Rao Jie let out a rare hum in acknowledgment.
While waiting for the designated driver, the two of them stood closely together on the side of the road. Behind them, people were gradually returning home from the shopping mall. Not far away, a group of young men and women emerged.
"Jian Ge, didn't you say you were going to be promoted to department manager soon? Why hasn't it happened yet? I'm still waiting for you to buy me that handbag!" A woman, dressed more revealingly than one would expect for spring, leaned against a man as if she could hardly walk, pressing herself against him as they moved forward.
Nearby, another man mocked, "Weren't you saying Young Master Hu was going to be your brother-in-law? Sounds like you're just bragging. How could your family possibly connect with someone like that?"
"Shut up! Do I look like someone who would lie? My sister hasn't graduated yet; once she does, she'll marry him. What's the rush?"
"You really are something. Young Master Hu is notorious for being a player. How could your family let your sister marry him? Is she even your real sister?"
"That's nonsense! She's my Biological Sister, alright? And while Young Master Hu might mess around with women, my sister is someone he wants to marry seriously—a top student! How could he treat her poorly? This is a huge blessing for her; others would line up for it."
"Keep dreaming! What do you think this is, the old days where parents arranged marriages? You think she can just be married off without her own say?"
"This concerns my future and our family's happiness! Even if my sister doesn't agree, she'll have to!" Rao Jian asserted firmly.
Just then, he noticed a familiar sight not far ahead—two people leaning against each other. When one of the women turned to speak, Rao Jian was taken aback; it was Rao Jie.
He hadn't seen her in ages; she hadn't returned home for the New Year, ignored his calls, and even blocked him on WeChat. To encounter her here was unexpected.
As he prepared to confront her, he saw the man beside Rao Jie lean down and kiss her cheek. Rao Jian froze in shock. Upon closer inspection, it became clear that their behavior was intimate and suggestive of an inappropriate relationship.
He knew his sister had just broken up with her boyfriend; now she was with someone else. But wait—this guy's attire clearly marked him as part of the social scene.
Rao Jian's mind raced with assumptions. He had never met Wu Rong and naively assumed he was just another socialite. Given that his sister had been away from home for so long yet seemed to have money to spend, it struck Rao Jian as utterly bizarre. He immediately thought of the worst: his sister had been taken care of by someone else.
In his view, many female college students ended up in such situations. His sister was lacking money and housing—wasn't she precisely the type most likely to be supported by someone else?
Rao Jian felt a surge of righteous indignation and schadenfreude, wanting to say something about his sister. However, the two individuals got into the car, and Rao Jian couldn't catch up, left only to watch them drive away helplessly.
As he regained his composure, he suddenly found Rao Jie incredibly detestable. If she was being kept, why not marry Young Master Hu? The only explanation was that his sister was unwilling to help him. Even in a situation that could benefit them both, she refused to see him succeed. She was nothing short of a heartless woman.
