The sunlight outside remained bright and cheerful, while Su Mingxian leaned against the wall outside the hospital room, her arms crossed and her gaze somewhat distant.
The smell of disinfectant was both unpleasant and familiar.
It brought back many unpleasant memories, leaving her in a particularly bad mood.
The Yellow-Clothed Thief emerged from the hospital room with red eyes. "Sister, this time we really owe it to you; otherwise, Rat's leg would have been lost."
With that, he dropped to his knees, followed closely by several of his underlings.
"What are you doing? Get up!" This was a hospital, bustling with people. Su Mingxian's expression changed instantly. "And don't think that kneeling and bowing a few times means you can avoid paying me back. Don't even think about it."
That was the money she had saved to buy a house for Qian Qian.
Just thinking about it made her heart ache. Was it easy for her to save up money?
But looking at the frail child lying on the hospital bed, she gritted her teeth and paid up. What else could she do? She couldn't just stand by and watch someone die.
Upon hearing this, the Yellow-Clothed Kid quickly waved his hands. "No, we didn't mean to default on our debt. Sister, don't worry; we will definitely pay you back, we promise."
His words were earnest, tears streaming down his face, but his eyes were filled with gratitude. Without Su Mingxian's help, even if he had stolen that amount of money, it would have been merely a drop in the bucket. Thus, their gratitude was genuine.
Su Mingxian could sense this sincerity. The one in yellow was the oldest among them at just twenty-two years old, while the youngest, Rat, was still a minor.
"I am Su Mingxian, but you can call me Sister Xian. The term 'big sister' sounds terrible," Su Mingxian said with a look of disdain. "And how do you plan to repay? Are you going to keep stealing?"
As soon as she finished speaking, several of them immediately lowered their heads. The Yellow-Clothed Kid, avoiding her gaze, said, "We don't want to steal either, but what else can we do?"
Su Mingxian frowned. "You have hands and feet; why can't you work? What about your families? Don't they care?"
"We have no families and no relatives," a tall, sturdy boy with a dark complexion spoke up.
"Hey, Heizi," the Yellow-Clothed Kid quickly reprimanded him, then turned to Su Mingxian to explain, "We're here looking for our families. We have nothing, and no one is willing to hire us."
Su Mingxian was taken aback. This was a group of abandoned children, relying on each other for warmth. Without any identification, no employer would dare hire them.
But they needed to eat, so they resorted to the simplest method: stealing.
Just a group of unfortunate souls.
After hearing this, Su Mingxian couldn't help but exhale deeply; it seemed her money would go down the drain.
Seeing her reaction, the Yellow-Clothed Kid immediately said, "Sister Xian, you saved the rat; that makes you my benefactor from Huangpu River. I promised to let you handle things as you wish. From now on, I am yours in life and in death."
Upon hearing this, Su Mingxian felt overwhelmed. "Don't be ridiculous! You think I'm going to take care of you for the rest of your life just because I spent a few thousand? Dream on."
The Huangpu River gave her a mournful look, his charming peach blossom eyes deep and alluring. No wonder this kid was so narcissistic; he certainly had the looks to back it up.
Unfortunately, Su Mingxian had no intention of keeping a little pet.
"The beauty trap won't work on me. Don't try that with me. You must return the money, but stealing is absolutely out of the question. How about this: I’m setting up a stall at the train station to sell Liangpi, and I could use some help. If you’re not afraid of hard work, come work for me. I’ll pay eight hundred a month, and if you do well, there will be bonuses."
Upon hearing this, everyone’s eyes widened with excitement. "Really? Sister Xian, don’t worry! We’re not afraid of hard work; we’ll do our best!"
