As Jiang Wenyu stepped out of the review hall, the sky was overcast, and everything appeared shrouded in mist. 0

She stood outside in a dark green qipao, her graceful figure perfectly accentuated by the fitted dress, drawing the attention of every passing staff member. 0

“Miss Jiang, here is your Citizen ID Card. Please keep it safe. Someone will come to provide you with modern education and help you adapt to society,” an officer said as he handed Jiang Wenyu an identification card. 0

Jiang Wenyu raised her hand to accept it, smiling softly. “Thank you.” 0

The officer remained in place, watching as Jiang Wenyu walked past him toward the entrance. 0

At the same time, a man approached from the direction of the guardhouse. 0

He was tall and well-dressed, striding directly up to Jiang Wenyu with a smile. “Jiang Wenyu, it’s good to see you again.” 0

Lao Zhang had just exited the review hall when he witnessed this scene. 0

He recalled that the guide assigned by the higher-ups was not this young man who appeared to be in his twenties. Squinting his eyes, he quickly stepped forward to interrupt their conversation and addressed Yan Qing. “I remember you’re not from around here. Who are you?” 0

Most individuals allowed through the doors of the review hall were employees or Ability Users, or members of Psychic Ability teams on covert missions who couldn’t reveal their identities. 0

Lao Zhang had never seen Yan Qing before; he scrutinized him from head to toe. Yan Qing responded with a polite smile and a nod, pulling out a black ID card from a pocket and waving it in front of him. 0

It was clear that Yan Qing belonged to a Psychic Ability team on a mission; this black ID card was unique to the Global Ability Research Institute and could not be easily replicated by others. 0

Lao Zhang’s expression shifted immediately, adopting a conciliatory demeanor. He gestured for Yan Qing to enter. “Ah, I’m so sorry for not recognizing you earlier. Please, come in! Since you're here in N City on a mission, we will fully cooperate with you.” 0

N City was where Yan Qing had recently resolved a case, and it was also where he had met Jiang Wenyu. 0

According to the usual rules, individuals who have never killed anyone can be issued a Citizen ID Card after being assessed by relevant personnel. They are then assisted by guides to help them integrate into human society and learn the laws and survival rules that Ability Users need to know. 0

However, based on what Jiang Wenyu disclosed, despite her past of having killed someone, she was ultimately released after a longer detention period than usual due to her position and the backing of a certain high-ranking official. They chose to help her integrate into modern society. 0

Yan Qing remained still, smiling as he looked at Jiang Wenyu. “Miss Jiang, would you like to join our research institute in Zone Z?” 0

Jiang Wenyu was taken aback. She lightly furrowed her brows before relaxing them again. After locking eyes with Yan Qing for three seconds, she chuckled and replied, “Sure.” 0

Lao Zhang glanced around and quickly understood Yan Qing's intentions. This guy wasn’t here to carry out a mission; he was here to recruit people. 0

In just three minutes, Lao Zhang changed his appearance for the third time. “Hey, don’t you have any sense of public duty doing this?” 0

Yan Qing raised an eyebrow and flashed a smug smile at Lao Zhang. 0

The number of Ability Users in each city can indicate a portion of the hidden strength that exists there, representing an aspect that should not be underestimated. 0

Generally speaking, Ability Users discovered in a city are unlikely to leave easily unless... 0

“I got it! I got it!” 0

Jiang Ming suddenly emerged from an unknown corner, holding up his phone and loudly announcing to Yan Qing, “Look, the approval has come through!” 0

“Ding~” 0

Lao Zhang's phone chimed. 0

Lao Zhang glanced at his phone and saw a message from the Director of the Review Office, indicating that they no longer needed to worry about Jiang Wenyu's situation. Zone Z had sent two people to pick her up. 0

Yan Qing said lightly, "Can we take her now?" He gestured towards Jiang Wenyu, who was standing nearby. 0

Lao Zhang nodded helplessly. "Alright, alright, you can take her from Zone Z." 0

Jiang Wenyu was filled with curiosity about the world around her. This era was so different from the one she remembered; decades of lost memories had transformed the world into something unrecognizable. 0

Sitting in the back seat of the car, Jiang Wenyu watched the scenery rush by. She glanced at Yan Qing and Jiang Ming in the front seat before turning to look out the window. Casually, she asked, "So, what do you need me to do?" 0

Yan Qing caught a glimpse of Jiang Wenyu's beautiful profile through the rearview mirror and replied softly, "We do need you for something, but don’t worry; it’s not anything bad. We just need you to participate in an exam with us." 0

"An exam?" Jiang Wenyu turned around, surprised. "You want a hundred-year-old woman like me to take an exam with you?" 0

"Um… it’s not what you think. There are no restrictions for Ability Users. You fit the criteria for registration, and since we’re short on people, we thought of you," Yan Qing explained. 0

Jiang Wenyu frowned. "Why me? I remember we’ve only met once. How can you trust me so easily? Aren't you afraid I’ll mess up your exam?" 0

Jiang Ming drove while occasionally glancing sideways to listen in on their conversation. 0

Yan Qing rummaged through the briefcase beside him and pulled out an old, yellowed photograph, which he handed back to Jiang Wenyu. 0

She took the photo and turned it over, staring at the face on the front for a long time without speaking. 0

After a moment, she finally came back to herself and looked up to ask, "Is it him?" 0

Yan Qing remained silent, merely nodding. 0

Jiang Wenyu asked again, "Is he dead?" 0

This time, Yan Qing did not nod, but Jiang Wenyu seemed to understand the answer. 0

The atmosphere grew heavy for a moment. Jiang Wenyu fell silent, her fingers tracing the face of Tao Yiran, the central figure in the photograph. Her eyes reddened, and tears fell uncontrollably onto the picture, blurring her vision. 0

There were over a dozen people of various sizes in the photo, but she recognized only one: Tao Yiran, sitting in the middle, playfully holding a woman’s hand as they both smiled at the camera. 0

In the picture, he appeared to be over fifty, with some gray in his hair, yet he still looked vibrant and scholarly behind his glasses, resembling a teacher. 0

He looked exactly as she had imagined. 0

If they had been together back then, would she have watched him grow old like this? 0

Thank goodness they hadn’t ended up together. Thank goodness… 0

“Um, Miss Jiang, are you okay?” Yan Qing asked upon hearing Jiang Wenyu's muffled sobs. He handed her a pack of tissues. 0

Jiang Wenyu covered her face with one hand while accepting the tissues with the other. 0

As she released her pent-up emotions, she pulled out tissue after tissue to wipe away her tears and the tremors of her mouth and nose. It was difficult to see herself like this in such an emotional state. She felt sad for a long time; it took her about ten minutes to regain her composure. 0
