Time seemed to stretch endlessly until the world finally fell silent, the chilling screeches that had haunted me completely vanished.
I attempted to move my stiff limbs; aside from some soreness, I seemed to have escaped any serious injuries.
Letting out a long sigh, I took deep breaths of the cold air, trying to calm my racing heart.
Curled up, I buried my face deep in my knees, tears streaming down uncontrollably.
Memories of my time with Yang Mengfan flooded my mind like an old film, flickering frame by frame.
I recalled the first time I met him; he flashed a wide smile, revealing a set of pearly white teeth, and greeted me with warmth.
He was always so optimistic and cheerful, as if nothing could trouble him.
Even in the most dangerous moments, he could diffuse the tension with his humor, always standing in front of me as a shield.
But now, he had left this world forever to save me.
The thought pierced my heart like a sharp knife, leaving me gasping in pain.
I lifted my head and looked around in confusion.
I found myself in a massive snow pit, surrounded by steep Ice Walls that were as smooth as glass, impossible to climb.
The entrance was at least ten meters above me, like a door to heaven—yet so far out of reach.
I tried to stand up, but my legs felt as heavy as lead.
Taking a deep breath, I mustered my courage and took a few steps toward the Ice Wall, then tentatively began to climb.
However, the Ice Wall was far too smooth; my hands and feet couldn't find any footholds.
I struggled several times, but each attempt ended in failure as I slid back down to the bottom again and again.
Exhausted, I slumped onto the snow, despair creeping in. Was I really going to be trapped in this cursed place?
Just when I was about to give up hope, a clear woman's voice suddenly echoed from the cave entrance. "Are you okay?"
This voice struck like lightning, piercing through the darkness of despair.
I shot my head up, my heart pounding violently in my chest, almost breaking through my ribs.
Following the direction of the voice, a beam of light appeared in my vision like a lifeline.
At the cave entrance, a flickering light stood out against the thick darkness, remarkably vivid.
In that light, a shadowy figure emerged, indistinct and hard to make out clearly.
I blinked hard, trying to see better, but my eyes were so sore that all I could make out was a vague outline.
"I... I'm fine,"
I shouted with all my might, my voice hoarse like a broken wind instrument.
"Who are you?"
My voice echoed in the vast cave, trembling with fear and a hint of relief from surviving.
The faint light vanished, plunging the entrance back into darkness, and my heart sank along with it.
Could it be that everything just now was merely an illusion? Was I destined to be trapped in this pitch-black place forever?
That clear female voice came again from the cave entrance.
"Don't worry about that for now; I'm pulling you up."
"Is the climbing rope secured? Can you pull yourself up using it?"
Before I could respond, a thick climbing rope dropped down from the entrance, landing right in front of me.
I grabbed the climbing rope and tugged on it twice, wrapping it tightly around my hand, transferring my entire weight onto it.
Without thinking too much, I took a deep breath and began to climb upward.
With the rope supporting me, I moved upward bit by bit. Though my body ached and felt weak, the desire to survive fueled me with boundless strength.
Finally, my head emerged from the hole, and I saw the outside world.
A hand reached out and firmly grasped my arm, pulling me out of the opening.
I looked up to see a tall, beautiful woman before me.
She was dressed in a black mountaineering outfit, wearing a black windproof hat that shaded her bright eyes, which were filled with concern as she looked at me.
Is this... Wang Yao? One of my companions on this climb? But she had said she was feeling unwell before we set off; wasn't she supposed to stay in the village at the foot of the mountain? How could it be her?
"Are you okay?"
She asked, her voice laced with worry.
I shook my head, wanting to say something, but found my throat dry and could not utter a word.
"Don't speak for now; just rest."
She helped me sit down on the ground and then took out a thermos from her backpack, handing it to me.
I accepted the water and sipped it slowly.
"Thank you, thank you for saving me."
I finally found my voice.
She smiled slightly and said, "No need to be polite, it was just a small effort."
"By the way, how did you end up here? I thought you weren't coming up the mountain with everyone."
Wang Yao slapped her forehead as if she had just remembered something.
"I arrived around noon, but I didn't see you. I only saw your boyfriend."
"Thanks to the village elder's home remedy! To be honest, I just had a bit of diarrhea, and after taking the medicine they gave me, I felt better in less than an hour."
"Then I thought, since I had already paid, I might as well stick to the original plan and catch up with you all."
Wang Yao squatted in front of me, one hand gently resting on my back.
I frowned deeply.
"Did you... see that monster?"
"What monster? I didn't see anything."
