“Dad, I…” Rao Jie wanted to clarify a bit more.
However, Rao Gang was unusually firm, not giving Rao Jie a chance to speak, as if he was unwilling to say anything further. He kept insisting that she come home immediately.
In the end, Rao Jie had no choice but to agree, promising to head home right away.
After hanging up the phone, she felt Wu Rong gently biting her hand.
Rao Jie quickly pulled her hand away, and Wu Rong sat up, wrapping her arms around Rao Jie and asking, “What’s wrong? You look strange. Why did your dad call?”
Rao Jie shook her head. “I’m not sure. It seems like it’s something urgent. I need to get up and go back for a bit.”
Wu Rong got up as well and said, “I’ll take you. I can also pay a visit to your parents.”
Rao Jie immediately tensed up and turned to Wu Rong. “What did you just say? Meet my parents?”
Wu Rong nodded. “Isn’t that how it should be? I should formally meet your parents first, then take you to meet mine, and finally have both families come together to discuss…”
“Wait a minute… are you suggesting…” It sounded like a proposal was in the works.
Rao Jie stumbled over her words for a moment before saying, “I haven’t officially told my parents that we’re dating yet. Let me talk to them about it first before we discuss meeting up. It wouldn’t be appropriate for me to suddenly bring you home!”
Although Wu Rong felt there was no need for such complications—he could just go meet them and tell them that Rao Jie was his from now on, that he would take care of her for life, completing some ceremonial handover—he didn’t particularly care for Rao Jie’s parents.
So he decided to heed her wishes in this regard to avoid making her unhappy.
“Alright, I’ll follow your lead. But since you had such an unpleasant argument with your mom before, I’m worried you might get bullied if you go back alone. So I’ll drive you to the door and wait outside for your news.”
Rao Jie couldn’t help but smile slightly; a small sense of happiness began to accumulate within her.
“Don’t be ridiculous! You still have classes today. It’s fine; even if our relationship is strained, they’re still my family. They won’t do anything too harsh; at most, it’ll just be a loud argument. Besides, I’m officially dating you now, so they can’t force me into blind dates anymore.”
Rao Jie believed that no matter how unreasonable her mother and older brother might be, they couldn’t truly force her into anything. The worst she would face was some frustration, but in the end, they were still family; she would just have to endure it.
Moreover, with Wu Rong by her side now, she felt that as long as she had this man behind her, she wouldn’t be afraid of anything.
Wu Rong’s words also reminded Rao Jie that if they were really going to take the next step in their relationship, meeting the parents was an essential process. Therefore, her relationship with her mother and brother couldn’t remain so tense forever.
She wanted to formally introduce Wu Rong to her family; regardless of whether they were willing or not, she needed to say something about it.
There were also plans for her future that needed to be communicated to her family. So, returning home was inevitable.
Once they had everything packed, Wu Rong drove Rao Jie back home. On the way, Rao Jie couldn't help but discuss future matters with Wu Rong. Some decisions seemed monumental at first, but once they were made, they became surprisingly easy.
As Wu Rong drove, he listened to Rao Jie's analysis and musings, a smile gradually forming on his lips.
