Chapter 9: Unwilling to Let Go
The lights illuminated the night as if it were day, completely exposing the three individuals before Ji Li.
"It seems you know everything," Ji Li said, his gaze complex as he looked at the wary Qin Xi. He felt a pang of discomfort but managed to show a gentle smile. "Xi, come with me. Let’s go back to France. I will never do anything to hurt you again, and I won’t let you suffer..."
"Shut up!" Zhang Shu glared at him, protecting Aunt Zhang and Qin Xi behind him. "You lunatic! You caused our family to be separated for five years, and you still have the audacity to treat Xi kindly? You’re utterly insane!"
Ji Li's expression darkened instantly as he continued to fixate on Qin Xi. "You don’t want to come with me?"
"I won’t go to France with you," Qin Xi replied firmly, her pale face tense. "What have you done to Ning Bao?"
Ji Li let out a bitter laugh. "In your eyes, have I become an irredeemable villain?"
Qin Xi pressed her lips together in silence.
"You don’t need to worry; Ning Bao is fine now. I haven’t harmed him," Ji Li reassured her.
"Then why did you kidnap him? How could you bear to take him away from me..." The thought of Ning Bao made Qin Xi feel a wave of anguish, tears welling up in her eyes.
Ji Li wanted to wipe away her tears, but as soon as he moved a step closer, Qin Xi instinctively recoiled.
He had no choice but to lower his hands helplessly, his voice laced with bitterness. "Believe it or not, I never intended to harm Ning Bao. I only wanted you to leave Mu Jinhang."
Ji Li originally planned to take advantage of Mu Jinhang's absence during the meeting, when he couldn't communicate with the outside world, to secretly take Ning Bao away. He intended to make Qin Xi believe that Mu Jinhang disliked Ning Bao and had kidnapped her, thus leading her to give up on him.
When Ji Li took Ning Bao, his people disguised themselves as Mu Jinhang's associates. By the time he sent another group to retrieve Ning Bao, the child would surely think that it was the bad uncle Mu Jinhang who had taken her away.
Ning Bao was only four years old and incapable of lying. So even if Mu Jinhang denied it upon returning to the country, Qin Xi would no longer believe him.
This was Ji Li's initial plan.
However, he did not anticipate that problems would arise during the meeting, causing Mu Jinhang to return home early and send people to search for Ning Bao's whereabouts.
Ji Li understood clearly that he did not yet have enough power in the country to resist Mu Jinhang, so he had no choice but to temporarily hide Ning Bao.
Yet he had underestimated Mu Jinhang's influence.
Mu Jinhang had connections with the black market and directly spent a fortune hiring people from there to track down Ning Bao. In less than a day, they traced it back to him.
However, Mu Jinhang had not yet discovered Ning Bao's exact location.
Ji Li's words left Qin Xi terrified yet furious. "All these years, you claimed to love me, but in reality, you are nothing but selfish! You only care about your own feelings and satisfying your own desires without considering mine!"
"I just wanted you so badly..." Ji Li clenched his fists tightly, deep pain hidden in his eyes.
Qin Xi shook her head in disappointment. "I have long moved on. I am grateful that you saved me from the earthquake and I don’t want to dwell on how you schemed for me to break up with Mu Jinhang. But you absolutely should not have touched Ning Bao."
Her disappointment caused Ji Li immense pain, and she laughed bitterly, "So I have no chance anymore, right?"
"I never gave you a chance. Ji Li, I have always regarded you as my best friend; we have been good since the very beginning."
"I refuse to accept that!" Ji Li shouted in agony, stepping closer to Qin Xi. "I've liked you for seven years and done so much for you. Why can't that compare to just one Mu Jinhang?"
He stared intensely at Qin Xi, enunciating each word, "I won't let go!"
He had no way out now.
