Li Jianxin, carrying the groceries he had just bought, hummed a tuneless little song as he cheerfully made his way to Room 202 in Unit 2 of Building F. 0

The thought of taking Ruo Lin on a train trip to Inner Mongolia the next day filled him with excitement for the upcoming adventure, and his mood was particularly good. He even broke from his usual reserved demeanor to greet the Old Gatekeeper with unexpected enthusiasm. 0

This action left the Old Gatekeeper wide-eyed and mouth agape, unable to close it for quite some time. 0

Dragging his slightly sluggish right leg, Li Jianxin ascended the stairs slowly, each step imbued with the joy of embarking on a new chapter in his life. 0

Finally, he stopped in front of the door to Room 202. Just as he was about to take out his key to unlock it, he noticed a crack in the door. 0

The door isn’t locked?! 0

His heart raced as a flurry of terrifying thoughts rushed through his mind. But remembering that Ruo Lin was still inside, he gritted his teeth, summoned his courage, and slowly pulled open the security door. 0

Before him lay an eerily empty hall, quiet to the point of being unsettling. 0

Perhaps I forgot to lock the door? 0

Li Jianxin cautiously stepped inside, his eyes alertly scanning the surroundings. 0

The furnishings in the room were just as he had left them, unchanged in the slightest. The sunlight streamed through the curtains, casting dappled shadows on the floor, creating an illusion of midsummer warmth. 0

So it really was me who forgot. 0

Just as Li Jianxin was about to place the vegetables in the kitchen, a crisp sound of a door closing suddenly echoed. Immediately after, a slightly amused male voice came from behind, "Are you Li Jianxin?" 0

Li Jianxin turned around in terror, only to see a man as stout as a small mountain blocking the security door with his massive frame. The man looked at him with a playful expression, his gaze reminiscent of someone sizing up a lamb ready for slaughter. 0

"Who are you?" Li Jianxin questioned, trying to sound fierce despite his voice trembling slightly, desperately attempting to mask his inner fear. 0

"You should know," the man replied leisurely, a hint of mockery in his tone. 0

"Did that old bastard send you?" Li Jianxin shouted angrily, fire burning in his eyes. 0

"I only know he paid me to get that painting back, no matter the consequences." 0

The man responded coldly, his eyes betraying a glimmer of greed. 0

"You can forget it!" 0

Li Jianxin clenched his fists and shouted defiantly. 0

"If you don’t want your left leg to end up like your right one, you better hand over the painting," the man threatened, a sinister smile spreading across his face. 0

"Were you the one who hit me with your car last time?" Li Jianxin asked through gritted teeth, fury etched on his face. 0

The man smiled and shrugged, as if to acknowledge the accusation. 0

"Can't find where the painting is, can you?" Li Jianxin suddenly asked, a glint of cunning in his eyes. 0

The man replied, "It's just a matter of time. I actually wanted to find the painting and leave before you got back, which would have saved me a lot of trouble. Unfortunately, you returned just in time." 0

"Is that so..." Li Jianxin said seemingly casually, but before he finished speaking, his gaze suddenly turned resolute. He spun around sharply, not charging at the man but instead darting in the opposite direction toward the kitchen. 0

The man watched in surprise as Li Jianxin rushed into the kitchen like a madman. Moments later, he emerged wielding a kitchen knife with fierce determination. The man did not stop him; instead, he looked at the trembling figure of Li Jianxin with disdain and scoffed, "Do you really think your frail strength can kill me?" 0

Li Jianxin seemed completely enraged by this remark, resembling an agitated beast as he let out a low growl and charged recklessly at the man with the knife. 0

In an instant, the room was filled with scattered items as the two grappled fiercely. 0

The man leaned against the wall, panting heavily, his eyes wide with fear and regret. 0

At his feet lay Li Jianxin's body, still warm to the touch. Aside from the bloodied knife embedded in his chest, he looked as if he were merely asleep. Yet those tightly shut eyes and pale face told a different story—one of life extinguished. 0

The man felt a surge of panic; he had never truly believed he would kill someone. 0

He had dismissed Li Jianxin's resistance as inconsequential, but Li Jianxin was far from the fragile figure he appeared to be. In the heat of their struggle, it was just one misstep that led to the knife plunging mercilessly into Li Jianxin's chest. When he finally released his grip in a panic, it was too late; the other had already become a lifeless corpse. 0
