When Xu Shen heard those words, he couldn't help but gasp in surprise. He never expected his mother to say such things, and it made him feel a bit embarrassed. Although he didn't have a girlfriend, it was still uncomfortable for her to put it so bluntly.
But this was his mother, who never considered anyone's feelings when she spoke. She had always been this way—direct and straightforward. Those who knew him well understood that this was just her nature. Sometimes, her way of speaking had its advantages, but when it came to him, she never held back. Even though he was her child, she spoke to him without any pretense, often making him blush even through the phone screen.
"You always bring up these topics when we talk," he said. "If there's nothing else, you should really get some rest. It's my off-hours now, and I have a lot to take care of. Even though I don't have a girlfriend, I have other more important matters to attend to. I won’t let you down."
He continued, "You both have invested so much money in helping me achieve my dreams; there's no way I'd give up easily. I can't waste what you both have put into this. I need to work hard—there's no time for dating."
"If there's nothing else, please just rest early. Is it too much to ask for me to agree to your request?"
After he finished speaking, his mother didn’t respond but hung up the phone quickly. It felt as if all their previous conversations had been leading up to that final sentence.
As soon as Xu Shen's words faded, he heard a faint sound from the phone that startled him. He could hardly believe his ears and wondered if there was something wrong with the call. Bringing the phone closer to his eyes for confirmation, he realized that indeed his mother had hung up on him.
He hadn’t expected her intentions to be so obvious. She had called him and talked for so long just to get him to agree to her request. He didn’t really have a reason to refuse her, so he felt compelled to comply.
His mother’s swift actions were typical of her; she feared he might suddenly change his mind and say something different before hanging up. Although she presented herself as a strong woman on the outside, deep down she still had the heart of a little girl.
Sometimes during their conversations, she would reveal that she needed protection too. While she appeared powerful and many regarded her as an impressive woman, Xu Shen knew better—she was also someone who needed care and support; she just masked it with an air of strength.
In front of him and his father, she always retained that little girl side of herself. Of course, if others were around, she would never show such vulnerability.
