Xiao Ying inhaled sharply, her hand gently pressing against Xi Yue's as she quickly scanned their surroundings. Noticing that no one was paying attention to them, she lowered her voice and cautiously said, "It's not safe to talk here. Let's go to the Detective Agency."
Xi Yue nodded vigorously, and the two swiftly changed out of their martial arts uniforms before leaving the Dojo together.
"You said you witnessed a murder? What exactly happened?"
Xiao Ying retrieved a bottle of mineral water from the fridge and handed it to Xi Yue, then slowly sank into the sofa herself.
"I know you might not believe me when I say this, but I really saw it. That man strangled a woman."
Xi Yue clutched the water bottle tightly, still shaken by the memory of last night. Her voice trembled slightly as she spoke.
Xiao Ying comfortingly patted her hand and softly encouraged, "Don't be afraid. Take your time; I'm here with you."
"Across from my house, in that building," Xi Yue began, "I couldn't sleep last night before the rain started. Suddenly, I saw a light turn on in the window across from me. There was a man with his back to me, and he was viciously strangling a woman."
"And then?"
"Then the light went out." Xi Yue took a large gulp of water and glanced at Xiao Ying, who seemed deep in thought. She quickly added, "It was only for a few seconds, but I swear I didn't missee anything!"
Xiao Ying smiled slightly and playfully winked at her. "Do you think I would doubt your words?" With that, she stood up. "Let's go."
"Where to?" Xi Yue asked, confusion etched on her face as she looked up at Xiao Ying.
"Let's take a walk in your yard."
"Shouldn't we notify the police?" Xi Yue asked, her neck shrinking slightly as doubt flickered in her eyes.
"They're busy enough as it is. For something that hasn't even happened yet, let's not trouble them. Don't forget, I'm unbeatable in the Dojo," uncle Zhao replied confidently.
With that, Xiao Ying struck a bold pose and exchanged a smile with Xi Yue before grabbing her hand and striding out.
Standing in the scorching afternoon sun, Xiao Ying and Xi Yue squinted against the brightness. The sun blazed down on them, forcing them to raise their hands to shield their eyes as they looked up at the tall buildings before them.
The grayish-white building appeared to have been constructed only a few years ago, yet it already bore an air of age.
"Are you sure this is the place?" Xiao Ying asked after seeing Xi Yue nod vigorously. "Which one?"
Xi Yue pointed towards one of the windows. "The sixth floor, it's right there."
"Alright, let's go take a look."
Xiao Ying led Xi Yue to the elevator, and they rode up to the sixth floor, carefully checking the door numbers and judging their target based on the window's orientation.
The motion-sensor lights in the hallway flickered on and off, casting shadows over their young faces that were tinged with nervousness.
Feeling anxious, Xi Yue instinctively tugged at Xiao Ying's shirt. Xiao Ying turned back and offered her a reassuring smile.
“Is this really okay for us?” Xi Yue asked softly.
“Don’t worry, I’m here,” Xiao Ying replied, feeling her way to the door of room 605. She pointed at the doorplate and whispered, “This should be the one.”
Xi Yue opened her mouth, about to say something more, when a sound of footsteps echoed from around the corner of the staircase.
Both of them froze for a moment. Xiao Ying quickly shot a glance at Xi Yue, and they instinctively darted into a dark corner where the light didn’t reach, peeking out cautiously.
Two figures appeared in the hallway, and under the dim yellow light, Xiao Ying and Xi Yue exchanged surprised looks before stepping out from their hiding place together.
The newcomers turned at the sound and were equally taken aback.
“What are you two doing here?”
Wei Jiawei’s eyes widened in disbelief as he stared at the two girls who seemed to have appeared out of nowhere, almost unable to resist rubbing his eyes to make sure he wasn’t imagining things.
“What a coincidence.”
Xiao Ying greeted him with a bright smile and then glanced past Wei Jiawei to warmly wave at Zhao Police Chief behind him. “Hello, Officer Zhao!”
Officer Zhao looked from Xiao Ying to Xi Yue, who stood quietly with her head down like a guilty child caught in the act. It was clear he hadn’t expected to run into them here either.
