“Liu Yun! Liu Yun!” Li Ziyi called out repeatedly, peering around the courtyard, but no one responded. Frustration bubbled up inside him, and his face flushed with anger. “You useless girl, what kind of shadow guard are you? If someone were to attack me right now, would I just stand here waiting to die?” 0

“Did you call for me, Your Highness?” Liu Yun's voice seemed to come from a distant place, faint and tinged with fatigue. 0

Li Ziyi strained his ears and looked around for a while before realizing she was hiding behind a half-height flowerbed in the courtyard. He stomped his foot in irritation. “Get out here!” 0

Reluctantly, Liu Yun emerged from behind the flowers. The moment she stepped out, she startled Li Ziyi. 0

Her face and neck were covered in small red welts, clearly the result of mosquito bites, some areas even scratched raw and swollen. 0

“You… you…” Li Ziyi stammered, momentarily at a loss for words, his eyes wide with surprise. 0

“I’m fine! It’s late spring and early summer now; there are more mosquitoes around, so getting bitten a few times is unavoidable!” Liu Yun replied, still managing to bow respectfully despite her discomfort, maintaining the poise expected of a shadow guard. 0

With her hands on her hips, Li Ziyi began pacing in place like an ant on a hot pan. “How did I end up with such an incompetent shadow guard? Did you learn your skills just to lie in the grass and feed mosquitoes? Right now, it’s your prince who has been set up to marry you…” 0

“Your Highness, please forgive me!” Liu Yun suddenly knelt down with a thud, her face filled with panic as her forehead touched the ground. “I know this action is somewhat inappropriate, but I believe that if it can help lady Yuan rescue Yuan Zhi County, it would be a good thing! Although my status is humble and unworthy of you, I am still self-aware. This marriage is merely a temporary measure; I would never dare to harbor any delusions. Once this matter is resolved, Your Highness can simply issue a divorce decree…” 0

Her voice quivered slightly, evoking sympathy from those who heard it. 0

Li Ziyi was taken aback. “Wait a minute—are you saying you knew about this from the start?” 0

“Yes!” Liu Yun nodded earnestly, her head lowered so that her expression was hidden from view; only her shoulders trembled slightly. “ lady Yuan and Head Constable Ren both consulted me about this matter beforehand.” 0

“So you’re in cahoots with them?” Li Ziyi’s previously agitated heart suddenly became more entangled. His brows knitted tightly together. “And you’ve already decided that you want me to divorce you after marrying me?” 0

“ lady Yuan is not only the prince's beloved but also somewhat of a master to me. If lady Yuan is unhappy, then the prince is unhappy. Therefore, if I can alleviate lady Yuan's worries, it is equivalent to easing the prince's troubles…” Her voice was low and resolute, carrying a sense of loyalty. 0

“Enough!” Li Ziyi's face turned pale with anger, veins bulging on his forehead. Especially as he looked at Liu Yun, who appeared so relaxed and confident, as if they were discussing the weather rather than her lifelong commitment. His fury surged instantly. “Have you even considered the consequences of this? You just agreed without a second thought! You are a woman; do you understand? A young lady’s reputation is of utmost importance. If you marry me in such a muddled way and I end up dismissing you, do you think you’ll ever marry again?” He paced back and forth in the room, his hands flailing as his emotions spiraled out of control. 0

“I don’t want to!” Liu Yun replied decisively, her voice clear and resonant. “Since I am the prince’s shadow guard, I will protect him for life, until death!” She straightened her back, her expression serious, her eyes filled with unwavering determination. 0

“You…” In that moment, Li Ziyi felt an inexplicable urge to rush over and give her a good beating. 0

He halted his steps, clenching his fists tightly, his knuckles turning white from the pressure. Her declaration of loyalty only added to the chaos in his already tumultuous heart. 0

What was going on? He had intended to win her over to his side, to see if there was any way to avoid this marriage proposal. But hearing her speak like that felt like a thorn lodged in his throat—he couldn’t swallow it down or spit it out. With a resigned sigh, he plopped down into a chair, cradling his head in his hands, frustration etched across his face. 0

Li Ziyi’s chest heaved with anger as he gasped for breath, finally unable to hold back any longer. “Even if you’re willing to marry me for my sake, you don’t have to be so considerate as to think about the possibility of me dismissing you?” He lifted his head and stared directly at Liu Yun, confusion and disbelief evident in his eyes. 0

“Ah?” Liu Yun suddenly realized that Li Ziyi’s emotions seemed off. She frowned slightly, a hint of worry flashing in her eyes. “Isn’t the prince angry because he has to marry me?” 0

Li Ziyi’s voice faltered; it felt like a bucket of cold water had been poured over him. 0

That’s right—why was he being so stubborn? It was perfectly normal for him to be unhappy about marrying a woman he didn’t like for no reason. But why did it seem like he was angry because she wanted him to dismiss her? 0

He shook his head, trying to untangle his chaotic thoughts. 0

But then again, she was just a shadow guard he had raised since childhood. Being named as a nominal consort would be an immense honor for her; surely no one would refuse such an opportunity? 0

But this girl would rather let him dismiss her than truly consider being his woman. Was he really so unworthy of someone’s lifelong devotion? 0

Yuan Xinrui had been overlooked because of Ren Siyang, and he hadn’t felt much about it at the time. But now, even Liu Yun was acting this way, and he truly began to doubt his own charm. 0

He had always thought that with power and looks, he would be irresistible. But what was the outcome? The more he thought about it, the angrier he became, and he slammed his fist on the table, causing the teacup to jump from the impact. 0
