Yan Qing had just arrived in this city and had been living here for less than a month. Most of the time, he was either on business trips or at the research institute, rarely coming back to eat. He had only bought a washing machine to get by, so there was no refrigerator in the entire room, and even the kitchen lacked basic utensils—only a kettle and two bowls.
Anyone would find this situation quite unbelievable.
Previously, one of the rooms in the apartment had been filled with furniture and miscellaneous items belonging to Landlady Auntie, who had only moved out last month. So, Yan Qing had been living here alone until now.
Although the rent was slightly higher than similar places in the area, Landlady Auntie was very kind. Besides the room occupied by her belongings, she had given Yan Qing keys to all the other rooms. Little did he expect that he would soon have a roommate.
After some contemplation, Yan Qing decided it was time to buy some essentials since he intended to stay here long-term, especially now that there was another person around.
"Today is Saturday. If you have time later, let's go shopping together!" Yan Qing said, gently twisting his wrist with his left hand.
"Sure, I'll make a list," Jiang Ming replied with a nod before heading into his own room.
"Okay."
Once Jiang Ming left, Yan Qing looked at the bag of soup dumplings he had.
After a moment of silence, he picked one up and brought it to his mouth. In just five bites, he finished off all the dumplings.
At that moment, Jiang Ming emerged from his room with a piece of paper and a pen. He glanced curiously at Yan Qing when he saw the unopened sauce on the table.
Noticing Jiang Ming's look, Yan Qing quickly explained, "I don't eat spicy food."
Jiang Ming didn’t say anything further but sat down next to Yan Qing. He picked up the pen and began writing vigorously. Soon enough, he had jotted down six or seven lines of items they needed to buy and handed the list to Yan Qing.
"Take a look and see if there's anything else you need."
"That's enough."
Yan Qing quickly glanced around, not noticing anything missing, and handed it back.
Jiang Ming took the note, folded it twice with his right hand, and put it in his pocket. "Can we leave in ten minutes?"
Yan Qing replied, "Now works for me; I happen to be free."
After a brief tidy-up, the two of them headed out together.
Once downstairs, after Yan Qing threw away the trash, he turned to Jiang Ming. "Which one should we buy first?"
Jiang Ming said seriously, "Let's get a pot first!"
"Okay."
Following Jiang Ming into the mall, Yan Qing couldn't help but feel a bit dazed.
It seemed like a long time since he had come here with someone. The last time was ages ago, perhaps when he accompanied his sister shopping.
Lost in memories, Yan Qing momentarily zoned out.
"What's wrong with you?" Jiang Ming noticed Yan Qing's distracted expression and gently nudged him with his elbow.
"Nothing."
Yan Qing snapped back to reality, glanced at Jiang Ming, and offered a faint smile. "I haven't been to a mall in so long; I'm just a bit out of practice."
"Is that so? I haven't been here in a long time either. Let's take our time and explore today. Hey, look over there! It seems like there's a pot; let's go check it out."
With that, Jiang Ming strode confidently toward a large pot, waving for Yan Qing to follow him.
As the two approached, a sales representative eagerly came over to promote the cookware, introducing one model after another. In the end, they chose the most expensive one.
Meanwhile, in a small corner unnoticed by anyone, not far from where Yan Qing and Jiang Ming were discussing and selecting cookware, a burly man resembling an ox could not help but snap a photo of them. With a quick "click," he sent it to an unknown group chat.
Suddenly, the previously quiet chat erupted with messages.
"Uh... are they shopping together?"
"Damn, when did this guy start dating?"
"What’s going on? Is he out shopping with his wife?"
"What? Are you kidding? You must have edited that photo! Who would believe that Jiang Ming, that demon, would like a human? You must be joking."
"Experts confirm there are no signs of editing in the photo he posted."
"......"
"Whoa, quick! Send me a clearer version; I want to see which brave soul managed to tame this monster."
"I want one too! Me too!!!"
As the group continued their lively discussion, Jiang Ming had already pulled Yan Qing to the refrigerator section.
After a thorough analysis by Yan Qing, the two decided on a practical model and arranged for delivery the next day.
"See? I wasn't lying. This couple is already buying furniture and appliances. They must be getting married soon. Damn, that guy just got out two months ago, and they're already talking about marriage?"
The members of the group watched as Jiang Ming stood next to a man in front of the refrigerator, their eyes locked and smiles on their faces, as if filled with deep affection. Each person speculated silently among themselves.
Gradually, the atmosphere grew restless.
"Come on, keep up! I want to see more."
"I want to be on the front lines of this gossip! Black Bear, hurry up and take more pictures."
"Got it."
Just as Black Bear replied with those three words, he looked up to find Jiang Ming smiling right in front of him.
In an instant, from body to soul, Black Bear's expression froze before he could even hide it; he was completely petrified.
Jiang Ming snatched the phone from Black Bear's stubborn fingers, scrolled through the group messages, and then took a selfie with his face in ultra-high definition, posting it in the group chat.
The group fell silent immediately.
With a sudden "ding," a notification announced that someone had left the group. In an instant, only Black Bear remained in the chat, feeling utterly alone.
Watching the still-stiff black bear, Jiang Ming smiled and forcefully shoved the phone back into the petrified fingers of the other.
"Can you cook?" Yan Qing asked, holding a bag of freshly selected vegetables in his right hand while picking through other leafy greens with his left. He glanced at Jiang Ming, who had just returned from the restroom.
"I can cook a little. Why, can't you?"
"It's not that. I just think cooking is a waste of time and unnecessary. If you enjoy cooking, just remember to keep the kitchen clean; I can't stand the smell of grease."
Yan Qing straightened up and said to Jiang Ming, "I usually get back quite late. If you have time, could you please feed my cat? It has a bit of a temper."
"Sure thing. Did you buy cat food?" Jiang Ming readily agreed. "We should get some now; we're out at home."
"Alright."
The two of them wove through the mall, attracting many curious glances. Their striking appearances made several passersby look twice.
When they finally returned home with several large bags, Yan Qing's phone chimed with a new message.
