Su Mingxian shook her head helplessly, comforting her for quite a while, thinking that the matter would pass. Unexpectedly, the girl remained silent and turned out to be quite determined.
After returning home, she immediately took out her new hair tie and put it on her head, insisting on sitting in the living room to wait for her father, resolutely refusing to sleep.
Seeing her like this, Yang Yang followed suit, causing Su Mingxian to feel overwhelmed.
When Shen Chi returned in the middle of the night, he found Su Mingxian tiredly placing their son onto the bed.
"What happened?" he asked.
Su Mingxian's eyes were slightly red. "It's nothing."
She couldn't very well say that the child was looking for his father. If she did, would they still be getting a divorce?
Shen Chi placed a black cloth bag on the table and walked over with long strides. "Let me hold him; you take a break."
He then picked their daughter up and placed her on the bed. At that moment, Qian Qian sleepily opened her eyes. "Daddy, you’re finally back! I’ve been waiting for you for so long! I have so much to tell you, but I'm so sleepy."
Shen Chi's heart softened instantly as he gently patted her head. "Then sleep first; you can tell Daddy tomorrow."
The little girl eventually fell asleep, while Su Mingxian sat in the chair and began to wipe away her tears.
When Shen Chi approached, Su Mingxian quickly dried her tears and lowered her head, speaking hoarsely. "Why did you come back so late? Have you eaten? I—"
Just as she was about to get up to go to the kitchen, Shen Chi grabbed her wrist.
Su Mingxian suddenly looked up and was met by the deep, dark gaze of Shen Chi, her heart racing as if it might leap from her chest.
Shen Chi stared at her intently, his grip tightening. Noticing this, Su Mingxian quickly withdrew her hand. "There are some leftovers in the kitchen; I'll heat them up for you. It won't take long."
Shen Chi's hand lingered in the air, as if still holding onto the warmth she had left behind.
Unconsciously, he fiddled with his fingers and turned to glance at the busy figure in the kitchen. There was something comforting about the feeling of waiting for someone.
He habitually pulled out a cigarette and placed it between his lips.
"Don't smoke in the room; secondhand smoke is bad for the children," Su Mingxian said.
Shen Chi paused, hesitating for a moment before silently putting it away. Before long, the aroma of food accompanied by her gentle presence appeared before him.
Shen Chi picked up his chopsticks and said, "Put that away."
"What?" Su Mingxian blinked, turning to look at the black cloth bag on the table.
When she opened it, her eyes widened in surprise. "What is this?"
Shen Chi's gaze flickered slightly as he casually continued to serve himself. "Aren't you planning to buy a house? Take it."
Su Mingxian stared at him in disbelief, speechless.
After a long moment, Shen Chi looked up and asked, "What's wrong? Is it not enough?"
"Not really," Su Mingxian frowned and then looked at him, saying, "I appreciate your kindness, but buying a house is my own business."
Shen Chi's hand, which was picking up food, suddenly froze. His voice was cold as he replied, "Buying a house is a man's responsibility."
"But we're about to get a divorce," Su Mingxian said. As soon as she finished speaking, Shen Chi slammed his chopsticks onto the table and looked at her with an icy expression.
Su Mingxian was taken aback by his gaze. Before she could respond, Shen Chi picked up his chopsticks again and continued to serve himself, saying, "Just take it; there's no need for so many words."
Su Mingxian: ...
Seriously, does he have to be so arrogant?
But facing Shen Chi's cold eyes, Su Mingxian swallowed the words that were about to come out.
He is the father of the child; it seems only natural for him to buy a house for the kids, right?
After coming to this realization, she looked at him gently and said, "Well then, thank you on behalf of the children."
With that, she smiled at him and began counting the money.
