Xin'er, the maid by Wandie's side, had been serving her since childhood, having come with the Tang family's dowry. She was the most attentive and caring companion.
Seeing her mistress growing increasingly thin, Xin'er took it upon herself to write a letter to Bao Sinian. In the letter, she detailed Wandie's current situation and ended with an invitation for him to meet.
A few days later, when Xin'er handed Wandie the reply, her heart was filled with both excitement and sorrow. In the letter, he expressed his guilt, lamenting how he had ruined her happiness.
Tears streamed down her cheeks, dropping onto the letter and instantly blurring the ink, mirroring her chaotic and damp heart.
That night, Jiang Haotian was still out socializing.
Xin'er discreetly sent away the old matron guarding the door and the young servant at the back entrance. She hurriedly stuffed a bundle into Wandie's arms and urged, "Miss, if you see Young Master Bao, just go with him! Never come back!"
Wandie appreciated her loyalty but worried that leaving would put Xin'er in danger. She felt torn and unsure of what to do.
However, Xin'er calmly pushed her out the door, not allowing her any further hesitation.
Thus, Wandie finally escaped as she wished. She stumbled to the agreed-upon alleyway where she found Bao Sinian waiting.
Without a word, he pulled her into his embrace, holding her frail body tightly as if she were a rock—unmovable and steadfast.
Wandie gently closed her eyes; his faint scent of grass brought her comfort. She said, "Sinian, take me away! This time, let’s go far away and never come back."
"Yes, let’s go to a place where no one knows us. You know the secret recipe for You Lan Wine; we can open our own tavern and live our loving days together."
He rested his chin on the top of her head, dreaming blissfully about their future.
Wandie suddenly lifted her face, a hint of confusion interrupting his daydream. "Sinian, I don't know the secret recipe for You Lan Wine. Father has never told anyone."
His expression stiffened for a moment, but then he smiled again and said, "It's okay, there's still me. I will take care of you."
Such a simple declaration of love instantly dispelled Wandie's doubts. She shyly nodded and buried her face deep in his embrace.
The next day, the Jiang family mobilized nearly everyone in the household, even including people from the Police Station, to search for Wandie.
A day passed with no results, and the Jiang family offered a high reward for information about her whereabouts. The city buzzed with excitement.
Little did Jiang Haotian know that Wandie and Bao Sinian had already left the city overnight and were hiding in an inconspicuous little village. Although they could only eat simple meals and wear rough linen clothes, Wandie still felt content and happy.
Unfortunately, such days would not last long.
Seven days later, Bao Sinian suggested going into the city to buy some supplies, telling Wandie to stay home and wait for him.
Unexpectedly, this casual parting turned into a permanent farewell.
When Jiang Haotian's men burst in, Wandie was preparing lunch, holding a ladle to add water to the pot, with large oil stains splattered across her coarse linen dress.
"Wandie, come home with me! This is not the life you should be living."
Before coming here, Jiang Haotian's heart was tumultuous as he thought of ways to humiliate and punish her.
However, upon seeing her current pitiful state, his heart suddenly softened. The harsh words that were on the tip of his tongue were swallowed back down.
Wandie knew she could not escape Jiang Haotian's grasp. Her only request was to say goodbye to Bao Sinian before leaving.
Unfortunately, even this small request was not permitted by Jiang Haotian.
Thus, Wandie returned once more to the gilded cage.
Jiang Haotian did not hold her escape against her but instead placed the blame on Xin'er.
