The high-hanging red lantern, adorned with the festive character for "happiness," looked vastly different from when Yan Qing had first seen it.
Last time, the lantern had been entwined with withered black branches, giving it a disheveled and dilapidated appearance.
Something felt off.
"What’s wrong, Brother Ting Yu?" Yan Qing's gaze was fixed on a particular spot, and Yan Qing's expression was one of confusion.
"Don't you think this lantern looks a bit strange?" Yan Qing asked.
Box was puzzled. "What's strange about it? Hasn't this lantern always been hanging here?"
"Exactly. Since we entered this illusion, the lantern has always been here. It's only now that Jiang Wenyu and Tao Yiran's wedding date is approaching that the character for happiness has been added."
With her arms crossed, Ribbon stepped forward a couple of paces to look at the spot Yan Qing was observing. "But if you say this lantern is strange, I also find it a bit odd. Why is there only one lantern hanging? Usually, weddings have pairs of lanterns, especially in big families where customs are respected. It seems out of place to have just one lantern hanging."
Fireworks, with a lollipop in her mouth, tilted her head in confusion.
This lantern did indeed seem somewhat out of place. Since they couldn't find a way to break this illusion anyway, they might as well investigate this lantern.
With that thought in mind, Fireworks swiftly stepped forward, leaping onto a nearby pillar and effortlessly snatching the lantern down.
Holding the red lantern, she glanced at it and thought there was nothing particularly strange about it.
"This is just an ordinary red lantern. What's so weird about it?"
Box, Ribbon, and Yan Qing all stepped closer to examine the lantern from different angles. They almost bumped into Jiang Wenyu in the process and quickly ducked out of sight.
Yan Qing picked up the red lantern, examining it closely. After a moment of contemplation, he pulled out the wedding invitation from behind him and held it over the flame.
"What are you doing?"
Seeing this, the Fire Spirit reached out to stop Yan Qing, but Yan Qing was quicker; the red invitation was already half consumed by the flames.
The others were still hiding behind a door, and perhaps because Jiang Wenyu rarely visited, the interior of the house was sparsely decorated, as if cobbled together from memories.
The flames ignited the red invitation, and the nearby box and ribbons caught the scent of burning. They moved closer to see Yan Qing's actions, their eyes wide with shock.
"What are you doing burning that red invitation? It’s an important piece of evidence from when you entered the Mindset!"
The box’s face turned pale as it reached out a hand, but the red invitation had already been completely incinerated.
Yan Qing lowered his gaze slightly, looking at the remnants of the burning invitation in his hand. He spoke slowly, "Everyone, haven’t you noticed that our surroundings have changed?"
His words caused the thoughts of the three present to come to a halt. They turned around in confusion and realized that their environment had indeed transformed.
Fragments of the illusion began to reassemble; the house shattered and then started to meld back together with the walls. The perspective shifted, and a new chapter of the story began.
"Mr. Tanaka, I remember telling you not to come looking for me at my home."
Tao Yiran stood coldly at the entrance of Tao Family Mansion, looking down from a nearby alley at the figure standing before him from R Country.
Tanaka smiled and bowed slightly, speaking in broken Chinese, "Don't be so heartless, Mr. Tao. You are a close friend of our general. Thanks to your help, the bank we established in N City was able to go public so quickly. We really appreciate it."
Tao Yiran's face remained cold. "Enough. Just get to the point."
"I just enjoy talking to smart people," Tanaka said as he stepped forward, attempting to pat Tao Yiran on the arm, only to have Tao Yiran turn away and block him.
Tanaka's smile faltered for a moment but quickly returned as he withdrew his hand and continued, "Mr. Tao, it's been a long time. Isn't it about time you stopped pretending with Ms. Jiang? Hand her over to us, and your task will be complete."
"Hand her over to you?"
Tao Yiran straightened up and scoffed, "I've married her; how can you R Country people still think about taking someone else's woman? I advise you to abandon that thought—she's not someone you can control."
His gaze was as cold as winter ice, radiating a chilling intensity directed at Tanaka.
Tanaka's expression shifted instantly; his smile twisted into a sneer as he turned away disdainfully. "Don't say I didn't warn you, Mr. Tao. Your Mrs. Tao is not a woman you can keep in check. You'd better give up on her sooner rather than later."
"Give up on her?" Tao Yiran walked forward along the bluestone path, then turned his head coldly and replied, "Impossible."
The moon hung high in the sky, and a cold wind swept through the willow trees lining the ancient alleyway, causing the branches to sway gracefully. Jiang Wenyu, hidden in the shadows, quickly turned to shield herself.
Tao Yiran did not notice her; they were separated by just a wall.
