"So, you can help me refine the oil, right?" Madam squatted in front of me, looking up with hope in her eyes. "As long as I have the oil, I won’t have to be afraid anymore, right?"
I looked at her quietly. "Yes."
"Then hurry up!" Madam gripped my neck anxiously. "You need to refine the oil now!"
I let her hold me, my voice soft. "I need materials."
"What materials?" Madam looked at me frantically. "Isn't this all material?"
"Human fat," I replied, meeting her gaze. "The fat of someone close to you."
Madam froze.
"Anyone will do; even the servants who have served for so many years can be used to refine the oil. I don't care; just refine it for me."
I continued to watch her in silence.
Madam stood still, glancing at the servants nearby. They were all trembling in fear.
"Madam..." A Yong looked at her in terror. "Madam, you wouldn't..."
"A Yong," Madam smiled slightly at him. "How many years have you been here?"
A Yong trembled as he stepped back. "Madam, I've served Commander and you for ten years. You can't do this to me, Madam..."
He turned to run.
Someone nearby was quick and pinned him to the ground.
"Madam!" A Yong struggled desperately, pleading for his life. "Madam, please don’t kill me! I beg you..."
Madam coldly regarded him, raising an eyebrow. "A Yong, after all these years with me, you should know that I despise betrayal."
With that, Madam stepped closer to A Yong, lifting his chin with a chilling smile on her lips. "I've treated you well over the years, haven’t I? Now it’s time for you to show your loyalty."
She straightened up and said coldly, "Take him away and refine the oil."
"Yes!"
Several people dragged A Yong away. I lowered my head, making it difficult for anyone to see my expression. A Yong screamed, her cries echoing with heart-wrenching desperation. I remained expressionless as I directed others to prepare what was needed.
"Madam, in two days, you will be able to use the new Living Fat," I said, keeping my head down and speaking respectfully.
Madam expressed some dissatisfaction, "Why do we have to wait two more days?"
"It takes time to prepare," I replied softly. "If the concoction isn't done well... it will affect the results."
Madam paused for a moment and took a deep breath. "Alright, I'll wait another two days." She waved her hand at me dismissively. "You may go."
"Yes." I bowed my head and retreated.
When night fell, I secretly made my way to the grove in the garden. Deep within the trees stood a woman. She seemed to have known I would come, standing in the shadows and quietly watching me.
"You've come?" she smiled slightly. "I knew you would."
"Yes," I nodded.
She looked at me, her lips curling up slightly. "I told you, I would bear this burden with you."
The Second Concubine gently touched the mark on my neck left by Madam's grip. "You've suffered."
I shook my head. "It's nothing."
The Second Concubine sighed and took my hand. "Don't worry, it will be over soon."
I nodded in agreement. Together, we walked hand in hand—she in the light, and I in the shadows.
The next day, the Second Concubine waited for me by the Garden Pond.
“How is it?” she whispered.
“Midday,” I replied quietly. “I will deal with A Yong today.”
“Good.” The Second Concubine squeezed my hand. “Be careful. The Commander is in a good mood today and may come looking for me. If you’re late, just wait.”
“Understood.” I nodded.
At midday, I arrived at the dimly lit secret chamber.
A Yong had already been knocked unconscious and was thrown on the ground like a dead dog.
I sat quietly beside him, polishing the knife in my hand.
Before long, the Second Concubine arrived as well.
I glanced at her, then took a basin of water and splashed it directly onto A Yong's face.
He woke up, terrified, shrinking into the corner of the wall.
He couldn’t escape.
