Lightning split the night sky, illuminating the sinister face of Wang Ming, the assistant to Manager Zhang. The device in his hand flickered with an eerie red light, numbers jumping continuously like some sort of timer. My heart raced as I realized we might be facing a life-and-death crisis. 0

Cold sweat trickled down my forehead, soaking my temples. Wang Ming's smile appeared particularly sinister under the flash of lightning, as if he were a messenger from hell. The flickering red light resembled a demon's eye, fixated on us, suffocating me with its oppressive gaze. 0

"Very clever," Wang Ming sneered, stepping forward. The sound of his polished shoes echoed sharply in the silent bell tower, piercing the stillness like the footsteps of death, striking my nerves with each step. "You actually found this box. Fang Wen, your sister was just as clever back then—what happened to her?" His voice carried a hint of mad triumph, as if he were flaunting his victory. 0

Fang Wen's face turned pale in an instant, like a blank sheet of paper devoid of color. She gripped the diary tightly, her knuckles turning white and bones clearly defined, as if she intended to crush it. I could feel her inner turmoil and rage boiling over like a volcano ready to erupt. "It was you! You killed my sister!" Her voice trembled with fury, each word squeezed out through clenched teeth, filled with hatred. 0

"Killed her?" Wang Ming let out a piercing laugh that echoed hauntingly in the empty bell tower. "No, she's still 'alive'—in another way. The 'Eternal Life Project,' what a beautiful name!" He raised the device in his hand; the red light blazed even brighter, mocking our ignorance. "Do you know what this is? Once activated, the entire bell tower will collapse. You and all that evidence will be buried forever." 0

A chill shot from my feet to the top of my head; my blood felt like it had frozen. The shadow of death loomed over us, leaving no escape. Suddenly, Old Li stepped forward, his face resolute as he attempted to approach Wang Ming. 0

But Wang Ming was prepared; he immediately raised his gun, the dark muzzle aimed at Old Li. "Don't move!" he barked, his voice filled with warning. "One more step and I’ll detonate it right now." 0

My mind raced as I scanned the room for any glimmer of hope. The lightning flickered intermittently, illuminating photos on the walls. The people in those photos varied in age but all bore expressions of fear and despair. I noticed numbers and locations on the pictures that seemed to hint at something ominous. My heart sank as a terrifying truth began to surface. 0

"You used orphans for human experiments," I said slowly, my voice trembling slightly but striving to remain calm. I saw Wang Ming's expression shift slightly; a flicker of panic crossed his eyes, and I knew I had struck a nerve. "Under the guise of 'Eternal Life,' you were actually conducting illegal organ transplants and genetic experiments, weren't you?" 0

"Shut up!" Wang Ming exploded suddenly; his expression twisted into something monstrous, like an enraged beast. "You know nothing! This is for science, for breaking the limits of life! The sacrifices of those orphans are worth it!" His voice grew louder and more frenzied, as if justifying himself while trying to mask his own fear. 0

At that moment, Xu Kai spoke up suddenly; his voice was deep and powerful: "So after President Chen discovered the truth and wanted to report you, you killed him?" 0

A flicker of panic crossed Wang Ming's eyes, but he quickly regained his composure. Taking a deep breath, he struggled to control his emotions. "President Chen is too weak. He wants to terminate the experiment and destroy all the data. How can he just give up after twenty years of hard work?" His tone carried a hint of helplessness and regret, as if President Chen's death was a consequence of his own actions. 0

Suddenly, a violent tremor shook the tower, which seemed to groan under the strain. Debris rained down from the ceiling, stirring up dust that made me cough uncontrollably. The situation was dire; we felt as if we were trapped in a crumbling cage, at risk of being buried alive at any moment. I noticed that Wang Ming's attention was momentarily distracted by the shaking—perhaps this was our only chance to escape. Seizing the opportunity, I lunged at him. 0

In the chaos, gunfire erupted, bullets whizzing past my ears, their searing pain sending me into a dizzy spell. Lao Li and Xu Kai charged in as well; the three of us became entangled in a fierce struggle, fists and feet colliding with dull thuds. In this life-or-death moment, Fang Wen suddenly screamed, "Watch out!" 0

I turned to see that the skeletal figure had somehow "stood" up again, moving towards us like a grotesque puppet, its bones creaking ominously in the silence of the clock tower. At that moment, Wang Ming grinned maniacally and pressed a button on the device. With a thunderous boom, the entire clock tower shook violently as if doomsday had arrived. 0

"You all have to die!" Wang Ming laughed maniacally, his voice filled with despair and madness. "The secret of the Eternal Life Project will be buried here forever!" 0

In that critical moment, I saw Fang Wen rushing towards the Metal Box, her eyes filled with determination as if she was prepared to face death. The instant her hand touched the box, a blinding blue light erupted from within, illuminating the dark chamber. In that radiance, I seemed to see countless faces twisted in agony, their eyes brimming with accusation and despair. 0

As the clock tower began to collapse under the violent tremors, Wang Ming's screams mingled with the deafening sounds of metal breaking—like a symphony of death. I desperately lunged towards Fang Wen, trying to reach her. Just as my fingers were about to touch her, a massive concrete block fell from the ceiling. 0

In that fleeting moment before consciousness slipped away, I saw a crack open in the Metal Box, revealing something emitting an eerie blue light within. That glow seemed to conceal the final secret of this horrifying experiment… 0
