"You know that if I had arrived just one minute later, you would have been dead!" the Mourning Matron glared at me, her anger palpable. 0

"I..." I lowered my head, unsure of what to say. 0

"Did I not tell you to wait for me at home? Why didn't you listen?" the Mourning Matron questioned sharply. 0

"I..." I hesitated, struggling to find the right words. 0

"Did something happen to you?" Her tone softened slightly. 0

"I..." I still couldn't bring myself to speak. 0

"Just tell me what's going on; don't keep it to yourself." The Mourning Matron patted my shoulder gently. 0

"I... I intended to wait for you at home, but Jin Can Can told me to leave the village." Finally, the words escaped my lips. 0

"Why did she want you to leave the village?" the Mourning Matron asked, puzzled. 0

"She said I had to leave immediately, or I would die," I replied honestly. 0

"And you believed her?" The Mourning Matron's gaze bore into me. 0

"I..." I looked down, unable to meet her eyes. 0

"Do you realize that if any one of you four leaves or dies, everyone in this village will perish?" the Mourning Matron said earnestly. 0

"What?" I was shocked. 0

"Did you think you four were chosen at random?" she continued, her expression serious. 0

"Weren't we?" I asked, confused. 0

"Of course not. You four are the hope of this village. Your existence sustains its vitality. If even one of you leaves or dies, the life force of this village will be shattered, and everyone here will die," the Mourning Matron explained gravely. 0

"Why is it like this?" I couldn't believe it. 0

"This is the secret of the village, passed down through generations. That’s why only you four can transport the female ghosts," she sighed. 0

"But..." I still found it hard to accept. 0

"Think about it: why didn't she just kill you directly but instead tried to coax you into leaving?" The Mourning Matron looked at me intently. 0

“Why?” I asked, pressing for an answer. 0
“Because she cannot kill you; she can only make you leave on your own,” the Mourning Matron explained. 0
Suddenly, everything clicked into place. 0
“The energy of the sun suppresses evil spirits. None of you four can be harmed; you are the four vital gates of the village,” the Mourning Matron said firmly. 0
“I understand,” I nodded. 0
“And do you know what happened to Lin Kai?” the Mourning Matron suddenly changed the subject. 0
“What happened?” I asked eagerly. 0
“Actually, Lin Kai was already dead before the female corpse was buried,” the Mourning Matron stated clearly, word by word. 0
“What?” I could hardly believe my ears. 0
“The Lin Kai you knew was actually a walking corpse,” the Mourning Matron continued. 0
“How is that possible?” I was in disbelief. 0
“Therefore, her choice of you is quite simple,” the Mourning Matron looked at me intently. 0
“Because you are alone and easy to target.” 0
I was completely convinced by the Mourning Matron's words. 0
“So now you must come with me, for the sake of the villagers and for yourself, to the Buddhist Hall,” she said with an undeniable tone. 0
The Mourning Matron led me to the village's Buddhist Hall and lit incense. 0
“Wang Yuan, stay here; the Buddhist Hall will protect you. As long as you do not step outside this door, you will not be harmed,” the Mourning Matron said solemnly. 0
“Mourning Matron, I…” I hesitated. 0
“I know what you want to say, but this is not the time for discussion. You must do as I say, understand?” The Mourning Matron's tone was very serious. 0
“Alright,” I nodded. 0
“Remember, no matter what happens, do not leave the Buddhist Hall,” she reminded me once more. 0
“I understand,” I nodded earnestly. 0
The Mourning Matron looked at me, as if she wanted to say something but hesitated. 0

“Is there anything else, Mourning Matron?” I asked. 0

“Nothing, just take care of yourself,” she replied, shaking her head before turning to leave. 0

I watched her retreating figure, my heart filled with mixed emotions. 0
