In my previous life, I suffered immensely due to his betrayal. I brought him into the secret realm, assisted him in his cultivation, and even sought out the Crimson Pearl Elixir for him to enhance his abilities. I thought that my devotion to him was a tremendous gift. Yet he believed that everything I did for him was merely what he deserved. He was selfish and ruthless towards me, convinced that the one who truly loved him was Hong Qiao, and only she was worthy of his affection.
In this life, I no longer held any lingering feelings for him. I turned to Yu Cheng and smiled slightly. "From now on, I will protect you."
At my words, everyone present changed their expressions. They understood that I was declaring to all that I would safeguard Yu Cheng and would not allow anyone to bully him.
"I will also protect the princess well," Yu Cheng said firmly, gripping my hand tightly as he looked into my eyes with determination.
I pushed his hand away and gently touched my slightly flushed cheek. "Since we have made our choice, let’s begin!" The Empress snorted coldly and waved her hand, causing four figures to appear within the magic circle.
The Contract required four people to stand within the circle simultaneously to endure the cleansing of heavenly thunder. However, it quickly became apparent that black fox and the white fox's spiritual energy dissipated rapidly under the thunder.
"Hong Qiao, save me!" Ren Fei cried out in a pale face, seeking help from Hong Qiao.
"Ridiculous!" the Empress scolded coldly. "If black fox cannot withstand this trial, then it is his fate!"
Hong Qiao naturally replied, "That's right. I am the next heir of the Fox Clan; every bit of my spiritual energy is invaluable and cannot be wasted on a black fox!"
In my previous life, Hong Qiao had acted just like this. To preserve her strength, she allowed Ren Fei to struggle under the heavenly thunder until he was on the brink of death.
Once again, Ren Fei had the opportunity to change his fate, yet he still chose Hong Qiao. His ending was already predetermined.
I glanced at Yu Cheng beside me; he was starting to look unsteady.
"Yu Cheng, are you alright?" I asked, concern creeping into my voice.
"The princess need not worry about me," Yu Cheng replied with a faint smile, his face pale as paper. "The princess has already done enough for me; how could Yu Cheng not be content?"
"Yu Cheng's status is humble; if he cannot bear this little burden, how can he be worthy of the princess?"
"What does worthy or unworthy matter?" I said, my frustration rising. "If you keep saying such things, I will be angry!"
"Princess..." Yu Cheng looked at me with determination. "The princess is truly kind to Yu Cheng."
"I am your wife, so naturally, I will stand by you through thick and thin." I smiled and increased my strength, blocking a bolt of lightning meant for Yu Cheng.
In the end, the Contract succeeded. Ren Fei lay on the brink of death, while Yu Cheng remained unharmed.
I caught a glimpse of Ren Fei looking at me, his eyes filled with resentment. He was blaming me.
I recalled that in our past life, ever since he had been with me, he had never suffered such severe injuries as he did today. Yet now, he nearly lost his life in the Contract.
After the Contract ceremony concluded, it would not be long before the next heir's inheritance ceremony took place.
On that day, Hong Qiao stood on the sacrificial platform, her expression cold and distant.
I grabbed Hong Qiao's arm as she tried to push me away in frustration.
"Sister, why do you want to stop me from transforming into Nine-Tails?"
"Is it because you are dissatisfied that Ren Fei fell in love with me?"
I couldn't help but laugh out loud. True to form, Hong Qiao's words turned me into a target for everyone’s ire.
Sure enough, before I could say anything, many of my clansmen stepped forward to accuse me.
"Second Princess, how can you obstruct the transformation of the Nine-Tails for your own selfish reasons? Are you trying to bring ruin upon our clan?"
"Second Princess, our clan has not seen a Nine-Tails in nearly a thousand years. How can you be so heartless?"
"Second Princess, if our clan suffers great misfortune because of this, can you bear the responsibility?"
