After hearing these words, Xu Shen truly found himself at a loss for what to say to his mother. The way they had spoken today was somewhat overwhelming, especially considering that their previous phone conversations had always been filled with exaggerated tones. It was hard to believe they were discussing emotional matters so openly today.
Although he had many other things to attend to, he felt it was important to have a proper conversation in this rare moment of calmness. It was not easy to engage in such a discussion, especially given that in the past, when he was younger, every conversation with his father would end in heated arguments, often resulting in disastrous outcomes.
However, perhaps due to his slightly older age now, he found himself handling issues with a newfound maturity and calmness. He began to think carefully about how to resolve matters, determined not to burden anyone unless absolutely necessary. He had seen how people would help him while simultaneously leveraging their connection to his parents.
He despised being referred to in such a manner, which is why he had refrained from sharing his name with anyone for a long time.
His mother said, "Next time I talk to you about something like this, can you agree more readily? Every time we have these discussions, you beat around the bush. In the end, you still have to come back and tell me again. Just agree directly next time; please don’t bring up all those irrelevant points. Because even if you say something else, it won’t matter. You’ll still have to do what I suggest."
Xu Shen replied, "How was I supposed to know you’d be so persistent? And you even brought up the past! I really underestimated you this time; I didn’t expect you’d pull this on me. But honestly, I can’t refuse you. After all, you are my mother. I really have no way of saying no to you. The moment I do, you become so serious. If agreeing makes you happy, how could I possibly refuse?
If I were to refuse again next time, who knows what kind of tactics you might come up with? I truly admire women like you; now I understand why my father has been so afraid of you all these years. Your words can be quite relentless when given the slightest opportunity. My admiration for you just keeps growing."
His mother responded, "Why do you make me sound like such an unreasonable person? Please see clearly—I am your mother! If I were truly like that, you wouldn’t be doing so well either. You are a piece of flesh that fell from me and bear quite a resemblance to me. Don’t you think your looks share some similarities with mine? If it weren’t for me, where would your good looks come from?
So whether in speech or action, one should always act with integrity. Please don’t say such things again. Your father’s longevity is not just because of my charm or anything else; it has nothing to do with that. You shouldn’t judge our relationship when you don’t even have a girlfriend yourself."
