When Jin Chengyan arrived at the Jin Mansion, the exterior appeared tranquil.
His thoughts drifted back six years to when Jin Zhongshu had barged into Ruan Shengyu's apartment, throwing a million-dollar check in front of her and threatening her to stay away from Jin Chengyan.
Later, when Jin Chengyan heard A Shan recount that scene, his heart twisted with discomfort. Ruan Shengyu must have been terrified at that moment.
For these past years, he had been trying to make amends with Ruan Shengyu.
However, this time, when Jin Zhongshu intended to use similar tactics against Qiao Nuo, he felt compelled to intervene. Qiao Nuo had no reason to endure such treatment.
But when he opened the door and stepped inside, he found Qiao Nuo sprawled on the sofa, sound asleep.
Her face bore a slight flush, likely from the living room's air conditioning being set too high. She was wrapped in a wool blanket, which added to her warmth.
In that instant, Jin Chengyan felt a wave of relief wash over him; thankfully, Qiao Nuo was alright.
He quietly approached and sat beside her, gently pulling down the blanket a bit to prevent her from overheating.
Qiao Nuo was particularly serene in her slumber, yet her brows were slightly furrowed. It seemed the events of the past few days had worn her out—her father's passing and the heavy burden of the Qiao family resting solely on her shoulders.
Suddenly, Jin Chengyan realized just how deeply he cared for Qiao Nuo. It was a silent concern that he almost hadn’t noticed himself.
His hand resting on Qiao Nuo stiffened as he realized he had inadvertently touched her.
On the sofa, she was not in a deep sleep, and Jin Chengyan's movements had already stirred her awake. She opened her hazy eyes and looked at Jin Chengyan sitting beside her.
Perhaps it was the drowsiness that made her feel that Jin Chengyan radiated a warm and familiar aura. She smiled slightly, and the fatigue of the past few days seemed to vanish.
"Qiao..."
"Jin Chengyan, do you know? Back then, Dad was very busy and didn’t have time to have dinner with us. I was just waiting on the sofa for him to come back; he sat by the sofa watching me..." The scene felt so familiar that Qiao Nuo found herself confiding in Jin Chengyan.
She wanted to tell him how much she missed her father.
Jin Chengyan paused, his hand, which was about to pull away from Qiao Nuo, returned to rest on her shoulder.
"Mom left us early, so it was just me, Dad, and Qiao Chen at home. He was both a father and a mother to us. He always joked that when he finally found Mom, he would complain to her about why she left so early, leaving him with two little ones. He loved Mom so much that he couldn’t help but feel abandoned by her, right?" Qiao Nuo curled up closer to Jin Chengyan, as if his presence was warmer than the air conditioning.
Touched by her words, Jin Chengyan understood all too well what it felt like to wait for someone. He admitted that his heart ached for Qiao Nuo.
With a gentle effort, he lifted Qiao Nuo into his arms, enveloping her in a tenderness he had never realized he possessed.
His breath brushed lightly against Qiao Nuo's ear as he spoke in a low voice, "Don't be sad; I'm still here."
Those words were like an enchantment that made Qiao Nuo believe him. She buried her head in the crook of Jin Chengyan's neck.
"Will you always be here?" she asked, afraid of sudden disappearances and the fear of being abandoned.
"As long as you need me, I will be there." Who doesn't know how to say comforting words? Yet, how many truly follow through?
