As Jiang Wenyu's suppressed sobs grew louder, tears streamed down the sides of her face.
Tao Yiran, realizing what was happening, slapped himself and moved to the far side of the car seat. "I'm sorry, I was just too worried about you."
Jiang Wenyu's cries became uncontrollable, her voice softening. "You’re blaming me? You told them we’re getting married next month! I didn’t even know, and you didn’t bother to inform me in advance!"
With that, Jiang Wenyu burst into tears again, her voice escalating.
Tao Yiran paused for a moment at Jiang Wenyu's words but quickly replied, "Aren't you my fiancée now? We agreed on a fake marriage; you consented to it. I just changed the date and hadn’t had the chance to tell you yet. Why are you so angry?"
His tone suddenly slowed and deepened. "Do you really need to decide to be mad at me too?"
Hearing Tao Yiran's voice, Jiang Wenyu turned back, her voice choked with tears. "I didn’t mean to; it’s just... I was discovered by him, and that made me think about wanting to... to kill him."
Seeing Jiang Wenyu crying so hard she could barely breathe, Tao Yiran felt a pang of sympathy. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a handkerchief, offering it to her.
Jiang Wenyu, still buried in her arms and sobbing, noticed Tao Yiran’s gesture. She sniffled and lifted her head, glancing at the handkerchief in front of her before quickly stealing it from his hand with red-rimmed eyes.
Tao Yiran suddenly chuckled.
After wiping her tears a few times, Jiang Wenyu murmured through her stuffy nose, "What are you laughing at?"
"Nothing."
Tao Yiran turned his head away, maintaining a polite demeanor while deliberately avoiding looking at Jiang Wenyu’s disheveled appearance.
After a moment of silence, Tao Yiran finally spoke up, "Let's get out of the car; it's getting late."
Jiang Wenyu glanced out the window and realized it was indeed late; the entire Xing Yu Alley was shrouded in darkness.
"Mm," Jiang Wenyu replied, opening the car door and stepping onto the cobblestone path marked with shadows from the trees. He prepared to cross the dimly lit alley towards the Tao Family's entrance.
A chill evening breeze swept through the alley, adding to the eerie atmosphere amplified by distant dog barks.
For a moment, Jiang Wenyu wasn't paying much attention to where he was stepping.
"Be careful."
Recently, a stone slab in the alley near his home had become loose, and he hadn't had the chance to get it fixed. Tao Yiran, still shaken from earlier events, had forgotten to warn Jiang Wenyu.
As luck would have it, Jiang Wenyu stepped right on it.
Fortunately, Tao Yiran had been walking behind him. Just as Jiang Wenyu was about to collide with the wall, she reached out and steadied him, preventing an accident.
Feeling the warmth of Tao Yiran's hand gripping his arm, Jiang Wenyu looked up nervously and softly said, "Thank you."
Tao Yiran gazed at Jiang Wenyu, her eyes glistening with unshed tears that sparkled like stars. Her lips were tightly pressed together, as if she had endured great distress.
Her heart raced as she swallowed hard. After a moment of struggle, she finally released her grip on Jiang Wenyu's arm and turned her head away. "You're welcome. Just be careful and follow me."
In the dimly lit alley, fragrant scents wafted through the air, and shadows danced among the trees. A man walked ahead, with a woman closely following behind. The narrow path soon led them to its end.
Mrs. Tao couldn’t help but feel that her daughter-in-law and son’s relationship had taken on a slightly ambiguous tone.
Just the other day, while having dinner, they had both reached for the same dish, their faces turning red as they shyly pushed it toward each other.
“Here, take it,” he offered.
“Oh, no. You should eat it,” she replied.
Even when it came to giving his wife a pair of earrings, he was hesitant and stammering.
Jiang Wenyu blushed and quietly asked, “Do they look good?”
Tao Yiran adjusted her glasses, blinking with slightly flushed cheeks as she softly replied, “They look good.”
Even though they were on the verge of marriage, they still acted like innocent lovers who blushed at the mere sight of each other.
Carrying out her mission here felt just like what she had done in the past—after completing her task in S City, she would quietly disappear into the crowd.
But this time in N City, she had only one hiding place—the Tao Residence.
To avoid drawing attention, she always took this small alley to enter the Tao Family’s home, steering clear of prying eyes.
“Who’s there?”
In the shadow before her, there seemed to be a figure, slender yet remarkably upright.
The figure stirred slightly and gradually emerged from the darkness, approaching Jiang Wenyu.
Jiang Wenyu took a small step back, remaining silent, while green light began to gather at her fingertips. Just as she was about to flick her hand forward to throw it, she caught sight of a familiar face on that figure.
“Yiran?” A hint of fear washed over Jiang Wenyu as she quickly retracted the green light behind her, realizing how close she had come to...
But putting that aside, how did he end up here?
Jiang Wenyu felt a wave of confusion. “What are you doing here?”
Tao Yiran adjusted his collar and pushed up his glasses, explaining, “I was waiting for you. I noticed you hadn’t returned for a while and started to worry.”
He had expressed concern for her many times before and even waited outside at night. What was his reason for this?
Jiang Wenyu gazed intently into Tao Yiran's eyes, as if trying to discern something deeper.
Tao Yiran felt flustered under her scrutiny and cleared his throat to mask his discomfort. “Let’s head back; it’s getting cold.”
“Okay,” Jiang Wenyu replied softly.
This time, it wasn’t about attending a banquet; it was about sneaking in to retrieve something, which carried a certain level of danger. Tao Yiran didn’t need to accompany her on this risky endeavor; it wasn’t his responsibility. His role was simply to provide accurate intelligence for her.
As for supporting her during such a perilous task, that fell outside his scope of work.
Why was he waiting for her?
Lost in thought, Jiang Wenyu accidentally bumped into Tao Zhe's back.
"Uh." Jiang Wenyu stopped and rubbed her forehead.
Tao Zhe also paused, looking at the Jiang Wenyu who was so close to him, and asked with concern, "Are you okay?"
Jiang Wenyu didn’t think much of it; it was just a small bump. She replied, "I'm fine."
Tao Zhe gazed at Jiang Wenyu, his eyes deepening. He lowered his gaze to meet hers, placing his right hand over the one she was using to rub her forehead, and softly asked, "Then how do you think I am?"
In that moment, Jiang Wenyu froze as Tao Zhe's hand covered hers. When she heard him speak, she instinctively responded, "I'm fine."
Tao Zhe smiled.
Realizing what had just happened, Jiang Wenyu felt her face flush.
What had she just said?
