."
This time he really didn't linger. Ye Ya didn't want to struggle anymore; she grabbed her pajamas and went into the bathroom. After washing up, she immediately went to bed.
In the middle of the night, dark clouds gathered in the sky, completely covering the moon. The weather forecast warned of heavy rain in the coming days.
Ye Ya felt anxious as the dark night pressed against the windows with a frightening sound. She couldn't help but think of the movie she had watched earlier that evening. Remembering Chen Chen made her get up despite her fears; she worried whether the little one would be scared at night.
When she reached Chen Chen's room and checked on her, she found that the little one was sleeping soundly, which eased her worries.
The rain began to pour heavily, and sometimes having a large room could be quite frustrating. Ye Ya stepped out of Chen Chen's room and turned around to see a figure, startling her. In a moment of panic, she covered her mouth, fearing she might scream and wake her daughter.
Lu Tianyang was also worried, so he got up to check. However, before he could reach the door, he saw the woman’s face pale with fright.
“Wife, what’s wrong? It’s me,” Lu Tianyang said as he grabbed her, but she continued to struggle.
Turning on the light and seeing who it was, Ye Ya kicked him lightly. “Why are you walking around silently at night? You nearly scared me to death.” She huffed angrily and returned to her room, still shaken by the heavy rain outside.
Lu Tianyang walked in and noticed her face was a bit pale. Concerned, he asked, “Wife, why were you so scared just now? I was worried about you all, so I got up to check.”
“It’s all your fault for insisting on taking me to see that kind of movie. What were you thinking, you jerk?” Ye Ya rubbed her head; the darkness outside only added to her growing anxiety.
Upon hearing this, Lu Tianyang realized what had happened. He felt a pang of guilt. “I’m sorry, wife. I just heard them say that watching that kind of movie in the theater is a must-see. When we get back, I’ll make sure to deal with them.”
He sat down beside her and noticed her palms were cold. “Wife, I’m sorry. Are you feeling warmer now?”
“You did this on purpose! You wanted me to be scared. Just go back to sleep; you have work tomorrow,” Ye Ya thought to herself. Despite telling herself not to be afraid at her age, she couldn’t help but glance around the room.
“No, I need to watch you fall asleep before I can relax. Next time, I won’t let you watch that kind of movie again.” He realized that scaring her like this was not the way to go about things; it had left her with a psychological shadow.
Ye Ya yawned and was directly pulled into bed by Lu Tianyang. Watching him sit properly on the edge of the bed made her feel sleepy too. Perhaps it was because he was there; she quickly fell asleep.
The next morning, Ye Ya found Lu Tianyang sprawled on her bed. She truly didn’t know how to describe her feelings at that moment.
“Lu Tianyang, why didn’t you go back to your room?” Ye Ya asked with a mix of amusement and exasperation.
“I was afraid you’d have nightmares, so I stayed by your side. Thankfully, you fell asleep,” he replied while rubbing his slightly numb arm and legs. Suddenly losing his balance, he tumbled back onto the bed.
This was not the key issue; the crucial hand was resting right in front of Ye Ya.
Ye Ya wanted to call him foolish, but it turned out that this man was truly incorrigible.
Lu Tianyang quickly got up, "Wife, I'm sorry, my leg is a bit numb. I definitely didn't mean to touch you." He swore that this time it was genuinely unintentional; he had inadvertently taken advantage of the situation. She wasn't wearing a bra, and her skin felt so soft.
"Don't sleep like that again. What if you scare me to death in the morning?" Ye Ya scoffed at him, not believing for a second that he could make her feel heartbroken with such antics.
Lu Tianyang got out of bed and realized his calf was cramping. It was surprising that such a thing could happen to him.
Ye Ya noticed his strange expression and turned over, "Lu Tianyang, what's wrong with you?"
"Wife, it's nothing. Just a calf cramp; it'll be fine soon."
Ye Ya lifted his leg onto the bed and took a look; indeed, it was cramping. "Let me massage it for you. It must be because of the awkward sleeping position last night. Lu Tianyang, you can't do this again next time."
"Okay," Lu Tianyang replied readily while furrowing his brows. He suddenly wondered if he fell ill, would she care for him like this?
Changing his strategy, Lu Tianyang still took her to work in the morning.
In the afternoon, Amy mentioned that a Miss Long wanted to see her regarding an urgent matter. Ye Ya recalled not knowing anyone with the surname Long but still allowed her in.
Long Shaoxue stood at the door, took a deep breath, and then knocked lightly.
"Come in."
Ye Ya looked at the girl who walked in, her innocent and charming appearance confirming that she did not recognize her.
“May I ask what you need? I don’t recognize you,” Ye Ya said, not wanting to waste time, as there were many matters to attend to.
“Mrs. Lu, I am Long Shaotang’s sister, Long Shaoxue. I’m here to apologize on behalf of my brother, and I sincerely hope you can accept my apology.” With that, Long Shaoxue performed a deep bow, her demeanor earnest.
Ye Ya was surprised that such a decent sister could belong to that scoundrel, Long Shaotang.
“Mrs. Lu, I’m truly sorry for my brother’s disrespectful behavior. He has realized his mistake. Could you please forgive him and our family? If you are still very upset, I am willing to accept punishment on his behalf.”
Ye Ya rubbed her temples. Long Shaotang must have accumulated some good karma in his past life to have such a sincere sister. In truth, she didn’t really want to retaliate; that scoundrel had not caused her any substantial harm in the end.
Seeing Ye Ya silent, Long Shaoxue assumed she was still angry. “Mrs. Lu, if there’s anything you need help with, I can assist. I also contributed during the factory incident; Zuo Kai said you are the easiest person to talk to.”
“Oh, Zuo Kai,” Ye Ya said as she sized up Long Shaoxue.
Mentioning Zuo Kai made Long Shaoxue’s face flush slightly.
