Chapter 1: Threat
In the Luxury Villa District, as Qin Xi listened to Mu Jinhang's cold and merciless threats over the phone, a wave of guilt and worry washed over her. Anxiously, she turned to Ji Li and said, "What should we do? He definitely won't let you off the hook! Maybe… maybe I should talk to him again."
"Xi, don't panic. Nothing will happen," Ji Li said as he pulled her into a tight embrace. Feeling her body tremble slightly in his arms, he tenderly kissed her forehead. "I will always be here for you and Ning Bao."
"But he won't easily let us go," Qin Xi replied with a bitter smile. "It's all my fault for provoking him; otherwise, you wouldn't be dragged into this. Ji Li, why don't you go back to France for now? I really don't want to drag you down any further. You've helped me enough over the years..."
"What nonsense are you talking!" Ji Li's emotions flared up as he tightly grasped Qin Xi's shoulders, his usually gentle face contorted with intensity. "Xi, you know how I feel about you. How could I possibly leave you and Ning Bao behind to go back to France alone? You mustn't say such foolish things!"
Qin Xi had never seen Ji Li so angry before, and she was taken aback. "Okay, okay! I won’t say that again."
Ji Li held her even tighter, his grip strong enough that it felt like he might crush her bones. "Xi, you can't leave me. I won't let Mu Jinhang take you away!"
His voice carried an underlying madness that sent a chill down Qin Xi's spine.
But thinking back on the past five years when Ji Li had taken such good care of her, she chose not to dwell on it further.
Later that night, Qin Xi lay beside Ning Bao as she fell asleep.
Ning Bao happily kissed Qin Xi twice and held onto her fingers tightly. With her eyes closed, she still managed to remind her, "Mommy, you can't sneak away while I'm sleeping! You can't leave me again; otherwise, I'll be very sad."
“Alright, Mommy promises you, I won’t leave you,” Qin Xi said softly, though the worry in her brow was hard to conceal.
That night, she still slept uneasily, feeling as if something was about to happen.
Sure enough, the next afternoon, several officers from the police station suddenly arrived at the villa.
“Mr. Ji, we received a report from Mu Group. They accuse you of using hackers to maliciously attack their client data. We need you to come with us to the police station for questioning,” one officer said expressionlessly.
Qin Xi anxiously grabbed Ji Li’s arm. “This must be slander. Ji Li, you can’t go with them…”
“Miss, please don’t be alarmed. We’re only asking Mr. Ji to cooperate with our investigation; it doesn’t mean he actually committed this act,” the officer patiently explained.
This wasn’t France; Ji Li didn’t have enough power to stand against the police.
He gave Qin Xi a reassuring look and said to the officers, “I’ll go with you.”
Qin Xi watched helplessly as Ji Li got into the police car, her heart racing like an ant on a hot pan, unsure of what to do.
Not long after the police left, Mu Jinhang appeared at the villa.
Seeing the cold man before her, Qin Xi angrily questioned, “Did you slander Ji Li?”
“I didn’t slander him. Yesterday, he deliberately orchestrated a hacker attack on Mu Group’s client data to create an opportunity for himself while taking you away from the hospital,” Mu Jinhang stated calmly.
If he had stayed by Qin Xi's side yesterday, even if Ji Li brought more people over, they might not have been able to take Qin Xi away.
Qin Xi sat pale on the sofa, saying, "It's because of me again..."
She had caused Ji Li to end up in the police station.
Seeing Qin Xi lost and despondent because of Ji Li, Mu Jinhang clenched his fists tightly, his voice growing colder. "As long as you return to my side, I can drop the charges against Ji Li and ensure his safe return to France. Otherwise..."
"Otherwise what? What do you want to do to him?" Qin Xi stood up angrily, tears of pain glistening in her eyes.
Mu Jinhang replied coldly, "Otherwise, I'll make sure he can never return to France for the rest of his life!"
