Chapter 9: Will You Forgive Me?
The secretary moved quickly, employing some means to obtain the hotel surveillance footage.
In the video, Qin Zhiruo was seen supporting the unconscious Qin Xi as they entered the hotel room.
Before long, Ji Li arrived at the door and pressed the doorbell.
Qin Zhiruo stepped out, and the two stood at the doorway, seemingly engaged in conversation. Soon after, Qin Zhiruo left, and Ji Li walked into the room.
The surveillance ended there.
But it was enough!
Years ago, they had all gone to a seaside resort and booked rooms at this hotel. That night, everyone attended a beach bonfire party, where Qin Xi drank heavily with them.
The next morning, Qin Zhiruo and Mu Jinhang came to find Qin Xi for breakfast, intending to let Mu Jinhang see her and Ji Li lying in bed together.
Qin Xi remembered it clearly; Ji Li had explained that he was drunk and had mistakenly entered the wrong room. Yet in the surveillance footage, he appeared completely sober.
Ji Li was lying!
“I don’t believe it. I’m going back to France to ask him. I want to hear him explain it to me in person…” Qin Xi murmured, her face pale as she turned to leave the hospital room.
A bodyguard stopped her.
“I absolutely cannot let you go back to France!” Mu Jinhang said firmly. “If you don’t believe it, then ask him about it in the video. I’m just as eager to hear how he explains this!”
"Alright!" Qin Xi bit her lip tightly, desperately suppressing the tumultuous emotions swirling within her.
Ji Li wouldn’t harm her; there had to be a reason. Perhaps the video was faulty, or maybe she had misheard things back then... She truly couldn’t believe that all the pain she had endured over the years stemmed from Ji Li’s design.
Ji Li was such a gentle person.
When the video connected, Ji Li immediately displayed a look of surprise upon seeing Qin Xi. "Xi, you can contact me!"
Suddenly, he sensed something was off with Qin Xi. "Why do you look so pale? Did Mu Jinhang hurt you again?"
"It’s you who hurt her!" Mu Jinhang appeared in the video.
Ji Li furrowed his brows, his fists clenched tightly, making cracking sounds. "What right do you have to say that! If it weren't for you forcing Xi to stay in the country, she wouldn’t have suffered like this!"
"Ji Li." Qin Xi called out with a tremor in her voice, her fingers gripping the hem of her clothes tightly. "Can you please tell me again why you were in my hotel room back then? Were you really drunk and walked into the wrong room?"
Ji Li's expression changed. "Xi, why are you suddenly asking this?"
"Tell me!"
"Xi, I..." Ji Li looked at her pale face, and all excuses were instantly choked in his throat.
He knew very well that Mu Jinhang must have suspicions and had investigated what happened back then; otherwise, how could Qin Xi suddenly bring it up?
After a long silence, Ji Li finally uttered five words: "Xi, I’m sorry."
He loved her too much, which led him to make such a mistake.
Yet he had no regrets; otherwise, he would never have had the five years with Qin Xi.
"Will you forgive me?" Ji Li's tone was obscure and heavy.
"I don't know," Qin Xi said, tears suddenly streaming down her face. "Ji Li, let me think... I need to think it over."
In truth, she didn't even know what she should be thinking about.
Someone she had always trusted suddenly revealed a despicable side.
If it weren't for Ji Li and Qin Zhiruo conspiring against her, she wouldn't have broken up with Mu Jinhang, nor would she have endured so much humiliation and ridicule, leading everyone to see her as a promiscuous woman.
Yet Ji Li watched her suffer through all this pain, only appearing as a savior after she had completely given up on Mu Jinhang, pulling her out of the mire and making her mistakenly believe that he was gentle and kind.
Qin Xi could no longer distinguish whose fault it truly was.
