As soon as the words left her mouth, Yun Zhi Yue regretted it. Nan Jing seemed to be made of water, and his tears flowed even more freely.
He sighed and pulled her into his embrace, awkwardly patting her back in a comforting manner. Yun Zhi Yue nestled against Nan Jing, a faint smile playing at the corners of her mouth, her arms tightly wrapped around his waist.
Once she had cried enough, Nan Jing took her home, fearing that if she faced her mother's scolding alone after their matchmaking session, it would only make things worse. He personally went inside to explain to her mother.
Having watched other people's children grow up, her mother had an endless fondness for Nan Jing. If it were anyone else who had misbehaved, it would have been a different story; with Nan Jing, everything could be resolved with just a few words.
"So, Nan Jing, are you willing to give Yun Zhi Yue a chance?" Lan Ying asked in surprise.
Yun Zhi Yue's mouth twitched. "Mom, I graduated from Kyoto University! My studies are not lacking; how can I be so undervalued?"
"Even if he is willing to give me a chance, I deserve it fairly! Ouch! Don’t hit my arm; it’s already red!"
Lan Ying shot her a sidelong glance. "You still have the nerve to mention your Kyoto University graduation? If you hadn’t said anything, I would have thought you graduated from staying at home!" She continued without hesitation, "No more nonsense; just go and study hard with Nan Jing. If I find out you have a fleeting interest in this..."
"Aunt Lan," she interjected, "I’ll keep an eye on her; don’t worry."
The fierce mother instantly transformed into a caring one. "Alright, alright! Thank you, Nan Jing! Come over to Aunt Lan’s house for dinner when you have time."
Nan Jing politely nodded and glanced at Yun Zhi Yue before taking his leave.
Once he was gone, Yun Zhi Yue asked, "Mom, since Nan Jing is single and you like him so much, why haven’t you thought about him as your son-in-law?"
Lan Ying didn’t even look back as she headed upstairs. "Flying in the sky and running on the ground are not the same species; they can’t come together."
Yun Zhi Yue pondered this for a moment. "That’s true; I’m a golden phoenix from the Yun Family while he’s just a beast—our personalities and interests are completely different."
Lan Ying paused on the stairs and turned with an odd expression. "What I mean is that you’re the one running on the ground."
Yun Zhi Yue replied cheekily, "That’s my real mom; there’s no escaping that."
Not knowing when her mission would be completed, she had to manage her own little life while busying herself with work. The Yun Family was large and prosperous; she could afford to take it easy since she was still the product of her parents' hard work in this life. She needed to put in some effort to maintain that.
It wouldn’t hurt to learn something good from Nan Jing while continuing to reel him in—falling completely in love with her would make collecting his soul much easier. Once she gathered all the shattered souls, it would save his life; who knew what kind of powerful figure might reward her with a grand gift?
With this mindset, Yun Zhi Yue was full of motivation as she began her first day of work.
She had been here many times, and the receptionist recognized her, calling out "Miss Yun" before letting her go up.
Familiar with the place, she took the elevator to Nan Jing's office. At the door, Assistant Huang Bin clearly knew she was coming for work and greeted her with a smile, "Secretary Yun, good to see you. President Nan is waiting inside."
Assistant Huang was pleasant, and they exchanged polite greetings, both unable to hold back their laughter in the end.
Pushing open the office door, she noticed the overall decor was in shades of gray—steady and understated—with subtle dark red accents that highlighted the owner's strong and aggressive personality, very much in line with Nan Jing's style.
As she entered, Nan Jing only glanced up for a moment before returning to whatever he was writing on the documents, his demeanor serious.
It was said that serious men were the most handsome, and Yun Zhi Yue indeed felt this way. She pulled out a chair and sat down quietly, waiting for him to finish his work.
His tailored suit accentuated a physique that could rival male models. From this angle, his chiseled jawline made her want to reach out and touch it.
Perhaps it was sheer audacity or perhaps infatuation; at that moment, her hand brushed against her own jawline, and Nan Jing was staring right at her.
After a brief awkward laugh, Yun Zhi Yue composed herself and joked, "You have some rice stuck on your face; no one dared to tell you? How embarrassing!"
"I didn't eat rice today," he replied.
