“Wife's duties?” Qiao Nuo's laughter rang like wind chimes, enchanting Jin Chengyan to the point of distraction. “Should I also allow you to exercise the rights of a husband?”
Her words lingered in the air, and Jin Chengyan captured her final note with his lips.
Under the moonlight, by the edge of the swimming pool, Jin Chengyan kissed Qiao Nuo softly.
She didn’t close her eyes, instead gazing at the man so close to her. His face was strikingly handsome, capable of stopping people in their tracks just by walking down the street.
Qiao Nuo remembered seeing Jin Chengyan from afar at a banquet she attended with her father. He stood at the center of the crowd, radiating an undeniable brilliance and an untamed spirit.
In that moment, other men lost their luster, while her heart fluttered solely for Jin Chengyan.
His eyelashes were long, casting shadows on his eyelids, each one seemingly countable. His nose was perfectly shaped, and she felt an urge to touch it.
Every part of him was utterly captivating.
But this man named Jin Chengyan, even though he was within reach, was someone Qiao Nuo felt she could never truly possess.
She closed her eyes, deeply immersing herself in this pleasure devoid of love.
...
Later, after taking a shower and lying in bed, it was already late into the night. Qiao Nuo was too exhausted to speak; all she wanted was to sleep.
He had brought her to his room from the very beginning. After everything was over, Qiao Nuo lacked the strength to return downstairs and could only fall asleep here.
When Jin Chengyan emerged from the bathroom, he found Qiao Nuo peacefully lying on his bed, turned away from him.
Initially, he had no intention of things unfolding this way, but as they kissed, he lost control. By the time he realized what was happening, he had already taken a shower, done what needed to be done, and even crossed lines that shouldn’t have been crossed.
He could only think that when it came to Qiao Nuo, he seemed to lack any resolve.
With a soft sigh, Jin Chengyan got into bed and turned off the lamp on his side. Instantly, the room was enveloped in darkness.
After a while, as Jin Chengyan grew accustomed to the dark, he could still see the figure lying beside him.
For so many years, Jin Chengyan had slept alone. Last night and tonight, however, there was a woman named Qiao Nuo by his side.
But the feelings of those two nights were entirely different.
Perhaps after a moment's hesitation, Jin Chengyan reached out and pulled Qiao Nuo into his embrace.
He felt her body tremble slightly, as if she wanted to struggle, probably thinking he was going to initiate something again. But once she sensed that he only wanted to hold her close, she relaxed and drifted back to sleep.
This was truly just pure sleep; Jin Chengyan held the person in his arms but found it difficult to fall asleep for a long time.
Without any other factors involved, he simply couldn’t sleep, even though he felt somewhat tired.
It wasn’t until he heard the steady rhythm of her breathing that Jin Chengyan let out a soft sigh. “Qiao Nuo, are you asleep?”
The only response was an infinite silence.
And perhaps this was exactly what he had been waiting for.
He held Qiao Nuo's hand, gently spreading her delicate fingers apart, while his other hand traced letters in her palm.
Three words.
After finishing, Jin Chengyan wrapped his large hand around Qiao Nuo's small one and placed it against her chest.
"Qiao Nuo, I can't give you anything else," Jin Chengyan whispered softly in her ear. Perhaps it was only in the darkness, when she didn’t respond, that he could utter such words.
He buried his head in the crook of Qiao Nuo's neck, inhaling her unique scent, and slowly drifted off to sleep.
Meanwhile, the person in Jin Chengyan's arms slowly opened her eyes. She remained still for a long time, but the dampness on the pillow made her uncomfortable.
Tears flowed uncontrollably, never ceasing since he had written those words in her palm.
The only thing he could say were those three words; he had nothing else to give.
Jin Chengyan, you still love Ruan Shengyu in the end.
Even though you know she understands you are willing to give up your identity as the Jin Family Young Master for her, even though you know she is reluctant to publicly acknowledge your relationship, even though you know… the person in her heart is not you, you still love her.
Yes, even though I know you know that everything I do is because I like you, even though I know that you are with me more out of impulse than anything else, even though I know… the person in your heart is not me, I am still willing to be with you like this.
Because love!
Love makes one feel so humble, so humble that it sinks into the dust, devoid of any self-respect.
I and you, we have always been the same kind of person.
Two people who share the same plight, are we now just warming each other?
Qiao Nuo took a deep breath and closed her eyes. Despite Jin Chengyan's warm chest behind her, she felt no warmth at all.
Her heart had already sunk to the depths of the sea.
...
When she woke up in the morning, Jin Chengyan was no longer in the room. This was for the best, as it spared her the awkwardness of facing him directly.
As Qiao Nuo washed up and got dressed, she suddenly remembered that she hadn’t returned to the small apartment yesterday. Qiao Chen must be worried sick!
She hurried downstairs and found her phone, which was filled with missed calls from Qiao Chen. She immediately called back.
The person on the other end picked up almost instantly. "Sister, where are you? Why didn’t you answer your phone all night? Do you know I was about to call the police? I even asked Huo Yawen for help; he’s been looking for you all night! Who do you think you’re making anxious here?"
Qiao Chen yelled into the phone, sounding genuinely frantic.
Qiao Nuo rubbed her temples. If it hadn’t been for everything that happened with Jin Chengyan last night, she wouldn’t have forgotten that Qiao Chen was still waiting at home.
"I'm fine. Yesterday... I had some things to deal with and stayed out overnight. Don’t worry about me." Qiao Nuo wasn’t sure how to explain to Qiao Chen that at ten o'clock last night, the Jin Family would announce to the media that she was to become a member of their family.
"How can I not worry? Are you still at the Jin Family? I’m coming to find you!"
"Don't..." Qiao Nuo recalled how the butler from the Jin Family had come by yesterday, and Qiao Chen had overheard. "Qiao Chen, I have something to tell you. Please don't get too worked up, but it's not really a big deal."
"As long as you're okay, we can talk about it when you get home..."
"I got married. This news will be announced in two hours, and the groom is Jin Chengyan from the Jin Family."
There was a moment of silence on the other end of the line, followed by Qiao Chen's laughter. "Ha! Are you joking? How could you possibly be married? How could it be someone from the Jin Family..."
As Qiao Chen spoke, he began to feel that something was off.
On the day their father passed away, he had been so emotional at the hospital that he hadn't thought about who had notified him to come. But now that he thought about it, the person who had called him seemed to be someone who was always by Jin Chengyan's side, and that day, Jin Chengyan had also been at the hospital with his sister.
One had to wonder, if there was nothing between him and his sister, why would he have been present during such a significant event?
"Let's talk later; I have things to do. Once everything settles down, I'll come home. We still need to sort out what happened with your fight yesterday." With that, Qiao Nuo hung up the phone.
On the other end, Qiao Chen stared at the disconnected call and then looked at Huo Yawen standing beside him, suddenly at a loss for words.
Huo Yawen was the first to break the silence. "If your sister is okay, I’ll head back to the hospital."
Qiao Chen mechanically nodded, but it was clear that he saw surprise and sadness on Huo Yawen's face.
Because Qiao Nuo was married.
How could Qiao Nuo be married?
Qiao Nuo couldn't make sense of the situation; it was still related to the Jin Family Young Master!
Just then, after hanging up the phone, the door to Jin Mansion swung open. Without realizing it, five or six women walked in. Aside from the leader, whom Qiao Nuo had met at Jin Family Mansion, she didn't recognize any of the others.
"Young Madam, there’s a press conference at ten o'clock. We were sent by Madam to assist you with your makeup and attire," Aunt Yun said politely to Qiao Nuo. She had been by Yu Xin's side for many years; although she was a servant, her loyalty surpassed that of an ordinary maid.
Qiao Nuo hesitated for a moment, wanting to decline their help, insisting she could manage on her own.
However, they had prepared several outfits and accessories, clearly not intending to let Qiao Nuo do it herself. Thus, she had no choice but to go along with their plans.
After a careful and elaborate dressing session, Qiao Nuo was escorted by Aunt Yun to the car, which took her directly to Jin's Building.
Qiao Nuo felt a bit… anxious. This was her first time facing so many people since the Qiao Family's bankruptcy, and after today, her life would likely undergo a dramatic transformation.
Furrowing her brows, Qiao Nuo closed her eyes and tried not to think about it anymore. After all, this was her own decision; she couldn't blame anyone else.
Suddenly—"Ah!"—the car came to a sudden stop, and due to the force of inertia, Qiao Nuo slammed against the back of the driver's seat, feeling dizzy.
It seemed like everyone was caught off guard as the driver's door was flung open, and a figure in black swiftly threw the driver out!
Just as Qiao Nuo opened her mouth to speak, the car sped off at an unexpected pace.
Looking out the window, Qiao Nuo saw the poor driver running after them for quite some distance, but he was helplessly unable to catch up.
She turned her head to look at the person in the driver's seat, feeling a throbbing pain in her temples.
...
“Boss, the press conference is ready. Have you... memorized your speech?” After all, this was Alice's first time writing a press release for Jin Chengyan. In the past, their Boss had always spoken off the cuff, effortlessly articulating his thoughts without needing a script.
However, this time, for what should have been a straightforward marriage announcement—much simpler than any business negotiation or international discussion—Jin Chengyan had asked her to draft a script. This was not typical of him.
So Alice felt it was necessary to check in with him.
Jin Chengyan tossed the script onto the table. With his remarkable memory, he only needed to read it once to commit it to memory. “Hmm.”
He nodded and glanced at the time; it was already nine fifty. Yet, the other party involved had not yet arrived.
Ten minutes later, Jin Chengyan stood alone on the stage.
A reporter asked, “Jin Shao, today’s announcement of your marriage seems to be missing the bride?”
