"Let's get started."
I opened the notebook in my hands. "I would like to ask, do you know if Fang Jia has offended anyone recently or has any enemies?"
This question was crucial for me. If no one had a grudge against Fang Jia, then what could be the motive for her murder?
There was nothing of value taken from the room, so the purpose of the crime couldn't have been robbery. However, to claim that there was a murder without motive simply didn't make sense.
"No," Wu Xiaowen replied firmly. "Absolutely not."
This was the answer I dreaded most. If no one around Fang Jia wanted her dead, then who killed her? Could it really be a random murder?
Even if it were a random killing, once the deed was done, why go to the trouble of staging the scene like something out of an American mystery novel, specifically like the Chinese Orange Mystery?
Bei Chen was right; if I couldn't figure this out, the case would remain unsolved.
"Why are you so sure that Fang Jia wouldn't offend anyone? Could it be a student? For example, a student cheating on an exam and the teacher confiscating their paper, or not completing their homework and being asked to bring their parents in?"
I often encountered such situations when I was in high school.
" Teacher Fang is very considerate towards her students. Officer, those situations you mentioned might apply to me, but Teacher Fang would never do that. As I said before, she is the most beloved teacher among the students. Sometimes when they cheat, she just patiently advises them and never confiscates their papers. That's something I could never do," Wu Xiaowen said earnestly.
I nodded helplessly and then turned to look at Bei Chen sitting beside me.
He had not said a word or asked a single question; he just sat there quietly.
This morning, I asked him if he knew why the murderer arranged the scene like that.
He said he didn't know.
I then asked him if he had identified the murderer yet.
He shook his head and said he still didn't know.
"By the way, Teacher Wu, has Fang Jia shown any unusual behavior lately?" I inquired.
"Unusual behavior?" Wu Xiaowen slightly raised his head, appearing to think. "Not really. Oh, right! She was very excited the other day when she told me she went to Senliu Park with Zhang Jian. They took a lot of pictures of animals, like African Lions, Jaguars, Sika Deer, and Tianshan Deer. She even said she would bring some photos to show me next time. But I don't think that's anything unusual, right?"
— Of course, that's not unusual.
It seems this trip was another dead end; I had no leads on Fang Jia at all.
It looks like I need to put this case aside for now and focus entirely on the serial murder case—solving one thing at a time.
Just as we were about to leave, another male teacher walked into the office.
"I'm really saddened by what happened to Fang Jia..." The male teacher sat down on the sofa and said to us, "I'm Liu Ziqiang, the math teacher at this school. I never expected something like this would happen to Teacher Fang; it's truly unpredictable... By the way, has the murderer been found?"
I carefully observed the man in front of me. He was about 1.78 meters tall, slim build, and appeared to be in his thirties.
"Not yet. By the way, Teacher Liu, can you provide any clues?" I continued asking. "If it was a colleague from the office, they should have had a decent relationship, right?"
"That's quite good," Liu Ziqiang nodded at me, and I noticed there was quite a bit of dust on his sneakers.
"Your shoes are dirty," I reminded him.
"It's fine," Liu Ziqiang laughed heartily, "I was just playing basketball with a few classmates, getting some exercise."
"I didn't know Teacher Liu could play basketball. That's impressive."
I'm only just over thirty now, and my stamina is nowhere near what it was in my early twenties.
Wu Xiaowen, standing to the side, chimed in with a smile as I complimented Liu Ziqiang, "Not only that, Teacher Liu practiced acrobatics when he was younger!"
"That's really impressive!" I added, going along with the conversation.
Liu Ziqiang waved his hand while laughing, "Let's not talk about that. We should discuss the Fang Jia case. Haven't they found the murderer yet? It's truly tragic! Just two days ago everything was fine..."
"Yes..." Wu Xiaowen interjected, "Teacher Liu, do you remember? That day Fang Jia said she wanted to show us the animals she photographed at Sen Liu Park with Zhang Jian! I remember she rushed over to tell you all about the many sika deer she captured on camera as soon as you walked into the office! Right?"
"That's right. Such a lovely and beautiful girl; it's just heartbreaking."
Liu Ziqiang supported his forehead with his hand, revealing a sorrowful expression.
