“Jiu Jiu, you…” Song Mingyu looked at me in disbelief, his eyes red, teeth clenched, his face filled with pain and anger.
I had never seen him like this before. Due to his illness, my father had always forbidden him from getting angry. But I was disobedient, always provoking him, causing his health to remain frail even now.
“Don’t say such things. I won’t let anything happen to you.” His tone was unyielding, as solid as a rock.
Unable to help myself, I reached out and gently caressed his sharply defined cheek, a wave of regret washing over me. How had I not realized until now just how important Song Mingyu was to me? Was it too late?
The surrounding demons were dumbfounded. A tiny Squirrel Demon, grinning with its comically large front teeth, asked foolishly, “Why are they all fighting to let us eat them? Have they lost their minds?”
His mother patted his head gently and said, “Child, this is what humans call love! It can make a person’s intelligence drop to zero; you’ll understand when you grow up.”
So, until the king of the Fairy Cave arrived, Song Mingyu and I were still nestled together, softly comforting each other.
The little demons covered their ears, looking as if they couldn’t stand it any longer. They collectively complained to the king about our “shameful behavior”: “Your Majesty, let’s hurry up and eat them!”
The king was an Ox Spirit, clad in a bright red cloak, striding towards us with an imposing presence. But suddenly, he gasped and took a large step back, shouting at the top of his lungs, “Oh no! Quickly release them! Let them go!”
The little demons looked puzzled; they had worked hard to capture us.
The king quickly explained, “He is the Immortal Lord of Bright Cosmos; he is a deity from the upper realm and cannot be offended!”
“Then we can’t eat him either?” The little demons’ eyes were fixed on me, the so-called “glutton.”
The king waved his hands repeatedly, stomping his feet in frustration. "You fool, she can't eat that! Are you trying to cause a stomach rupture and die with blood pouring from your seven orifices?"
Am I really that cruel? I glanced at myself in disdain, and before I could ask for more details, I was escorted out of the Fairy Cave alongside Song Mingyu. As we left, the creatures even gifted us some delicious dried meat and candied fruit.
This trip was indeed "worth it"!
The closer we got to Qian Deng Town, the more stories began to surface. I would have preferred to return to Chang'an with Song Mingyu, where he could be his noble self while I continued my reckless life as Zhu Jiu Jiu. At the very least, Song Mingyu would still be by my side.
What I feared most… was that this journey would lead us to a point of no return.
"Can we not go to Qian Deng Town?" I took a deep breath and mustered my courage to ask.
Song Mingyu turned back, frowning in confusion as he looked at me. "Why?"
I was afraid that the mistress of Qian Deng Town might have deep connections with Song Mingyu. If that were the case, our brief twenty-year friendship could be shattered in an instant.
"I'm afraid that when you see her, you'll forget our promise."
I felt a lump in my throat; it wasn't that I lacked confidence, but this unease constantly invaded my heart.
He smiled and playfully tapped my nose, his gesture affectionate and his eyes filled with tenderness. "Don't you understand my intentions? Going to Qian Deng Town is just to help you heal. Why are you being so foolish?"
Yes, Song Mingyu wasn't that kind of person. There were countless beauties in Chang'an, yet I had never seen him show any interest.
I calmed my emotions and took hold of Song Mingyu's large hand, feeling the warmth of his palm, as if this alone could dispel all the unease in my heart.
