“ elder Feng, something has happened…” The door was suddenly pushed open with a loud bang by someone who had just closed it.
Lin Jingxia quickly covered her face and buried her head in Feng Qingyuan's embrace, resembling a frightened fawn. Feng Qingyuan let out a cold snort, his gaze sharp enough to intimidate Zhao Zichen as he looked toward the door, squinting slightly with a hint of displeasure. “It seems the prince has never learned how to knock.”
“You… you all… must you be so reckless? It’s still broad daylight! You’ve left me, Qing Lin, in the courtyard feeling like a voyeur! If I’m not careful, I might end up facilitating the romance between my beloved woman and my rival in love on their path to Wushan!”
Feng Qingyuan noticed the warmth on Lin Jingxia's face from shyness as she dared not peek out. He struggled to suppress a smile and coldly asked, “What exactly is going on?”
“I’m in shock! I need to calm down before I can answer your question!” Zhao Zichen said, turning around and squatting by the pillar in the corridor, sulking like a petulant child.
“Someone sent a coffin, and it’s just sitting at the county office!”
A young woman dressed in black suddenly stepped forward, her expression serious and her tone laced with tension.
Feng Qingyuan’s previously smiling eyes instantly turned icy. He pushed Lin Jingxia away and said solemnly, “Wait here for me. Don’t come out!” With that, he dashed out like a gust of wind.
Lin Jingxia was taken aback; her head, which had been lowered in shyness, lifted slightly as she stole a glance at Zhao Zichen. Seeing him turned away from her, she let out a sigh of relief.
Her gaze lingered on Zhao Zichen for a moment before shifting to the unfamiliar woman before her.
Curiosity got the better of her; ultimately, her inquisitive spirit overcame her shyness. With a friendly smile, she spoke up, “You look quite unfamiliar!”
“My name is Liu Yun,” the young woman replied.
For some reason, a faint blush crept onto her cheeks as she shyly glanced at Zhao Zichen, who was still drawing circles. "I am the prince's personal shadow guard! When the prince came to Jin Yang, he left me in the capital to handle some matters, and I just arrived in Jin Yang this morning!"
"Why are you blushing while introducing yourself?" Zhao Zichen looked up, his face filled with helplessness as he said irritably, "Can you at least act like a shadow guard? Can't you be a bit cooler, a bit more mysterious, or even a little more violent?"
"Your Highness!"
Liu Yun's face turned even redder at his words, resembling a wronged little wife. Her eyes were filled with fear, and her voice trembled slightly. "The tea you wanted is already brewed; it's on that stone table. I think I should find a cooler place to stay!"
With that, she turned to quickly escape the awkward situation.
Upon hearing this, Lin Jingxia felt a surge of blood rush to her head, completely forgetting the earlier embarrassment.
She stepped forward and enthusiastically linked her arm with Liu Yun's. "Miss Liu Yun, why are you so afraid of him? What gives him that right? You are a shadow guard; you are the one protecting him! If you're unhappy, you can just watch him get killed without caring! From another perspective, you hold his life and death in your hands; why should you be afraid of him? Come on, let’s ignore him. You just arrived and haven’t explored the streets yet. How about we go to the night market together for some barbecue? What do you think?"
"Ah? W-will the prince agree to that?"
Liu Yun clearly wasn't used to Lin Jingxia's enthusiastic familiarity. Her gaze fell on the arm that Lin Jingxia was holding, her face turning as red as a ripe apple.
"Oh come on, don't worry! If he dares to refuse, I'll take care of him for you! Let's first see what that coffin is all about!"
Lin Jingxia pulled Liu Yun along and started walking ahead.
Zhao Zichen, who had been squatting and drawing circles, watched the two women walk further away with a look of shock and helplessness on his face, utterly bewildered by the turn of events.
He murmured to himself, "Does anyone still remember that I am a prince? Speaking of which, I really am a prince!"
