After finishing their meal, Chu Yuxiu had his hands washed and face wiped by Qiao Nuo. She intended to send him home, but the little guy, satisfied from his meal, had already fallen asleep on Jin Chengyan's bed!
Qiao Nuo gently covered him with a blanket. The little one slept soundly, instinctively licking his lips as if he hadn’t tasted such delicious food in a long time!
Meanwhile, Jin Chengyan sat on the sofa, watching all of this with a slight smile at the corners of his mouth.
As Qiao Nuo stood up, she turned around and caught sight of Jin Chengyan's charming smile. Remembering how he had been looking at her just moments ago made her cheeks flush.
Jin Chengyan found it quite intriguing. This woman could be incredibly brave when she wanted to be, even daring to flirt with him! They had shared intimate moments together, yet whenever he looked at her seriously, she would blush like a shy girl.
It was truly fascinating how she could switch between such contrasting styles so effortlessly.
“I’m feeling a bit full; come take a walk with me,” Jin Chengyan said as he put on the coat that had been left at the hospital, ready for a stroll.
“You didn’t eat much just now…” Qiao Nuo accidentally spoke the truth. “And Chu Yuxiu is still sleeping; children need someone to watch over them while they sleep!”
What a carefree uncle he was.
“I’ll have a nurse keep an eye on him,” Jin Chengyan replied, slightly frowning at her resistance. “Come here.”
At his words, Qiao Nuo wilted and immediately followed him.
Jin Chengyan arranged for a nurse to watch over Chu Yuxiu in the room before leading Qiao Nuo downstairs.
In the evening, there were indeed quite a few people out for walks in the hospital garden, mostly older folks. However, Qiao Nuo hadn’t seen anyone as handsome as Jin Chengyan, especially not someone wearing a patient gown.
Passersby—whether doctors, nurses, or visitors—couldn’t help but steal glances at Jin Chengyan. After all, this man was strikingly handsome; even in a patient gown paired with an overcoat, he exuded runway model vibes.
“Is your leg still not healed?” Qiao Nuo noticed that Jin Chengyan wasn’t walking quickly. It wasn’t that he was deliberately slowing down for her; he simply couldn’t walk fast due to his condition.
Jin Chengyan nodded. The incident from six years ago had inflicted devastating damage on his leg. It was already fortunate that he managed to save one leg; some lingering issues were only natural.
“Do you like children?” Jin Chengyan asked her another question.
“Um, I guess it’s okay,” Qiao Nuo replied, still looking at his legs. What kind of deep love could make him disregard everything to block that iron rod?
“Qiao Nuo…” Jin Chengyan called her name. She didn’t particularly like it when he called her that; whenever he added an “ah” at the end, Qiao Nuo knew he had something to say to her, and most of the time, it wasn’t anything good.
She stepped forward because Jin Chengyan had stopped to wait for her.
When she reached him, Jin Chengyan took her hand, and they walked together down the road.
His hand was warm and broad, and holding onto it made her feel especially safe.
But someone had once told Qiao Nuo that a sense of security wasn’t something given by others; it was something one had to earn for oneself.
“Aren’t you hungry?” Jin Chengyan suddenly said.
“Huh?” Qiao Nuo was puzzled. Why was Jin Chengyan not following the usual script?
He tightened his grip on her hand. “You didn’t eat anything earlier. I’m taking you out to get something to eat.”
Qiao Nuo hadn’t processed this yet and directly asked, “Didn’t you have something to tell me?” She was prepared for him to bring up what happened in the afternoon; he must know about Ji Xining’s little tricks.
But instead, Jin Chengyan only asked if she was hungry.
“That little fatty Chu Yuxiu ate everything. I’ll take you somewhere nice to eat,” he said as he led Qiao Nuo out of the small garden of the hospital and hailed a taxi!
By the time Qiao Nuo realized what was happening, they were already in the car.
“You don’t have any dietary restrictions, do you?”
“No…”
"That's good!" Then, Jin Chengyan provided an address, and Qiao Nuo was surprised to find it was the place where she used to attend university.
The location was a restaurant in the university town, where Qiao Nuo had dined before.
Given that it was situated in a college area, the restaurant wasn't particularly upscale. Qiao Nuo couldn't understand how Jin Chengyan even knew about it!
However, when the car stopped in front of the restaurant, Jin Chengyan reached for his wallet only to realize that it wasn't in his trench coat pocket.
Qiao Nuo quietly took out her own wallet and used her transportation card to pay as they both got out of the car.
"Wow, I didn't know taxis could accept cards!" Jin Chengyan exclaimed, feeling like he had discovered something new.
Qiao Nuo replied, "..." That was because it was the first time the young master had taken a taxi.
"You said you would take me out to eat, but you didn't even bring your wallet," Qiao Nuo teased as she led Jin Chengyan into the restaurant.
Unexpectedly, Jin Chengyan wrapped his arm around Qiao Nuo's waist from behind and cheekily said, "You're my wife; what's wrong with using your money?"
How brazen...
Yet, Qiao Nuo found herself strangely fond of that title—wife.
As they entered the restaurant, they attracted quite a few curious glances.
Jin Chengyan was undeniably handsome, and it was noteworthy that he had snuck out in a hospital gown just to grab a bite. The woman beside him looked like she could still be a university student.
But somehow, they seemed to match well together.
What a peculiar pair.
"Welcome! We have a table by the window upstairs; please follow me," said the boss, a man with a beer belly. Qiao Nuo remembered him from her previous visits; he looked just the same now. Clearly having seen countless customers, the boss had already forgotten about Qiao Nuo.
When Jin Chengyan walked in, Boss's eyes lit up. "Hey, it's you, Mr. Jin! It's been a while since I last saw you!" Boss greeted Jin Chengyan warmly.
Jin Chengyan shook hands with Boss.
"You're sick and still wearing a hospital gown? You shouldn't be eating such greasy food when you're unwell!"
Indeed, this place was a barbecue restaurant, and Qiao Nuo couldn't understand why Jin Chengyan would choose to eat here.
"My wife was craving something, so I brought her out to eat," Jin Chengyan said with a doting expression.
Qiao Nuo looked confused; it wasn't her idea to come here at all!
"You two are married! Congratulations! This meal is on me, consider it your wedding gift!" Boss, being generous, led Jin Chengyan and Qiao Nuo upstairs. He asked Qiao Nuo if there was anything she didn't like before heading down to let the chef start grilling.
Throughout the entire exchange, Qiao Nuo was bewildered.
"You know the Boss here?" Jin Chengyan remarked, surprised at how well-connected he seemed.
"There are many things about me that you don't know," he replied.
The two of them knew very little about each other.
Even though Jin Chengyan had all the information about Qiao Nuo from the moment she was born, data is lifeless while people are dynamic; her habits would change over time.
What was most difficult to understand was the heart of that person.
What thoughts occupied that heart could not be captured in any data.
"Are you willing to let me know?" Qiao Nuo countered.
Jin Chengyan did not respond. "The grilled scallops here are delicious; you should eat more. I'll just have some porridge."
Such a clumsy change of topic was not lost on Qiao Nuo.
Jin Chengyan could engage in the most intimate activities with her, they could become one, yet the moment Qiao Nuo brought up matters of the heart, even in the slightest way, Jin Chengyan would find various excuses to skip over the topic.
He led her in circles, never addressing the main issue.
Before long, a plate of barbecued skewers was placed in front of Qiao Nuo, full of color and aroma, while Jin Chengyan had only a bowl of plain porridge before him.
"How did you know my leg was injured?" Jin Chengyan finally broached the subject.
As Qiao Nuo ate her skewers without concern for her image, holding them with her hands and getting some cumin on the corner of her mouth, she paused at his question.
Clearly, she wouldn’t tell Jin Chengyan that Ji Xining had detailed information about his injury from six years ago.
"I read about it online. Even though so much time has passed since your injury, if you search for it, there’s still plenty of information. You have to believe that the internet is a magical place!" Qiao Nuo replied confidently.
Jin Chengyan let out a cold laugh. "Do you believe everything you read online?"
Back then, it was impossible for someone like Jin Chengyan or Yan Beiting to completely suppress all news about the incident. Ruan Shengyu was an outsider, and since the Jin family wanted to distance themselves from Ruan Shengyu, they naturally never mentioned him.
"Truth or lies, if you take it seriously, you'll lose," Qiao Nuo said casually after glancing at the information. "But if your leg problems really stem from Ruan Shengyu, then I understand why you're so desperate to win her over now."
"Oh?" It was the first time someone had analyzed Jin Chengyan's feelings like this.
"Perverted thoughts!" Qiao Nuo teased playfully, tilting her head.
Jin Chengyan didn’t bother to argue with her; he simply replied, "You wouldn’t understand."
Qiao Nuo didn’t press further. There were many things she didn’t understand; did she need to pry into every single one?
She put down the two bamboo sticks and said with great seriousness, "Jin Chengyan, from now on, please never mention your past to me. As a petty wife, I will get angry."
Jin Chengyan took a tissue and helped Qiao Nuo wipe her mouth.
It was such a simple gesture that made all of Qiao Nuo's previous righteous words fade away.
Truly, just a little kindness from others could make her feel light as a feather.
Since earlier at the hospital, she had felt the atmosphere was wonderfully chaotic. She watched him eat with Chu Yuxiu, then they strolled together before heading to the restaurant.
What beautiful memories they were!
Jin Chengyan quietly watched Qiao Nuo eat.
In fact, earlier in the hospital garden, when he called her name, what he wanted to say wasn't about going out to eat!
He just hadn't expected that the words would come out like that.
Perhaps what Qiao Nuo said about living well these past few years wasn't a bad suggestion after all.
But if he really did that, it would be unfair to Qiao Nuo.
So he would rather take her around in circles than linger on the main point for even a moment.
...
After dinner, Jin Chengyan suggested taking a walk to aid digestion. Clearly, he hadn't eaten much all evening; it was Qiao Nuo who needed to digest.
However, seeing Jin Chengyan dressed so lightly in just a hospital gown underneath his thick coat made her worry about him getting cold.
Qiao Nuo took off her bright red scarf and wrapped it around herself; it matched perfectly with her black outfit.
“If you catch a cold, your mom will definitely say that I didn’t take good care of you!” Qiao Nuo wrapped the scarf around Jin Chengyan’s neck twice.
However, after taking off the scarf, Qiao Nuo felt a chill in the air around her neck.
She walked quickly, and soon enough, she felt warm again.
Jin Chengyan watched Qiao Nuo ahead of him, feeling a mix of emotions he couldn’t quite describe. He stepped forward, pulled out one half of the scarf, and wrapped it around Qiao Nuo’s neck.
From a distance, they looked like two halves of a whole.
But even in such closeness, walking through the university town, they didn’t feel awkward at all.
Couples even more affectionate than them passed by occasionally, some stopping to share a kiss when the mood struck.
They were just like any ordinary couple, enjoying their time together after a meal.
Jin Chengyan couldn’t remember the last time he had such a leisurely moment.
Thinking of this, he pulled Qiao Nuo closer to him.
This girl always made him feel the thrill of love, stirring his heart that had long settled into calmness back into a rapid rhythm.
“Stay with me at the hospital tonight; we’ll go home tomorrow.”
Upon hearing this, Qiao Nuo instinctively frowned. “Do you have to think about that every day? Don’t you ever get tired? Is it lonely in the hospital?”
It had only been a few days since they last met, and now he wanted her to stay in the hospital overnight! It was a hospital, after all; the soundproofing wasn’t great!
To her surprise, Jin Chengyan responded with an unmistakable chuckle.
“I didn’t say anything; it’s your mind that’s not pure,” Jin Chengyan teased. “Or maybe you’ve been thinking about that while I’ve been away.”
He whispered softly in Qiao Nuo's ear, the warmth making her feel a tickle at her neck, prompting her to push him away. How shameless could this man be, discussing such things in public!
"Jin Chengyan, you've gone too far!"
"Too far? What would you consider enough?" He pressed on, his lips brushing against Qiao Nuo's cheek.
"You’re alone in the hospital! If you can't handle it, just call a nurse. There are so many beautiful nurses; who knows how long they've been eyeing you!" Qiao Nuo snapped, pushing Jin Chengyan away in frustration.
But the scarf was still wrapped around both of their necks, preventing her from retreating too far. It was quite annoying.
Yet Jin Chengyan was serious!
He yanked the scarf, pulling Qiao Nuo closer to him.
"Qiao Nuo, are you trying to let your husband sleep with another woman? You’re really generous! If you don’t mind, I could just go back and sleep with that nurse who gave me the injection!" He knew exactly how to hit Qiao Nuo's soft spot.
"You dare!" Qiao Nuo grabbed his collar and said fiercely.
