A few days later, the Autumn Pavilion set up a stage for a performance. The Empress Dowager instructed all the palace consorts and the Emperor to watch the show together. 0

Consort Chang, looking pale and unwell, curled up in Long Huan's embrace, trembling with fear. 0

Minjin's gaze fell upon them but was met with Long Huan's icy stare, causing her to feign innocence and lower her head. 0

"Take your life!" Just as the performance reached its climax, a performer who had been dancing on stage suddenly drew a large knife from his side and swung it at Long Huan. 0

Seeing this, Long Huan instinctively pulled Consort Chang aside to shield her, but in doing so, the assassin's blade was now poised at his throat. 0

Panic erupted around them as the consorts screamed and fled in all directions. 0

"Don't kill me! Please!" Consort Chang cried out, trembling as she clutched her robe. She struggled to break free from Long Huan's embrace, wanting to distance herself from him. 0

Long Huan thought she was merely frightened and tightened his hold on her. 0

"This is the inner court of the palace. You may have entered, but escaping is another matter. If you truly kill the Emperor, you won't live either," Minjin stepped forward, fists clenched, glaring coldly at the assassin. 0

"Hmph, I came prepared to die," the assassin replied with a chilling smile. 0

"Dog Emperor! Die!" he shouted fiercely, raising his knife to strike at both of them. 0

Consort Chang suddenly struggled free from his embrace, reflexively pushing Long Huan towards the blade. 0

"You!" Long Huan turned back in disbelief, seeing Consort Chang's tear-streaked face as she shook her head frantically. 0

He had thought that the blade would surely pierce through him, but the sound of steel cutting through flesh echoed in his ears without the anticipated searing pain. 0

" Minjin?!" Long Huan stared in shock at Minjin, who had shielded him with her own body. The broad blade had driven straight into her frail form, yet her dark eyes remained defiant, a sight that pierced his heart. 0

"Ugh..." As the bloodied blade was pulled from her body, Minjin let out a muffled groan and immediately coughed up a mouthful of blood. 0

Why? You clearly despise me; why would you take this blow for me?" Long Huan cradled her slipping body, reaching out to touch the blood pooling at the corner of her mouth. 0

How could Minjin, who argued with him daily, risk her life for him when even Pu'er had betrayed him at a critical moment? 0

"This wound... is to repay you for your child's life. You don't have to feel guilty," Minjin said stubbornly, forcing a smile that didn't reach her eyes, unaware that each drop of blood spilling from her mouth was making Long Huan's heart ache more. 0

"I don’t need you to repay for my child's life; he is he, and you are you! Borjigit Minjin, I command you not to die!" Long Huan held her tightly. 0

At last, he understood what true love was and who deserved his lifelong care. 0

"You still... won’t forgive me. How could I... have fallen for you? So petty..." Minjin spoke as tears streamed down her face upon hearing him say she must not die. 0

She felt a sudden sense of contentment, but soon fatigue washed over her, and she thought closing her eyes would be enough. 0

Long Huan watched her childlike complaints, but as her eyelids gradually closed, he was instantly alarmed, his face turning pale. He gently cupped her small face, calling out to her again and again, but unfortunately, the person in his arms could hear nothing. 0

"Your... Your Majesty." Consort Chang stepped forward, her fingertips just brushing his shoulder when Long Huan abruptly stood up and shot her a cold glance. 0

She was taken aback, her face paling as she stepped back, trembling and collapsing onto the ground. She understood very well what lay ahead; losing favor was minor, but being stripped of her title and cast into the cold palace was a grave matter. 0

When the Imperial Guards arrived, Long Huan frantically rushed out of Autumn Pavilion, clutching Minjin, who was covered in blood, shouting for the imperial physician. 0
