In the early hours of the next day, everyone gathered at the entrance of Xing Yu Alley.
Yanhua looked around at the buildings; there were many alleys, making it easy to get lost. Just yesterday, she had managed to find her way to Tao Residence thanks to the box and the ribbons. If she were to wander around by herself now, she would surely not find her way back.
Yan Qing began to recall the path they had taken while following the shadow from yesterday. "Follow me," he said.
Without hesitation, everyone fell in step behind Yan Qing.
The alley exuded an ancient charm typical of Jiangnan, its poetic scenery reminiscent of an ink wash painting, refreshing to the spirit.
However, the night in Xing Yu Alley was cold and eerie, with the willow trees swaying by the riverbank and occasional dog barks echoing through the air, creating a rather somber atmosphere.
Yanhua, with her high ponytails bobbing as she peered around, grew impatient. "It's been ten minutes already, Brother Ting Yu. Are you sure we’re not lost?"
"We're not lost. Just turn around the next two corners and we’ll be there."
"Alright then."
Caidai walked ahead of Hezi, admiring the ancient scenery as they strolled. "This place is quite beautiful," she said, running her fingers along the old wall. Turning back to Hezi with a playful grin, she added, "Once we finish this business, let’s go out and explore somewhere fun."
Hezi smiled in response. "Sounds good."
Yanhua rolled her eyes and muttered under her breath, "All this dog food being fed along the way is just too much."
Seeing the single dog ahead of her, Yanhua decided to distance herself from the couple behind and rushed over to Yan Qing's side. She poked him and said, "Hey, can you walk faster? I can't take it anymore."
Yan Qing heard everything and smiled lightly as he led Yanhua around a corner. "Just ahead is where we exit."
Upon hearing this, Yanhua immediately abandoned Yan Qing and hurried out of the narrow alley.
Yan Qing also moved toward the light ahead but suddenly stopped just two meters from exiting the alley.
He turned around and seriously regarded the old alleyway that still carried the earthy scent of rain-soaked soil. Suddenly, he pulled out a photograph from his pocket.
The background of the photo was exactly this place.
This is the place where Jiang Wenyu and Tao Yiran took their photo together.
Recalling the blank pages, Yan Qing thought that this might be the only photo they had left of them now.
No wonder one had to pass through here to enter Mindset; this was likely a place only Tao Yiran would know.
Gazing at the alley, Yan Qing averted her eyes and withdrew the yellowed photograph from her hand.
Box and Ribbon looked at Yan Qing, puzzled by a series of strange actions, and asked, "What are you looking at?"
Taking out the photograph, Yan Qing handed it to Box, pointing at the dim alley in the picture. "Look at the background in this photo and here."
Box took the photograph, and Ribbon leaned in as well. The two of them looked at the photo together, then followed Yan Qing's gesture to look back at the alley.
After a while.
"I see," Box said. "In the end, she is waiting for Tao Yiran; no one else can enter."
Ribbon sighed as well. "We should tell her sooner that Tao Yiran is dead; she is too pitiful."
"Hey, hey, hey, why aren't you coming over yet?"
The lingering smoke was still shouting loudly as they stood at the mouth of the alley. "Hurry up and go in! As long as we tell Jiang Wenyu that Tao Yiran is dead and arrest her, our mission will be complete."
This time, the four pushed open the door of the Tao Family Mansion and entered together.
As soon as they stepped inside, they found themselves in the empty courtyard of the Tao Family.
The cultural atmosphere here was very reminiscent of Jiangnan, so none of them expected it to start snowing.
Snowflakes filled the sky, falling like goose feathers. The cold air seemed to allow each of them to feel that woman's loneliness and desolation.
Jiang Wenyu wore a plain-colored qipao with a thin shawl draped over her shoulders. Her fingers were as white as tender green onions as they lightly touched the nearby rockery.
"I've waited for you for seven years, will you come back?"
The four of them, due to their vantage point, could see Jiang Wenyu's every move, but she was unaware of their presence.
After a long moment, Jiang Wenyu finally withdrew her cold fingers and brought them to her lips, breathing warm air onto them.
Yan Qing glanced at her and said, "Jiang Wenyu is truly pitiful, waiting all this time. We should go wake her up."
Yan Qing held onto Yan Huo's sleeve, keeping her gaze fixed on Jiang Wenyu from a distance. "Let's wait a bit longer. Tao Yiran will be back soon. We need to understand the whole situation before we can judge her."
Yan Huo turned back, concerned. "Is that really a good idea? She’s been living in a dream where her husband, whom she waited seven years for, hands her a divorce notice. Isn’t that a bit cruel?"
Yan Qing continued to watch Jiang Wenyu in the distance. "Cruelty aside, we only know Tao Yiran's side of the story from what Tao Zhe told us. We haven’t heard Jiang Wenyu’s perspective yet. Let’s not forget who our target is."
The box chimed in, "Exactly. We need to understand the entire situation; we can't just make judgments based on Tao Zhe's one-sided account."
Cai Dai patted Yan Huo on the shoulder. "Sister, don’t be too troubled. Let’s keep watching; we might see something else that could help us apply for a reduced sentence for her later."
Yan Huo fell silent, accepting this course of action.
With the three of them silently agreeing with Yan Qing's approach, they began to find ways to avoid Jiang Wenyu's line of sight.
