She had never heard Wu Rong speak in such a tone, not even when they had sat together for a long time in front of and behind each other, during the times they were most familiar. Now, Wu Rong was speaking to her this way for Rao Jie. Although it made her heart ache, she ultimately felt a sense of relief, as if she had let go of something, and was about to agree.
Suddenly, Rao Jie spoke up, "I'm sorry. I initially wanted to work at a bank, but now I've realized that I’m more suited to being a Pastry Chef. That’s what I truly want to do. So after graduation, I think I’ll go directly to study pastry making. I won’t be going to the bank anymore."
After leaving the gathering, the two walked in silence. As they walked, Rao Jie suddenly grabbed Wu Rong's hand and started running, sprinting all the way to the leisure path in front of the mall. The path had railings, and beyond them was a wide river with beautiful night scenery.
Rao Jie released Wu Rong and leaned against the railing, bursting into laughter as if she wanted to laugh out all the negativity inside her. Tears streamed down her face from laughing so hard. Fortunately, there weren’t many people around; otherwise, others would surely think she was crazy.
Wu Rong stood behind Rao Jie, watching her with deep and focused eyes. When Rao Jie finally stopped laughing, Wu Rong spoke up, "Have you decided?"
Rao Jie turned around, her smile dazzlingly bright. "Yes, I’ve decided!"
Once she made her decision, it felt as if her heart had taken flight. She had never felt such joy and excitement before; it was as if she had entered a whole new world, no longer shackled by the burdens of her past.
Rao Jie had once been determined to pursue graduate studies and secure a respectable job at a bank. Part of that desire stemmed from wanting her parents to respect her and not just see her brother as the only successful one who could support them in their old age—she could do it too.
Moreover, there was her grandmother’s influence; the elderly woman believed that being a chef was not a worthy pursuit and that education was the key to success. A college degree was impressive, but a graduate degree was even more prestigious—working at a bank would be the pinnacle of achievement.
Thus, Rao Jie’s beliefs were deeply rooted in her grandmother's views since childhood. However, when her grandmother fell ill and had little time left, she began to advise Rao Jie to live happily without worrying too much. The most important thing in life is happiness; if one didn’t want to study or go to school, that was perfectly fine—being happy was what mattered most.
Of course, at that time, her grandmother also recognized their parents' favoritism and hoped that the granddaughter she raised could live freely and happily without being bound by parental expectations.
Rao Jie always thought that if she hadn’t met Wu Rong in this life, she would have undoubtedly followed the first path and believed it was the only one for her. But meeting Wu Rong changed everything; her world became different. Her horizons broadened; she began to think for herself and no longer went with the flow.
Seeing Rao Jie’s sense of relief made Wu Rong smile as he said, "Don’t worry; even if the road ahead is long and fraught with danger—if you hit your head and end up with nothing—you still have me!"
Even though Rao Jie was overjoyed, hearing this made her expression complex. Seeing him about to speak again and fearing he might hurt her fragile heart further, she directly jumped up and hugged Wu Rong tightly, kissing him to silence his words.
Rao Jie took the initiative to kiss, and Wu Rong naturally wouldn't let the opportunity slip by, deepening the kiss.
It wasn't until Rao Jie’s excitement faded that she felt it was inappropriate to continue in public, so she pushed Wu Rong away.
Wu Rong held Rao Jie close and said in a husky voice, “Let’s hurry back.”
