Chapter 18: Cannot Sit Idly by
The night was dark and gloomy, mirroring Qin Zhiruo's heavy heart.
She stood at the entrance of the hospital, glancing up resentfully, thinking to herself: Why didn’t I knock Qin Xi senseless?
Ever since Qin Xi went missing in that earthquake five years ago, Mu Jinhang had become increasingly cold, treating her with growing indifference. He wouldn’t even touch her, and their wedding date had been postponed indefinitely.
She endured for five long years, believing that the dead could not compete with the living. As long as she continued to endure, Mu Jinhang would surely marry her.
But now, Qin Xi was alive!
The thought twisted Qin Zhiruo's delicate features into a grimace.
Determined, she rushed back to the hospital. Just as she was about to push open the door to the ward, she suddenly heard Mu Jinhang say, “As long as you stay by my side, I will give you double what Ji Li can offer. What he cannot give you, I can. Even if you want shares in Mu Group, I am willing to give them to you.”
Mu Jinhang was actually offering Qin Xi shares in Mu Group?!
Qin Zhiruo was taken aback and immediately turned to leave the hospital. She drove straight to the Mu Family Old Residence.
She could no longer sit idly by!
She was supposed to be the rightful wife of the Mu Family; why should Qin Xi receive shares in Mu Group? Those were rightfully hers!
The patriarch of the Mu Family was not at the old residence, having gone out to escape the heat. Now, it was Mrs. Mu who managed the household, and she had always held a fondness for Qin Zhiruo.
"I heard it with my own ears. Mu Jinhang is planning to give some shares of Mu Group to his sister. Such an important matter, how could I dare to deceive you?" Qin Zhiruo nestled against Mrs. Mu, her voice soft yet tinged with a hint of grievance. "I know Mu Jinhang has feelings for his sister, but Mu Group belongs to the entire Mu Family. How can it be casually given away?"
Mrs. Mu frowned upon hearing this and comforted her, "Good child, you always consider our Mu Family. If Mu Jinhang really dares to give shares to that woman of questionable character, the old man would be furious. How could there be peace in the Mu Family then?"
Mrs. Mu remembered the chaos caused by Qin Xi when she was entangled with Mu Jinhang; it had stirred up quite a storm in the city.
However, seeing her son indifferent to it all, she dismissed Qin Xi from her mind and treated it as mere entertainment.
Unexpectedly, that woman had survived the upheaval and reappeared before Mu Jinhang, enticing him to give away shares of Mu Group. Such a woman must not be allowed to remain close to him!
Qin Zhiruo observed Mrs. Mu's expression and added fuel to the fire, "Now Mu Jinhang only has eyes for his sister; he's been at the hospital keeping watch over her. I suggested he go to work so as not to delay company matters, but she insisted on sending me away..."
"How outrageous!" Mrs. Mu slammed her hand on the table. "To think she could lure Mu Jinhang away from the company! Hmph, what sister? She doesn't even compare to you; how could she be worthy of that title!"
Immediately, Mrs. Mu instructed a servant to call Mu Jinhang, claiming she felt unwell and urging him to return home quickly.
Half an hour later, Mu Jinhang arrived at the old residence and saw Qin Zhiruo sitting beside Mrs. Mu, who wore an expression of fury that belied her claim of being unwell.
"Mu Jinhang, did you keep Qin Xi here? You need to get this woman out!"
"Impossible," Mu Jinhang replied coldly.
Mrs. Mu exclaimed, "What do you mean it's impossible! Don't forget, you have a betrothal with Qin Zhiruo. What does it mean for you to keep this woman around? Where does that leave Qin Zhiruo?"
"Mu Jinhang, I know you still have feelings for my sister, but I've waited for you all these years while you turned a blind eye to me. What do those years mean to you?" Qin Zhiruo stepped closer to Mu Jinhang, her eyes glistening with tears, evoking sympathy.
Mu Jinhang shot her a cold glance. "If those years mean nothing, then let's break off the engagement."
Qin Zhiruo froze in place.
