Hu Xiuying felt a wave of comfort wash over her, but suddenly she sensed a warmth in her lower body and realized that he had finished. A wave of disappointment surged within her; after all, it had been more than half a year since she had been with her husband. Today, being with two men had ignited something inside her, yet neither of them could truly satisfy her, leaving her feeling somewhat let down. At that moment, clarity returned to her mind, and she quickly pushed his body away. Blushing deeply, she got up and put on her clothes, turning to Zhang Guilong, who was still on the bed, saying, “I’m leaving now. You better remember what you said.”
Zhang Guilong, having just finished and feeling weak, hurriedly replied, “Yeah, don’t worry about it. But you have to promise me one thing.”
Hu Xiuying was startled and quickly asked, “What condition?”
Zhang Guilong’s face turned red. “It’s nothing much... just...”
“Just what?” Hu Xiuying pressed.
“I mean, I’ve been single for so long without any women in my life. I’m just a normal man; sometimes I need a woman too. Since we’ve already... well, I was hoping you could give me your underwear. If we can’t be together in the future, at least I can have that as a keepsake. Is that okay?” Zhang Guilong blurted out in one breath.
Hu Xiuying was taken aback and couldn’t help but laugh and cry at the same time. After thinking for a moment, she realized he was quite pitiful—over thirty and still without a wife. Since they had already been intimate, giving him something didn’t seem like much. She lifted her skirt slightly and reached down to take off her underwear, handing it to him with a roll of her eyes. “You better behave yourself and find a wife soon.”
“Yeah, yeah, I know,” Zhang Guilong replied eagerly as he took the underwear and kissed it like it was a treasure.
Seeing his reaction made Hu Xiuying blush even more as she left his home.
By the time Hu Xiuying returned home, it was already past five o’clock. She found her family gathered around the dinner table. She sat down quietly as her daughter Xiao Cai hurriedly brought her a bowl of food. Without saying a word, she began to eat while feeling guilty about betraying her husband and children. But then she thought to herself that she was doing this for the sake of the family; there was no other choice.
Li Kehu quickly served her a piece of meat into her bowl. “Xiuying, you look tired; eat more.”
Hu Xiuying smiled and said to Xiao Zhi, “Here, let you have some,” as she picked up some meat from her bowl and placed it into her younger son’s.
Xiao Zhi was still young and didn’t quite understand everything; he happily exclaimed while eating the meat his mother gave him, “It’s so delicious! Mommy is so nice!”
Hu Xiuying smiled back at him. “Make sure you study hard after eating. When you grow up, you need to be good to Mommy.”
“Hmm, hmm,” Xiao Zhi quickly responded.
“Mom, we will always be good to you. You raised us so well; how could we ever treat you poorly?” Xiaogang said.
Seeing her children speak like this, Hu Xiuying smiled happily, thinking that all her hardships were worth it. The next day, after having breakfast, Hu Xiuying rode her bicycle to work. Upon entering the factory, she saw Hu Zai greeting her: “Sister, you’re here.”
As soon as Hu Xiuying saw him, she realized he already knew about her meeting with the Factory Director from yesterday, and her cheeks flushed slightly. “Hu Zai, why do you always arrive earlier than me?”
Hu Zai laughed and replied, “Of course! Your commute is longer than mine, so I naturally get here before you.”
While arranging some low boxes, Hu Xiuying thought to herself: Yesterday I earned 1,300 in just one go. My monthly salary is only 1,500. If I rely solely on that salary, it’s far from enough for a big family’s expenses. Besides, there are debts at home that need to be settled; relying on this 1,500 won’t clear what I owe others. As long as no one finds out, I might as well... The more she thought about it, the more heated her thoughts became, causing her face to flush.
By now, Hu Zai and Hu Xiuying had no secrets between them. He then said, “Sister, last night I went out to have some fun and a woman around your age asked me to sleep with her.”
Hu Xiuying was taken aback and quickly asked with a laugh, “What happened next?” She often joked with him and was used to their playful banter.
“Of course we did! I even gave her 50 bucks. That woman was really bold, but she wasn’t as pretty as you,” Hu Zai chuckled.
Hu Xiuying was shocked: “You’re still a kid! How could you do something like that? Don’t ever do it again; it’s not easy for someone your age to be out here.”
“But Sister,” Hu Zai blushed and said, “Whenever I see a woman, I just think of those things. I don’t know why; I can’t help it.”
Having been through similar experiences herself, Hu Xiuying understood that this was part of adolescence. She realized that Hu Zai was at that age and couldn’t blame him too much. However, she thought about her own sons and hoped they wouldn’t turn out like Hu Zai. If they secretly went out to chase women like he did, she would definitely not let them off easily.
At that moment, Hu Zai mysteriously smiled and asked her: “Sister, did you also…”
Hu Xiuying's face flushed, and she hurriedly whispered, "Don't say such things."
"I know, that old man, the Factory Director, is over sixty and still acting like this," Hu Zai said angrily.
"Hu Zai, do you look down on me?" Hu Xiuying asked.
"Of course not! Big Sister, you’re still my big sister. How could I ever look down on you?" Hu Zai quickly replied.
"You’re right. I really have no way out... sigh," Hu Xiuying sighed.
At noon, the Factory Director entered their binding workshop. Upon seeing Hu Xiuying, he said to her, "Come out for a moment; I need to talk to you."
Hearing this, Xiuying quickly followed him outside. "What is it, Factory Director?"
The Factory Director lowered his voice and said, "Xiuying, I have a client coming for business at noon. I need to invite him to dinner; can you come along to accompany him?"
"No way! I'm not a hostess, and besides, I can't drink. You should find someone else," Hu Xiuying firmly replied.
The Factory Director grew anxious upon hearing this. "You don’t understand! That client saw you last time he visited the factory. He insists that I bring you along to drink with him; otherwise, he won’t give me any business!"
"I'm not going. I'm going back to work," Hu Xiuying said as she turned to walk back into the workshop.
"Just accompany him for 500 yuan," the Factory Director quickly added, knowing she was short on money.
Upon hearing the amount, Hu Xiuying's steps unconsciously halted. She thought to herself: 500 for just one evening? Besides, she had already been involved with both the Factory Director and Zhang Guilong before; doing it once more wouldn’t hurt. Her face flushed again as she asked, "Is that really true?"
Fearing she would change her mind and cause trouble, the Factory Director hurriedly took out 500 yuan and handed it to her. "Here you go. Now you can rest easy."
Hu Xiuying pondered for a moment, then made up her mind and reached out to take the money, only to see the Factory Director snatch it back. "But if you take my money, you have to make that client comfortable and happy, you understand?"
Upon hearing this, Hu Xiuying blushed and replied softly, "I know, but at my age, will he even like me?"
"Don't worry about that; he specifically requested you," the Factory Director assured her.
"Alright then, just call me when it's noon," Hu Xiuying said as she accepted the money and returned to the workshop.
The Factory Director walked away happily.
Glancing at the clock, Hu Xiuying noticed it was still only a little past nine—plenty of time—so she began her work.
"Hey, sis, what did that old guy want? It must not be anything good," Hu Zai asked her eagerly.
"It's nothing; don't think too much about it," Hu Xiuying quickly replied.
"Well, as long as it's nothing. I'm just worried about you," Hu Zai said with a look of concern.
"Thank you, Hu Zai," Hu Xiuying smiled.
Hu Zai fell silent and got back to work.
As Hu Xiuying worked, her thoughts drifted; she would have to accompany that client at noon. She wondered what kind of person he was and how old he might be. If only he were younger; that would be so much better. If he could satisfy her needs, that would be even more wonderful. After all that had happened yesterday, she had trouble sleeping last night. As she thought about it, she felt her face grow warm and a strange sensation stirring within her. Why was she thinking about such things? She questioned herself. But no matter how hard she tried to push the thoughts away, they kept creeping back in uncontrollably.
