“What am I supposed to do? I’ve already told everyone that I’m getting a promotion. How can you expect me to face people after this? Don’t I care about my reputation?” Rao Jian said anxiously, “Mom, look!”
Huang Xiang was also in a difficult position. Forget about the previous boyfriend; this one was even worse...
Seeing that Huang Xiang wasn’t on his side, Rao Jian slammed the door and stormed into his room.
Huang Xiang looked at Rao Gang, who was visibly upset, and then at Rao Jie. She felt a bit frustrated, thinking that her daughter was making things difficult for her. No matter what she asked her to do, she stubbornly refused.
“Now look what you’ve done! Are you satisfied? You’ve caused chaos in the house. Your brother might not be able to climb up the ladder now, and if someone decides to retaliate against him, just think about whether you’ll feel guilty,” Huang Xiang said.
Huang Xiang always did this; whether it was Rao Jie’s fault or not, as long as it involved her, she liked to shift the blame onto her. It was as if making Rao Jie feel guilty would somehow control her actions.
In the past, Rao Jie would fall for it, but not anymore.
Rao Jie retorted, “And what about you pushing me towards a man I don’t love for Rao Jian’s promotion? Living in an unhappy marriage that could end in divorce at any moment—don’t you feel guilty about that?”
Rao Gang didn’t respond; he felt that there was some truth to her words.
However, Huang Xiang turned red with anger and said, “What do you know? We’re doing this for your own good! We’ve experienced more than you can imagine. If you don’t listen to your elders now, just wait and see how you’ll suffer later. I want to see if you and that Professor Wu will last. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.”
“Enough! Why do you always wish for your daughter’s misfortune? Is this how a mother should act?” Rao Gang couldn’t take it anymore.
But Huang Xiang seemed sulky, twisting her words. “I’m doing this for her sake! She’s the one making me angry! How can I not care for my own daughter? You both lack conscience; I’m the only one who cares for this family!”
Once Huang Xiang got into this mode, Rao Gang found it hard to argue back.
Rao Jie didn’t want to engage further. Seeing that Rao Gang had handled things, she stood up and decided to leave. She was growing increasingly detached from this home.
Huang Xiang immediately shouted, “Where do you think you’re going?”
Rao Jie turned back and said, “Now that the misunderstanding is cleared up, I’m leaving.”
Huang Xiang quickly replied, “No way! Rao Jie, you’re coming back home today.”
Rao Jie paused and then laughed incredulously. “You want me to leave but also want me back? Do I have no freedom at all? After everything that’s happened, are you still not giving up?”
Huang Xiang snapped back angrily, “I never said you had to come back for anything specific! This is for your own good. Since you’re officially dating someone now, you should behave properly. Living together before marriage is just inappropriate. Since things with the the Hu Family are over, forget about what was said before; you can move back in.”
Rao Jie had once considered returning home but no longer wanted to. Although she had hesitated about being so close to Wu Rong before, Huang Xiang’s insistence made her resistance even stronger.
She shook her head and refused. “I think I’m old enough now; living together with you all isn’t convenient anymore. In today’s world, many people live together without being married—I’m not an oddity.”
