Before him lay an empty expanse.
Yan Qing gripped his Silver Spear, scanning the surroundings warily, but found nothing amiss. The tip of his thermal sensor remained unchanged, leaving Yan Qing puzzled. Could it be that the recent stress had led to some sort of hallucination?
After confirming that his thermal sensor was functioning properly, he tucked it back behind his waist and began to walk away slowly.
At that moment, just as Yan Qing was leaving, a few drops of water suddenly fell onto the ground behind him, spreading into several faint circles.
In the early hours of the morning, Yan Qing arrived at the alley as agreed, but the driver refused to go any further. He kindly warned, “Young man, there’s a haunted house inside. What are you going there for? I’m telling you, it’s not a good place. You should leave.”
Yan Qing paid no heed to the warning. He pulled out a talisman from his pocket and waved it slightly, a faint smile on his lips as he replied, “I’m going to work, to exorcise some ghosts.”
The driver’s eyes widened in disbelief as he scrutinized Yan Qing from head to toe, his gaze seemingly saying that people in this line of work were getting younger by the day!
Yan Qing stepped out of the car and walked with determination deeper into Xing Yu Alley.
A thin mist enveloped the night, with only the bright moonlight illuminating his path.
The entire Xinghua Rain Alley had been reduced to a dilapidated shadow under the relentless march of history.
In the dead of night, a cold wind swept through the alleyway, carrying with it a haunting sound that intensified the eerie atmosphere.
According to the information displayed on his device, this area was one of the better-preserved sites from the Late Qing Scenic Area. Aside from a few tourists during peak seasons, most of the time it was inhabited by elderly residents.
After this incident occurred, due to the predominance of elderly residents nearby, there had been no widespread publicity in society to avoid causing panic.
As Yan Qing finished reading the messages transmitted through the device and tucked it away, he caught sight of a vague figure emerging from the mist not far ahead.
Just as he intended to approach and inquire, the figure suddenly moved further away. Doubtful, Yan Qing immediately quickened his pace to follow.
The figure was clearly that of an adult man, and his sudden appearance here raised many suspicions.
Yan Qing followed the shadow as it twisted and turned, sometimes appearing just within reach, yet he could never touch it.
In the blink of an eye, the shadow vanished, only to reappear a short distance ahead, seemingly waiting for him at a leisurely pace.
After following the shadow through the alley for a while, Yan Qing noticed it suddenly stop at a corner up ahead, then disappear again as it turned.
Cautiously, Yan Qing drew the gun tucked at his waist, gripping it tightly with both hands as he pressed against the wall, taking careful steps on the cobblestones.
With a swift turn, he shouted, "Don't move!"
Fireworks, Streamers, and Box: "???!"
"Pfft, brother Ting Yu, are you planning an ambush?" Fireworks couldn't help but pull out the lollipop from his mouth and said.
Noticing Yan Qing's vigilance, Box asked, "What did you see?"
"There was a shadow. I chased after it," Yan Qing replied.
Streamers looked puzzled. "A shadow?"
"Yes, I followed it here," Yan Qing confirmed.
Box pondered for a moment. "This must be a prank. It just led you here without causing you any harm, right?"
Yan Qing nodded. "Yes, there was definitely no attack."
"If it's a prank, we'll deal with it later. Let's get him in line first," Fireworks said, pointing at the Old House in front of them. "This ghost is up next."
With a playful tone, Ribbons chimed in, "Right, no cutting in line."
Yan Qing and Box couldn't help but laugh at their banter.
The four of them stood outside, quietly gazing at the Old House.
Number 46 Xing Yu Alley was a mansion built by a Tao Family Tycoon in the early 20th century. The entire structure primarily showcased Chinese Style, but European architectural decorations were also evident throughout, creating an elegant yet lavish atmosphere.
As Yan Qing pushed open the door, she saw a withered willow tree standing by the pond in the center of the yard, shrouded in nighttime mist.
Strangely, the entire tree was pitch black, with sparse, dry branches. The yard should have appeared desolate and dusty, but it seemed otherwise.
Yan Qing blinked and looked again through the large door adorned with two tiger rings. To her astonishment, the dead tree appeared to come back to life, its branches turning green and tender buds sprouting, all happening in an instant.
Moreover, a thick layer of White Mist began to rise within the courtyard, gradually obscuring the scene before them and making it difficult to discern the changes taking place.
"Did that tree just come back to life?!" Fireworks exclaimed incredulously. "And it's releasing smoke bombs?"
"Is this... normal?" Box said, puzzled. "Ordinary Ability Users don't have such powers."
Yan Qing furrowed her brow. "The target is only B Level, but this ability resembles something above A Rank."
"It's been a few days since we obtained his exact information; it's possible that he evolved in a short time. But this is too unbelievable!" Ribbons said, surprised. "If we consider that he might have evolved due to significant external stimuli, what could that trigger be?"
Yan Qing calmly surveyed the Tao Family courtyard and said, "Whatever it is, let's go inside and take a look."
The crowd followed Yan Qing's gaze and realized that they had not yet crossed the threshold.
"Ah, I'll go first. What's the big deal?" Yan Huo said, stepping forward without hesitation.
"Yan Huo!"
"What is this thing?"
As soon as Yan Huo took that step, she instantly vanished into the mist. However, upon closer inspection, everything seemed normal.
"I'm going in to find her," Yan Qing declared, striding toward the direction where Yan Huo had disappeared.
"Hey, wait!"
Before they could stop Yan Qing, they could only watch helplessly as he walked away, leaving the colorful ribbons and box behind to exchange glances.
Moments later, the two decided to enter the eerie and strange Tao Family Courtyard together.
From outside the Tao Family gate, as soon as they stepped inside, they too vanished into the thick fog like Yan Qing and Yan Huo.
At that moment, the once silent entrance was left empty, while the Tao Residence gate slowly creaked shut with a heavy sound.
