He thought he would never see her again, but an unexpected twist of fate brought them together. Just a few days later, in a restaurant, Tao Yiran saw the girl again.
"Excuse me, are you Mr. Tao Yiran?"
As he watched the girl walk in and ascend the stairs, it wasn't until she sat down across from him that Tao Yiran snapped back to reality.
"Yes, that's me. May I ask who you are?"
"Hello, I'm Jiang Wenyu."
Her bright and radiant face was always adorned with a warm smile that made one feel a flutter in their heart. As the young woman extended her right hand in a friendly gesture, Tao Yiran realized that her delicate wrist was indeed as fair as snow.
"We've met before, Miss Jiang. Do you remember?" Tao Yiran stood up to shake hands with Jiang Wenyu.
Sitting across from him, Jiang Wenyu beamed, "I remember! Thank you so much, Mr. Tao."
"It's a bit late to say thank you now, Miss Jiang."
Jiang Wenyu smiled awkwardly and asked, "So what can I do to show my gratitude to Mr. Tao?"
"Marry me."
Jiang Wenyu's motion of sipping tea suddenly froze, and her smile faded as she looked at Tao Yiran across the table. Since their conversation began, he had worn a half-smile on his face, leaving her unsure if his words were serious.
"This is the identity I've arranged for you."
Upon hearing this, Jiang Wenyu's expression softened, and she smiled again. "Oh, I see! So when are we getting married?"
Seemingly caught off guard by this turn of events, Tao Yiran paused for a moment but quickly regained his composure and chuckled as he picked up his cup of hot tea and blew on it. "That depends on you, Miss Jiang."
The two exchanged smiles at this. Then Tao Yiran ordered their meals, and they began to chat joyfully.
In truth, the identity Tao Yiran had arranged for Jiang Wenyu was that of someone who had saved him abroad and become sworn siblings to facilitate his mission in N City without raising suspicion. However, upon realizing that this person was Jiang Wenyu, he changed his mind.
As their conversation drew to a close, they agreed to return to N City together the following day.
“Master Tao, I’m here.”
Seeing Jiang Wenyu waving at her, Tao Yiran smiled faintly and made her way through the crowded area toward her.
“Miss Jiang, is something wrong? You’re half an hour late; the train is about to depart.”
Jiang Wenyu smiled apologetically, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear. With her back to the midday sun, she explained to Tao Yiran, “I’m sorry. I had to report our decision to the organization. Since I’ve never taken on such a task before, they were a bit worried about me. They spent quite some time trying to reassure me just now.”
Tao Yiran took the suitcase from Jiang Wenyu’s hands. “I see. It’s getting late; let’s board the train.” Jiang Wenyu followed behind Tao Yiran as they entered a spacious and quiet carriage.
“Miss Jiang, for the sake of our future work, I think we should establish some rules in advance.”
“Please go ahead; I will comply.”
Tao Yiran adjusted her Golden Wire Rim Glasses and placed a box on the table. “I can offer help within my capabilities for Miss Jiang, but I hope you won’t bring any trouble to the Tao Family.”
Jiang Wenyu was taken aback for a moment but quickly replied, “Of course not. You can rest assured.”
With a smile in her eyes, Tao Yiran nudged the box on the table and raised an eyebrow. “I trust you, Miss Jiang. But aren’t you curious about what’s inside?”
Tao Yiran was refined and polite, exuding an air of scholarly elegance mixed with Western aristocratic pride. Dressed in the latest fashion for men, he lightly tapped the exquisitely wrapped box, prompting Jiang Wenyu to open it with some hesitation.
The box's beauty and luxury left Jiang Wenyu speechless, but she was even more stunned by the expensive green glass bracelet inside. Soon after, she looked at Tao Yiran with questioning eyes. “Master Tao, what does this mean? I can’t accept such an expensive gift!”
“When I went abroad for studies, my mother told me that I needed to bring home a wife and give this to her so that when she returned, my mother would recognize her at a glance.” As he spoke, Tao Yiran glanced at Jiang Wenyu with a meaningful smile. “Don’t misunderstand; this is something my mother left for her daughter-in-law. For the sake of our mission not being exposed, I can only lend it to you temporarily.”
Jiang Wenyu awkwardly closed the box. “I see. I’m truly sorry for troubling you, Master Tao. You can rest assured that I will take good care of this bracelet.”
“Make sure you do.” Tao Yiran seemed to remember something else. “Oh, by the way, when we get to my place, you can’t call me that anymore.”
Jiang Wenyu was puzzled. “Then how should I address you?”
“Call me by my name—Yiran.”
“Hmm. Yiran.”
“......” Tao Yiran was taken aback by Jiang Wenyu's spontaneous remark, but soon she smiled again. “Yes, that’s how you should call me.”
Jiang Wenyu laughed. “If I call you Yiran, then you should call me Wenyu. That’s what my friends all call me.”
Tao Yiran's lips curled into a smile. “Alright, Wenyu.”
After spending a whole day and night on the train, the two finally arrived in N City.
As soon as they got off the train, Jiang Wenyu was spotted by Mrs. Tao, who had sharp eyes. She noticed the bracelet on his wrist and pulled him aside to chatter incessantly. Even when they returned to the Tao Residence, Mrs. Tao still seemed to have endless things to say.
Tao Yiran watched all of this with a smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
Observing the suddenly lively atmosphere at home and thinking about how war would soon reach this place, Tao Yiran's gentle gaze gradually hardened.
Time was running short; he and Jiang Wenyu needed to deal with this major trouble quickly.
During their first month in N City, Tao Yiran took Jiang Wenyu to several banquets, gathering a wealth of information.
Among the intel was news regarding a bank jointly established with R Country.
