Hu Xiuying thought for a moment and finally said, "Alright, I’ll go along with you. You little rascal, what can I do?"
"Mom is the best," he said as he hugged Hu Xiuying and gave her a kiss.
"Okay, it’s getting late. Let’s go back to our rooms," Hu Xiuying said as she wriggled out of his embrace and started getting dressed.
After a while, both of them were dressed and returned to their respective rooms.
The next morning.
Xiao Cai was helping Grandma prepare breakfast. One by one, the family members slowly got out of bed, but Hu Xiuying and Xiao Lei were still asleep.
"Xiao Zhi, go wake up your second brother for breakfast," Xiao Cai said to Xiao Zhi.
"Let him sleep a bit longer; there are no classes today," Xiao Zhi replied. "Mom hasn’t gotten up yet either."
"Mom works hard every day. It’s not easy for her to get a day off, so don’t wake her up. Let her rest well," Xiaogang said while eating breakfast.
"Brother, can you take me out to play today?" Xiao Zhi asked Xiaogang.
"As long as you behave, I’ll take you to my classmate’s house today," Xiaogang replied.
"Yay! That sounds great!" Xiao Zhi exclaimed excitedly.
"Brother, Xiao Zhi, you guys eat first. Dad went to work in the fields at 5 AM and hasn’t eaten yet. I’ll take some breakfast to him," Xiao Cai said as she took the food and left.
After eating, Xiaogang turned to Grandma and said, "Grandma, when Mom wakes up, please tell her that I took Xiao Zhi to my classmate’s house."
"You two go ahead; I’ll let your mom know when she wakes up," Grandma replied.
Xiaogang and Xiao Zhi then headed out.
In the house, only the Old Man and the old lady were present. The Old Man was in the yard, shucking some corn.
The old lady was tidying up the dishes.
Before long, Xiao Lei got out of bed. Seeing that only his grandfather and grandmother were at home, he asked, “Grandma, where did they go?”
“Xiaogang took Xiao Zhi out to play, and Xiao Cai went to deliver lunch to your father,” his grandmother replied.
“Oh,” Xiao Lei responded, then brought a bowl of rice to the table and started eating while asking, “Grandma, has my mom gotten up yet?”
“Not yet,” his grandmother said.
No wonder, Xiao Lei thought to himself. After staying up so late last night, it was understandable. He felt a surge of happiness; finally, he could have some time with his mom. He continued to enjoy his breakfast.
Suddenly, the door to his mother’s room opened. His mother emerged lazily in the same long nightgown she had worn the previous night. Upon seeing Xiao Lei sitting alone at the table eating, she blushed slightly and asked, “Where is everyone?”
“Xiaogang took Xiao Zhi out to play, and Xiao Cai went to deliver lunch to Dad,” his grandmother informed Hu Xiuying.
“Oh,” Hu Xiuying replied.
“Go ahead and eat; your food is getting cold,” her mother urged her.
“Got it,” Hu Xiuying said as she walked toward the bathroom in the back yard. After brushing her teeth and washing her face, she brought a bowl of rice and sat down at the table to eat.
Xiao Lei watched Hu Xiuying as he ate, a look of pure happiness on his face.
Hu Xiuying felt herself blush and shot him a glance, whispering, “Don’t look at me like that.”
Seeing that his grandmother had gone into the kitchen, Xiao Lei leaned closer to Hu Xiuying and whispered, “Mom, you’re so beautiful.”
Hu Xiuying felt her face flush at the words and playfully tapped Xiao Lei on the head. "Stop talking nonsense and eat your meal." However, hearing Xiao Lei praise her made her heart flutter with a hint of affection.
"Mom, when are we going to the woods?" Xiao Lei asked softly.
Hu Xiuying's face turned even redder as she shot him a glance and whispered, "This afternoon." After saying that, she shyly lowered her head and focused on her food.
Just then, Xiao Cai returned and saw them eating. "Mom, Second Brother, you’re only eating now?"
The mother and son remembered that they had stayed up too late last night, which was why they were having their meal so late. They both felt a bit embarrassed.
"Has your dad eaten?" Hu Xiuying asked.
"Not yet. Dad said he would eat after finishing his work. I left my food there and came back," Xiao Cai replied.
"Then have you eaten, Xiao Cai?" Xiao Lei inquired.
"Not yet. I hurried back to eat," Xiao Cai said as he thought about going to the kitchen to get some food.
"Just sit down; I'll get it for you," Xiao Lei quickly set down his bowl and stood up to head toward the kitchen.
Upon hearing this, Xiao Cai's eyes widened in disbelief, and he stood frozen with his mouth agape, as if he couldn't believe his ears. "Mom, is this really Xiao Lei?"
