Rao Jie had not yet had the chance to call out "Mom!" when Huang Xiang stood at the door and slapped down hard. Rao Jie instinctively dodged, feeling a sharp pain in her ear, followed by a heavy slap on her shoulder.
Dazed, she still hadn't grasped what was happening when Rao Gang appeared, stepping forward to grab Huang Xiang's shoulder. "How can you stand at the door and hit the child? What if someone sees us? Do we want to lose face?"
Rao Jie was shocked, covering her ear, which throbbed painfully. She didn’t even pay attention to her shoulder. When she touched it and looked at her hand, she realized it was bleeding. It seemed she had been cut.
Anger surged within her, but she hadn’t even opened her mouth to speak. Rao Gang, as if afraid of being seen by others, quickly pulled Rao Jie inside and shut the door. Only then did he notice that the ear she was holding was bleeding.
Rao Gang was taken aback and immediately shouted at Huang Xiang, "How many times have I told you? Do you have any idea how heavy your hands are? You vent your anger on her like this—do you know how much damage you can do? Look, she's bleeding! Hurry up and get the first aid kit!"
Huang Xiang glared fiercely, neck stiffened, eyes wide with rage as she pointed a finger at Rao Jie and began to scold her. "How could I give birth to such a shameless daughter who does something so disgraceful? If the neighbors find out about this, what face do we have left? We raised you to go to college for you to do this? Are you trying to drown your parents in spit?"
"So what if she's bleeding? I might as well beat you to death! I gave birth to you, and if I didn’t raise you well, I might as well shove you back inside me!"
"Are you doing this just to get back at us? Do you think it’s satisfying to oppose us? You deliberately want to anger us, right? Not taking a single cent from home, unable to live on your own, unwilling to come home with your head down—I thought you had the guts to live independently out there. Turns out you're just doing this! Where’s your sense of shame?"
As Huang Xiang shouted, looking ready to lash out again, Rao Gang quickly intervened. "We agreed that we would bring our daughter back and talk things over calmly. You can't just hit and scold her; how can she listen like that? Can't you be a little more composed?"
"I used to hold back too much when I should have been stricter; that's why she's turned out this way. Get out of my way! Today I'm going to beat that rebellious spirit out of her!"
Rao Jie stood aside in shock, covering her ear as she watched her parents. Completely oblivious to what was happening, she felt as if she were watching a performance. Even though Huang Xiang hurled insults at her with venomous words, it didn’t affect her much; she was merely startled.
Huang Xiang had never been particularly gentle with her before, but she had never been this furious either—she seemed like a raging beast. Even when Rao Jie firmly rejected the blind dates they arranged for her, Huang Xiang had never reacted with such fury. The only situation that could provoke such anger was one that hurt her pride.
Between the lines, Rao Jie began to understand that if it were only Huang Xiang going mad, she might suspect that Huang Xiang was simply in a bad mood and taking it out on her. However, even Rao Gang, who appeared to be stopping Huang Xiang's violent behavior, was actually siding with her in every word. It seemed as if they believed she had done something embarrassing that left them feeling ashamed, which was why they acted this way.
