In such a situation, the last time the Qi Family deliberately stood someone up, it had already upset the Tao Family greatly. Now, they were late again—whether it was due to traffic or intentional, only they knew. Tao Mother looked at her precious daughter and felt relieved that Qi Fan's feelings for Mo Mo were genuine.
After more than ten minutes, the Qi Family finally arrived. Qi Fei pulled at her mother’s sleeve. “Mom, didn’t you promise to have a good talk first? Don’t let my brother lose face!”
“Dad and Mom, you’re finally here! Everyone is here now; let’s order some food,” Qi Fan said as he pulled out a chair for Qi Mother.
“Let them order first. Let’s see what they like; the Qi Family won’t treat guests poorly,” Qi Mother said. Upon seeing them, she couldn’t help but feel disdain. A mere cook and a teacher—how good could their daughter be? If her son really married her, she wouldn’t even know how to introduce this daughter-in-law in the future.
Tao Father observed that they seemed to have no sincerity at all, completely unlike people coming to discuss their children’s marriage. “Mrs. Qi, we are here today to discuss the marriage between my daughter Mo Mo and Qi Fan. I wonder what your stance is on this?”
Qi Mother put down the menu and frowned in dissatisfaction with the dishes available. “Do you think we would agree to Qi Fan marrying someone like your daughter? I don’t even know if she’s been taught properly or if she’s just clinging to my son after feeding him some soup.”
Hearing Qi Mother’s words, Tao Momo clenched her hands tightly together. Tao Mother could no longer remain calm; it was Qi Fan who spoke up first. “Mom, Mo Mo and I truly love each other. I want to marry her. Please don’t say that.”
“Exactly, Mom! I think Sister Mo Mo is quite outstanding too! I heard she even runs her own company and is a designer,” Qi Fei chimed in, worried that the atmosphere was turning sour.
“Running a company?” Qi Mother chuckled dismissively, clearly unimpressed.
“Are you saying our Mo Mo isn’t worthy of your son? Let me tell you, in the Tao Family, Mo Mo is our only treasure; it’s not like we’re desperately trying to cling to your family,” Tao Mother retorted angrily. She couldn’t allow her daughter to suffer such indignities before even getting married.
“Mom, please don’t be angry,” Tao Momo said as she held her mother’s hand.
“Well then, you can advise your precious daughter not to cling to my son anymore; our family can’t afford your treasure.”
As a teacher, Tao Mother knew well what kind of character her daughter had. She stood up abruptly. “Mo Mo, let’s go! You’re my only daughter; I’ve never scolded you even once while raising you. I didn’t raise you just to suffer like this.”
“Your mom is right, Mo Mo. Let’s go; there are plenty of good men in this world besides Qi Fan.” Tao Father took his wife and daughter by the hand and left the private room without looking back.
Qi Fan wanted to chase after them, but Qi Mu stopped him. "What are you going to do? Just go out there and see their attitude?"
Qi Fan slammed his fist on the table, holding back his anger. "Mom, why do you have to do this?"
"Son, just let it go. They don't care about you. I'll introduce you to someone better."
"Mom, I won't marry anyone but Mo Mo." After saying that, Qi Fan felt he couldn't stay there any longer. He rushed outside; after today, the Tao family must have a terrible impression of him.
Tao Ba had already hailed a taxi. Seeing Qi Fan come out, he waved his hand. "Qi Fan, just forget it. We can't afford your luxury cars."
"Qi Fan, our Mo Mo is with you not to suffer. If your mom continues with this attitude, don't come looking for Mo Mo anymore. I won't agree to it." With that, Tao Ma pulled Tao Momo into the car.
Tao Momo glanced at Qi Fan, her worst fears coming true. She couldn't let her parents worry any longer. Shaking her head, she followed her parents into the car.
Her parents often said she had never faced such grievances in her life. But in truth, they hadn't either. Her mother was a teacher, and her father ran a food stall; their family had always been happy together. How could they have ever endured such humiliation?
Back home, Tao Ba realized they hadn't had dinner yet and worried that his precious daughter might be upset. "Mo Mo, don't be sad. Dad will make your favorite food."
"Dad, let me help you," Tao Momo said, looking at her loving parents. No matter how big the problem was, with her parents around, she felt she could get through anything.
"Good girl! Then you can help Dad wash the vegetables."
"Let's have a nice family dinner tonight! I'll go get some wine. Honey, you can have a little tonight." Tao Ma agreed, thinking they couldn't let their daughter feel wronged; she needed to know how much they loved her.
Tao Ba cooked a feast at home. After they finished eating, Tao Momo returned to her room with a full stomach and picked up her phone to see several missed calls from Qi Fan. Just then, her phone rang again. She pressed the button and answered, "Hello?"
"Mo Mo, I'm sorry," Qi Fan said anxiously, fearing she might really ignore him now.
“Qi Fan, let’s calm down for a moment.” Tao Momo sat down and rubbed her stomach. “I ate too much; I need to rest a bit.”
“Mo Mo, as long as you’re okay, I’m relieved. Just take a good rest, and I’ll come pick you up tomorrow.” Qi Fan sighed in relief; the fact that she could still eat meant things weren’t too bad.
“No need. My parents probably don’t want to see you right now. I’m going to sleep.” Tao Momo hung up the phone, letting out a soft sigh.
She remembered seeing a quote a few days ago: growing up means that in the past, when feeling sad, one would lose their appetite and be indifferent to everything; now, they can cry while heading to the kitchen to make themselves a bowl of pork rib noodles, not forgetting to add two fried eggs.
If there’s one thing Tao Momo felt she couldn’t do, it was not eating when she was sad. Otherwise, it would only make her parents worry more, wouldn’t it?
Winter was approaching, and the moon hung coldly in the sky. It felt like she and Qi Fan were two stars—seemingly close yet actually far apart.
She knew he loved her; she wouldn’t deny that. However, there was a palpable distance between them.
At Yiju Mountain Villa, Lu Tianyang was in his room glaring at his workaholic wife with frustration. Finally unable to hold back any longer, he said, “Ye Ya, enough is enough. You said it would take ten minutes; it’s been half an hour now.”
Ye Ya had finished her work, clicked save, and closed her laptop. “If you’re not satisfied, you can leave. I didn’t ask you to wait.”
Hearing this made Lu Tianyang furious. He walked over and wrapped his arms around her waist. “Wife, I’ll give you one more chance to say that again, okay?” Looking into Lu Tianyang's eyes filled with shameless threat, Ye Ya pinched his arm. “You just bully me! Lu Tianyang, do you have any other tricks besides this?”
Lu Tianyang glanced at his arm. “Wife, don’t you always pinch me when you can’t win an argument? Look at this; it’s almost bruised.”
After saying that, Lu Tianyang pulled her closer. “Wife, when are we going to remarry?”
Ye Ya pushed his hand away and dragged him outside. “Lu Tianyang, keep dreaming.” She didn’t want to marry him; wasn’t this just fine?
“What do you mean you don’t want to marry me?” Lu Tianyang was taken aback. Wasn’t everything fine this morning? How could things change so quickly after a nap? Were women really this fickle?
“Close your eyes first,” Ye Ya said as she looked at him.
Lu Tianyang paused for a moment. “Wife, what’s wrong?”
"Close your eyes," Ye Ya said, pinching him again. Lu Tianyang had no choice but to obey and shut his eyes.
"Wife, what are you going to do?"
"Just follow me," Ye Ya replied, pulling him toward the door. She locked it with a decisive click. "Lu Tianyang, go back to your room and don't disturb me."
Hearing the door slam shut, Lu Tianyang couldn't help but think that this woman was getting bold, tricking him into coming out like this.
"Wife, be good and open the door," he knocked lightly.
"Stop knocking! I want to sleep," Ye Ya called back, ignoring him as she walked into the bathroom to brush her teeth and get ready for bed.
With silence settling in, Lu Tianyang thought that if he didn't teach her a lesson today, she would really think she could get away with anything.
After a moment of consideration, he returned to his room, planning to climb over from the balcony. The two rooms were connected, and it wouldn't be difficult to cross over the air conditioning railing outside.
Ye Ya emerged from the bathroom and noticed some movement outside. Curiosity got the better of her, and she stepped onto the balcony for a look. She was startled to see Lu Tianyang there. "What are you doing, you idiot?" Although they were on the second floor, falling could lead to serious injuries.
"Wife, move aside," Lu Tianyang said as he took a few more steps closer.
Ye Ya's heart raced as she stood aside without saying another word, afraid that he might lose focus. She watched as he deftly climbed over the balcony.
As soon as he landed inside, Ye Ya's fists were raised in front of his chest. "Lu Tianyang, you idiot! Who told you to climb over? What if you fall?"
"It's fine, wife. It's just the second floor. Even if I fell, I'd be okay. I'm not that weak," Lu Tianyang replied dismissively.
Ye Ya's anger flared even more. "You idiot! What if you break your arms or legs? What about Chen Chen? You're so selfish! You're not human; you're just an idiot!"
Realizing that her anger stemmed from concern for his safety, Lu Tianyang pulled her into a tight embrace. "It's okay, wife. Look at me; I'm perfectly fine."
Her hand was tightly grasped by him, rendering her unable to move, and her feet began to kick at him. She thought about what would happen if he really fell and became disabled—what would she and their daughter do then?
“Wife, please calm down. Look at me, I’m really fine. You can touch me; everything is okay,” Lu Tianyang said, looking at her anxious expression with a mix of happiness and guilt.
“Lu Tianyang, you big idiot! I don’t want to deal with you anymore. Even if you fall to your death, it has nothing to do with me,” Ye Ya said, her heart racing with fear and anger. How could someone be so reckless?
Just as she turned away, Lu Tianyang hugged her tightly. “Wife, I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have made you worry, but I wanted to come in and see you. You locked the door and wouldn’t let me in. Maybe we should put another door in the study? That way, if you’re angry and don’t want to let me in, I can just come through the other door. How does that sound?”
What a ridiculous idea for him to come up with.
“Lu Tianyang, if you ever do something so dangerous again, just stay far away from me. Don’t let me see you!” Ye Ya exclaimed. Seeing him standing there in such a precarious position had nearly scared her to death.
“Okay, don’t worry. How could I bear to die when I still have to take care of you two?”
As soon as he finished speaking, Ye Ya shouted at him again, “Lu Tianyang, try saying something unlucky one more time!”
