At the main entrance of the Jin Yang County Office, the Yard Officer on night duty sat outside in a chair, dozing off. Wrapped tightly in a thin blanket, he had his head slightly bowed, emitting soft snores. In his dreams, perhaps he was imagining something delicious, as he smacked his lips a couple of times and tilted his head, sinking deeper into slumber.
A slender figure gracefully descended from the wall opposite him, moving silently like a falling leaf.
The newcomer seemed completely oblivious to his presence, slipping into the county office's backyard like a nimble cat.
After a moment's hesitation, the ghostly figure turned toward the easternmost room.
In the dead of night, the courtyard was eerily quiet, with only the occasional distant croaks of night crows breaking the silence, adding an unsettling atmosphere to the stillness.
Using the dim moonlight as guidance, the figure in black cautiously approached the window and gently peeked inside.
The room's decor was lavishly extravagant—crystal curtains, cloud-patterned brocade blankets, and at each corner of the un-drawn drapes hung sachets of orchid musk. The lingering scent of high-quality calming incense mixed with the cool fragrance created an invigorating aroma. Spotting a foot dangling halfway off the bed, a faint smile crept onto the intruder's lips.
The figure in black quietly pushed open the door and tiptoed to the bedside, slowly extending a hand to tuck in the blanket for the person lying there.
Zhao Zichen, still lost in dreams, seemed to sense something. His nose twitched slightly as he turned over to face outward, seemingly half-awake as he cracked open his eyes just a sliver…
…
Lin Jingxia stormed into Zhao Zichen's room and found him flustered and unsure of what he was doing. With a guilty expression on his face, he held up an empty teacup to his lips while forcing a nervous smile at her. “Oh, Jing Xia! You're up so early!”
“What do you mean 'up so early'? What were you just doing? What shady business were you up to?” Lin Jingxia retorted fiercely as she lifted the beaded curtain to glance at his bed and then hurriedly darted behind the screen to search around.
"You really look a bit like you're here to catch someone in the act!" Zhao Zichen, seeing her walk towards the inner room, let out a sigh of relief. He turned his gaze to the leaves outside, which were swaying slightly in the wind, and resumed his usual nonchalant demeanor, teasingly asking, "So, have you found anything?"
Lin Jingxia angrily flicked the beaded curtain aside with a sharp sound, huffing as she plopped down heavily next to Zhao Zichen. She poured herself a cup of cold tea from the previous night and gulped it down before slamming the cup back onto the table, raising her voice to ask, "Is Brother Qing Yuan really not here with you?"
" elder Feng? How could he possibly be here?" Zhao Zichen exaggeratedly placed a hand over his heart. "Are you really thinking that I have an affair with him? I swear on my conscience that I hold nothing but pure intentions towards you..."
Before he could finish, Lin Jingxia suddenly deflated like a punctured balloon, lowering her head in defeat. There were even glimmers of tears in her eyes as she said pitifully, " Brother Qing Yuan seems to be avoiding me lately!"
"Avoiding you?" Zhao Zichen was taken aback and then burst into laughter. "Hey, I'm not trying to criticize you, but if you're getting upset over this, isn't that a bit overdramatic? He's been investigating The Shape-Shifting Silver Wolf's hideout recently. He’s worried about Lao Fang and the others, so he's been taking matters into his own hands..."
"That's not it!" Lin Jingxia fought back her tears and said anxiously, "He's been working day and night on cases lately. I'm worried he’ll wear himself out, so I wanted to tell him not to push himself so hard. But every time he sees me, he either says he's too tired and wants to rest or that he has to leave right away. He doesn’t give me a chance to talk at all! Yet he clearly has time to feed medicine to my father and even train the Captains. He completely ignores me! The strangest part is that he didn’t come home at all last night..."
Zhao Zichen's heart sank. Although he knew Lin Jingxia's concerns were not unfounded, he maintained a relaxed exterior and comforted her, "I really can't stand you girls. You tend to overthink things when there's nothing going on. Don’t you know how elder Feng is? When he's on a case, he forgets everyone..."
"That's not the point!"
