I went to a friend's wedding and unexpectedly encountered my ex-boyfriend, with whom I had been in a relationship for ten years. His girlfriend mentioned that they were about to get married. But then he turned around and offered me two hundred thousand a month to be with him again. What he didn’t know was that I had left him not because of money.
I hadn't seen Jiang Yu in five years. Our paths crossed again at a friend's wedding, and I bumped into Yu Tian. Jiang Yu was nearby and caught me just before I fell to the ground. Yu Tian, seeing me in Jiang Yu's arms, reached out to pull me away but accidentally bumped into a waiter.
"Sorry," Yu Tian said, her face turning pale as red wine spilled on her dress. Once we separated, she headed to the restroom.
While Yu Tian was away, my classmates began gossiping about the reasons behind my breakup with Jiang Yu.
"It must be because Su Mei is materialistic; she dumped him when she saw he had no money," one said.
"Yeah, now Jiang Yu is a big shot; Su Mei must be regretting it," another chimed in.
"I heard Su Mei is not doing well these days; she deserves it for abandoning Jiang Yu," someone else added.
Their chatter filled the air, and I felt their judgment weighing down on me. Jiang Yu cleared his throat, silencing the group.
"It was her decision to break up," he stated casually, confirming that I had been the one to end things.
I lowered my gaze, maintaining a calm expression, but my slightly trembling hands betrayed my emotions.
When Yu Tian returned and sensed the awkward atmosphere, she quietly asked, "What’s wrong?"
"Nothing, just catching up," Jiang Yu replied nonchalantly.
Yu Tian looked at me meaningfully and chuckled softly, "If Su Mei hadn’t let go back then, you wouldn’t have met me now."
Her words sparked a wave of schadenfreude among the guests; they seemed pleased by my discomfort.
Jiang Yu cleared his throat again to break the tension. "It's all in the past now."
I nodded calmly.
Yu Tian raised his glass and smiled, saying, “Miss Su, I toast to you, thanking you for your decision to let go back then.”
“When we get married, we will definitely invite you.”
“…”
I smiled faintly and drank the wine in one go.
After the wedding, I stood at the hotel entrance waiting for Wang Ting to pick me up.
She was still on the phone, indignantly defending me: “Why didn’t you explain yourself when they said those things about you?”
“Explain what?”
“Explain why you broke up with him back then, tell him it wasn’t for money.”
I chuckled softly, “He already has a girlfriend; what’s the point in saying all that? Besides, I’ve already given up on Jiang Yu.”
There was a long silence on the other end before Wang Ting finally said, “Let’s talk when I get there. It’s hot outside; find a shady spot to wait.”
I hung up and touched my sunburned cheeks.
In the distance, Jiang Yu and his girlfriend were walking toward me.
His girlfriend linked her arm with his and smiled shyly. “I was so nervous just now that I almost fell; luckily, you caught me.”
Jiang Yu didn’t say anything, but his gaze was fixed on me.
His girlfriend noticed me too and gave me a meaningful glance.
“Yu Ge, I’ll head back first; see you tonight~”
Jiang Yu nodded, watching her leave.
I instinctively glanced at their parting scene. Before getting into the car, Jiang Yu’s girlfriend showed off the jade pendant around her neck.
That was the jade pendant passed down to daughters-in-law from the the Fu Family. Once upon a time, it had hung around my neck too.
Jiang Yu’s deep voice broke through my thoughts: “Have you seen enough?”
I withdrew my gaze and remained silent.
However, many memories flashed through my mind.
The day Jiang Yu and I broke up.
It was pouring rain outside.
I had initiated the breakup while Jiang Yu pleaded with me over the phone.
I shook my head firmly: “Jiang Yu, let’s break up.”
“Aren’t you well aware that everything I did was for money? Now someone can offer me more; what use do you have!” he shouted in agony.
“Su Mei, you’re lying; you must be deceiving me!”
“Do you know how cruel this is?”
My nose tinged with bitterness as I fought back tears and hung up the phone.
Until later, I learned that Jiang Yu had gone abroad as planned.
Even though we had broken up, I couldn't let him go. I kept following his news. I knew he had succeeded in his studies after going abroad. I knew he had started a successful business, and his company was growing larger. I also knew he still harbored resentment towards me.
I pulled my thoughts back, my eyes already moist.
Jiang Yu scoffed coldly, "Su Mei, are you really that short on money right now?"
I frowned, "What do you mean?"
"How much do you need? I'll give it to you."
I turned my face away, unwilling to respond.
Jiang Yu grabbed my arm and said coldly, "Su Mei, we need to talk."
"I have nothing to discuss with you." I struggled, trying to distance myself from him.
Jiang Yu seized my other arm, forcing me to look at him. "What are you going to Meng Jiangnan for? Are you in debt again?"
"Su Mei, how did you become like this?"
I was momentarily stunned before I realized what he meant.
I replied flatly, "What I do is none of your business."
"Jiang Yu, stop meddling."
Jiang Yu's expression darkened. After a long silence, he said, "I'll give you two hundred thousand a month if you accompany me. How about that?"
I was taken aback for a moment before bursting into laughter.
So this is how he saw me.
Taking a deep breath, I pushed him away with force.
