“One night, the whole family was suffocated to death by a swarm of Apple Snails,” Xiao Hu said, still trembling with fear. 0

I shivered at the thought, unable to imagine how many Apple Snails it would take to suffocate Lin Kai's family. 0

“Many, countless of them, about the same size as the ones we saw last time, crawling all over Lin Kai's house and yard,” Xiao Hu continued. 0

“What about now? Where are those snails?” I looked around but saw no sign of the scene Xiao Hu described. 0

“This morning, someone called in the Mourning Matron. After a lot of effort, those snails finally dispersed. The Mourning Matron is still inside,” Xiao Hu explained. 0

“What on earth is going on? Could it be related to the female corpse we found in the cave last time?” I murmured to myself. 0

“Who knows? We can go ask the Mourning Matron,” Xiao Hu said, his face filled with worry. 0

“Okay.” I nodded and squatted down beside him. 0

My mind was a mess, with thoughts of Jin Can Can and Lin Kai's family intertwining, making me feel dizzy. I couldn't shake the feeling that there was some connection between these two events. 0

I planned to wait until the Mourning Matron was free so I could ask her about Jin Can Can and the truth behind Lin Kai's family's tragedy. 0

After the crowd dispersed, the Mourning Matron finally emerged from the house. 0

I hurried over to her, ready to speak, but she suddenly turned pale and pulled me aside. 0

“You brat, your aura is dim and weak. Have you stirred up something?” the Mourning Matron asked darkly. 0

It dawned on me that things might be more serious than I had imagined. I quickly recounted everything about Jin Can Can to her. 0

After hearing my story, the Mourning Matron's expression grew even more serious. 0

“What should I do now?” I asked, nearly in tears. 0

“You should go home for now. I'll come back tomorrow morning,” she said after a moment of thought. 0

“Mourning Matron, can you let me stay somewhere tonight? I’m too scared to go back,” I stammered as I trembled. 0

“No!” she replied firmly. 0

“Why not?” I asked, even more confused. 0

"You've already provoked her, and she won't let you off easily. If you don't go back now, it will only alert her and make her more vigilant," the Mourning Matron explained. 0

"But if I go back now, isn't that walking into a trap?" I was growing more anxious. 0

"She must be plotting something right now. If you don't return, who knows what she might do to you? It could be even more dangerous," the Mourning Matron shook her head. 0

"But..." I wanted to argue further. 0

"There’s no 'but' about it. You must go back tonight; otherwise, you will surely die," the Mourning Matron's tone was firm. 0

"I..." I was terrified, tears almost spilling from my eyes. 0

"You don't need to be too afraid. She hasn't harmed you the last two nights; she must have a plan. You should be safe tonight," the Mourning Matron reassured me. 0

"It would be best if you spent the night at your family shrine; your ancestors can protect you," she added after a moment's thought. 0

"Mourning Matron, can I..." I tried to resist one last time. 0

"No, if you don't return tonight, you will die for sure," the Mourning Matron interrupted me directly. 0

When I got home, Jin Can Can was standing at the door. 0

"You’re back!" Jin Can Can's face lit up with a smile upon seeing me. 0

"Yeah," I replied, my emotions tangled. 0

"You must be hungry; I've prepared some food for you," she said, turning to bring out the dishes from the kitchen. 0

Looking at the array of dishes before me, my heart was filled with mixed feelings. 0

Though I was scared, there was still a flicker of warmth within me. Perhaps she wasn't as bad as we imagined? 0
