Tanaka angrily kicked the moss-covered wall behind him and turned away in frustration.
"Wenyu, why aren't you eating? This is the chicken soup I had the servants make for you today. You've been working hard every night on your missions, haven't you?"
Tao Yiran gently blew on the spoon he held, then scooped up a spoonful and brought it to Jiang Wenyu's lips.
Jiang Wenyu remained silent, her indifferent gaze fixed on Tao Yiran. After a long moment, the smile that had been lingering at the corner of Tao Yiran's mouth faded awkwardly.
Setting the bowl down on the nearby table, Tao Yiran reached out and took Jiang Wenyu's hands in his, asking softly, "What's wrong? Was today's mission not successful? Why are you looking at me like that? Is there something on my face?"
Tao Yiran leaned in too close, just half a finger's distance from Jiang Wenyu, causing her ears to flush red as she quickly turned her head away.
"It's nothing, I'm just a bit tired today."
Jiang Wenyu gently brushed Tao Yiran's hand away and pulled the covers tightly around herself, curling up inside.
Tao Yiran watched as Jiang Wenyu pushed his hand away and then turned to lie under the covers, leaving him with a slender silhouette.
"Are you unhappy today?" Tao Yiran leaned closer to her ear and whispered.
Jiang Wenyu's eyelashes brushed against her cheek as she replied with a faint shadow of emotion, "It's nothing. It's just that in R Country today, they buried quite a few bombs underground. I almost got blown up."
Upon hearing this, Tao Yiran immediately adopted a worried expression and rushed forward to pull back the covers and Jiang Wenyu's nightgown. "Did you get hurt anywhere? Is it serious? Let me see."
"Don't! Don't do that," Jiang Wenyu shrank back into the corner but was still held down by Tao Yiran.
After lifting her nightgown and seeing that her fair skin bore no marks or injuries, Tao Yiran finally withdrew his hand and lay down behind her, wrapping his arms tightly around her.
Moments later, Tao Yiran lowered his voice and said, "Wenyu, I'm really worried about you. It's too dangerous for you to carry out these tasks every day. How about this... you stay home from now on, and I'll take care of you?"
Jiang Wenyu's rosy face, which had been adorned with a gentle smile, froze. She turned slightly in Tao Yiran's embrace, looking into his eyes without saying a word, her red lips pressed together.
"Do you think it's good for me to stay at home?"
Her voice was soft, but Tao Yiran heard her clearly. "Of course it is. That way, you won't have to do such dangerous things. I worry about you every day, afraid that the next time I see you might be the last."
Jiang Wenyu spoke softly yet firmly, "But if I don't go, who will carry out the missions? Our compatriots are still suffering; we can't just irresponsibly walk away and betray their trust and that of the organization."
Tao Yiran frowned. "The organization? What are you thinking? With war about to break out between R Country and our nation, I've already planned to take you and your family to M Country to live."
It was as if she was seeing another side of him for the first time. Jiang Wenyu pushed Tao Yiran away in disbelief.
Seeing his conversation with Tanaka at the door had already disappointed her enough, but she still hadn’t reported this to the organization.
Because if she did, they would surely make her eliminate him herself.
She couldn’t bring herself to kill the person she cared for.
And betraying her organization and her people was something she could never do.
Jiang Wenyu fell silent, her starry eyes glistening with unshed tears as she took one last look at Tao Yiran before turning away without another word.
Tao Yiran spoke a lot after that, but Jiang Wenyu ignored him completely, and eventually, he fell silent as well.
For the first time, a rift began to form between them.
Recently, Old Madam Tao discovered that her son seemed to have had a quarrel with his wife.
"Come, come, Wenyu, this is your favorite dish. Ao Ran specifically asked me to buy these for you. You must try some," Old Madam Tao said as she served the food.
"Ao Ran! You've been so busy with work lately; you should take a break. Our family isn't short on money. You need to spend more time with Wenyu! Look at her, she's lost weight recently."
Old Madam Tao reached for more food but was blocked by Tao Yiran's chopsticks.
"Mom, I'm done eating," Tao Yiran and Jiang Wenyu said in unison.
The two of them placed their bowls and chopsticks on the table and walked away back to back.
"Hey? What's going on with you two?" Old Madam Tao said, clutching her handkerchief, glancing left and right. By now, they had walked far away without looking back at her.
"Are you sure?" Tao Yiran sat at his desk, staring at the papers in disbelief.
Jiang Wenyu was actually...
Tanaka's chubby face broke into a smile that obscured his eyes. "Mr. Tao, this is true. We intercepted information from the Fire Phoenix Organization. Your Madam Jiang is one of the leaders of the Fire Phoenix Organization; you must hand her over to us."
Now things had become complicated. Jiang Wenyu was a leader of the Fire Phoenix Organization; why hadn't she told him about this sooner?
With a whirlwind of emotions surging within him, Tao Yiran looked up and crouched down to place the documents directly into the safe.
"Mr. Tanaka, I stand by my word: my wife, Mrs. Tao, cannot be given to you." Tao Yiran straightened his back and slowly stood up.
"You, how could you..." Tanaka exclaimed, his finger pointing angrily at him.
This person continued to challenge his patience time and again.
"But I can hand over a Jiang Wenyu," Tao Yiran said calmly and indifferently.
Tanaka retracted his finger, furrowing his brow in thought. "Are you saying..."
Tao Yiran nodded.
The flesh on Tanaka's chubby face jiggled as he laughed.
At the same moment, in the Tao Residence, the bracelet on Jiang Wenyu's wrist glowed green and slowly rotated.
Watching the familiar figure in the mirror, tears quietly fell from the corners of Jiang Wenyu's eyes.
If she hadn't used the Ability Mirror on Tao Yiran that day, it would have been incredibly difficult for her to let go of him.
She had thought he was her comrade walking alongside her, the man she admired, but little did she know he was a traitor hiding among them.
Even their initial encounter and the bond they shared were likely part of his elaborate scheme.
