“Wenyu, do you have anything planned for tomorrow?” Tao Yiran asked as he walked into the house, finding Jiang Wenyu sitting blankly in a chair. Her expression was vacant, as if her thoughts had drifted far away.
Jiang Wenyu slowly turned her neck, her gaze cold as she looked him up and down. “You’re back,” she said.
Tao Yiran immediately noticed the tear stains at the corners of her eyes, which were particularly prominent.
“What’s wrong? Did something happen?” He maintained his usual poise, leaning down to whisper gently in her ear. Yet, at that moment, his heart felt as if it had been sliced by a sharp blade.
“It’s nothing,” Jiang Wenyu hurriedly stood up and rubbed her eyes vigorously. “Just some mosquitoes from the courtyard accidentally flew into my eyes. It’s fine now.” She forced a smile at him, and Tao Yiran snapped back to reality.
“Alright then, let’s go to Cui Xian Tower. I’ve reserved a table there and invited my mother. Let’s all go and enjoy a meal together.”
“Okay.”
Cui Xian Tower was a famous century-old restaurant in City N, attracting diners from all directions each day, all eager to savor its delicious dishes.
Recently, however, the situation in City N had been tumultuous, leading many to choose to stay indoors. Yet Tao Yiran had decided to book a meal outside.
At the dining table, Jiang Wenyu and Tao Yiran exchanged few words. Tao Old Madam watched them closely, feeling anxious. She raised her wine glass towards Jiang Wenyu and Tao Yiran.
“What’s going on with you two lately? You seem to be ignoring this old woman. Come on, today let’s forget everything else. I’ll toast to you both; you must give me a big fat grandson next year.”
As Tao Old Madam toasted, Jiang Wenyu stared at the liquid in her glass that shimmered with a hint of green light. She paused for a moment—had they really come to this point?
“Why aren’t you drinking, Wenyu?”
Without much thought, she downed the drink in her cup at the urging of Old Madam Tao.
After a few rounds of drinks, she woke up to the sound of honking cars.
"Mr. Tao, you can't let her go."
Tanaka's plump figure blocked the headlights.
"Why not? I've given you so much money; is buying her life not enough?" Tao Yiran's dark eyes concealed a hint of menace.
He didn't want to put Mr. Tao in such a difficult position, but he had just received an urgent telegram from above. This Ms. Jiang was an Ability User, and they could not afford to miss this excellent opportunity for research on Ability Users.
Tanaka hesitated and raised his hand to stop him. "Mr. Tao, let's consider our previous contract void! Even if you inform General Iekawa, it won't matter; neither he nor I will let Ms. Jiang leave City N."
Tao Yiran's face darkened as he shot him a glance. "Tell me the reason; why did you change your mind at the last minute?"
Tanaka replied, "No reason; it's best if you don't know the details."
Jiang Wenyu leaned against her head, peering through the glass of the car door to see Tao Yiran and Tanaka in a standoff.
All around them were soldiers from Country R, armed and with shadowy eyes, fixated on Tao Yiran, unmoving.
"Mr. Tao, my patience is limited; don't push me any further."
Tanaka pulled out a handgun from behind and aimed it at Tao Yiran's feet, firing a shot.
"Bang."
Tao Yiran was startled, quickly retracting his hand and glaring fiercely at Tanaka.
"How dare you..."
Tanaka coldly replied, "I consulted General Iekawa about this operation. He said that if you refuse to cooperate when necessary, we can eliminate you."
In the next moment, Tanaka aimed his handgun at Tao Yiran's chest and pulled the trigger, the bullet flying swiftly towards him.
However, the anticipated collapse did not occur. Instead, a surge of Azure Green Branches erupted from the ground in front of Tao Yiran, blocking the bullet.
The green willows were exceptionally vibrant, appearing as if they had just sprouted, yet they formed a protective circle around him with an exuberant vitality.
Not only Tao Yiran, but all the soldiers present were stunned, wondering what was happening.
Faint green light emanated from the vehicle. Everyone turned to see a woman in a blue qipao stepping out gracefully, her figure slender and elegant.
Jiang Wenyu was gathering a massive green orb of light in her hands. The overwhelming energy made Tanaka feel an ominous chill.
Damn it, this Ability User was beyond his capability to capture. His face turned ashen. "What are you all standing there for? Shoot!"
The soldiers finally reacted to the sound, aiming their guns at the two people inside the circle.
Gunfire echoed continuously, but the protective shield formed by the green light and willow branches remained unbreakable.
After a while, they failed to leave even a scratch on it.
"You..." Tao Yiran was at a loss for words. Was the person in front of him still the Jiang Wenyu he knew?
Outside, gunshots rang out, while inside, Jiang Wenyu elegantly walked towards Tao Yiran in her qipao.
Her smile was extremely unsettling, more so than at any other time.
She gently raised her hand to retract the branches, and Tao Yiran slowly descended to the ground, his eyes filled with shock.
He had never believed in monsters or demons, but who could explain this scene to him now?
"Are you a demon...?" Tao Yiran's dark eyes lost focus as he blinked, wanting to clarify with Jiang Wenyu.
A beam of green light shot from her fingertip and struck his forehead. He widened his eyes and reluctantly closed them.
In that fleeting moment before he fell unconscious, he saw a woman in a qipao walking towards him, backlit by a radiant glow.
