When Rao Jie returned to the Wu Family, she felt a twinge of regret. The thought of having to explain herself to Wu Rong made her want to immediately go back on her decision to come home. Her father was relatively easygoing, but her mother might very well storm into the school to confront Wu Rong.
Sometimes, Rao Jie truly didn’t understand Huang Xiang’s way of expressing maternal love. She remembered back in high school when some students were caught up in early romances. At that time, she was focused solely on her studies and had no extra thoughts about relationships, even though boys would pursue her.
Once, for reasons unknown, someone secretly slipped a love letter into her backpack. It was tucked away so deep that Rao Jie didn’t discover it for a long time. However, when Huang Xiang rummaged through her bag, she found it and opened it without asking for permission. After reading it, she flew into a rage and the next day dragged Rao Jie to school to confront the homeroom teacher, forcibly bringing the boy who sent the letter to light and involving his parents in a scolding.
Rao Jie could still vividly recall the humiliation in that boy's eyes. Huang Xiang berated both him and his parents publicly, and when they got home, she scolded Rao Jie for being oblivious to the situation. That incident left a lasting impression on Rao Jie, which is why she never dared to date early; even in college, it took her a long time to come around.
Later, Rao Jie reflected that perhaps it was all about face. If she were caught in an early romance during high school, Huang Xiang would feel embarrassed if others found out, especially since at that time she didn’t care much about her grades. Similarly, now it was the same; Huang Xiang wasn’t really concerned about how well Rao Jie was doing outside; what mattered was whether people would gossip if they knew she was living with Wu Rong.
No matter how glamorous the surface seemed, at its core, it was still an issue of pride—something Rao Jie understood clearly. She couldn’t let her parents feel ashamed; that was a duty as their child since they had given her life. Although her feelings for this family had nearly reached despair, she still wanted to maintain a delicate balance on the surface. This could be seen as a sad and self-deprecating complex.
That’s why she agreed to come home. Despite having various reasons, Rao Jie sadly realized that any excuse would undoubtedly fall flat in front of Wu Rong.
Soon after, Wu Rong returned from his morning classes. As soon as he entered, he asked, “Why didn’t you let me pick you up?”
“It’s fine; I had some free time and came back by myself,” Rao Jie replied quickly, standing up with a hint of awkwardness.
Wu Rong was changing his shoes and found her demeanor a bit strange. “What’s wrong? Is there something you want to tell me? Is it about your family?” He was quite perceptive regarding Rao Jie’s reactions and could tell from her expression that something was amiss.
Rao Jie hesitated for a moment, deciding not to share the grievances she had endured. Instead, she said, "There was a small misunderstanding before. My family wants me to go back and explain things. I also took the opportunity to tell them about us, and they don't oppose our relationship."
Wu Rong scoffed, "We don't need their approval to be together."
He had never liked Rao Jie's parents, not from the very beginning. If they weren't her biological parents, he would have preferred that Rao Jie never see them again; they were just a waste of time.
Rao Jie was well aware of Wu Rong's attitude, which made it even harder for her to speak up.
Wu Rong walked over and was about to embrace Rao Jie when he suddenly noticed her ear. He quickly reached out, pinching her chin to turn her head. "What happened to your ear? How did you get hurt?"
Rao Jie hurriedly replied, "I accidentally bumped into something."
